Post by: DCHD14 on December 07, 2016, 02:12:41 pm
I am asking to see what the oldest dogs you guys run are, in general... I got a good dog that's 7 and as of this past year he still rolls out pretty good, this year will tell if he can still hang. What's the oldest yall run?

i've seen dogs and horses and mules pretty well wore out at 7-8 years old , others make it alot longer . i guess its genetics and how much they abuse they take working .

i can't get a good dog to live past 5-6 . i've had'em get killed by every strange thing but an asteroid lol

I have a gyp that is 12 and still going. It takes her a few days to recover after a hard hunt but hasn't ever really slowed up yet and she has been hunted 3-5 times a week just about her whole life. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161207/70c38bec315181803a752e5802f480f9.jpg). She was 10 in this pic that is the best one I have of her.

Most should still be going strong at 7.

Got a 9-10 year old gyp bird/cur gyp that's still good to go as much as you'll take her and that gyp has seen ALOT! Used to have a dog named dozer, he was 11 and if you'd take him he would go till the cows came home

I had a 10 year old gyp that could go all day and acted like a puppy. But, most dogs that are hunted hard all their lives, you can really see them slow down around 7 or 8 years old.

When yella died he was slap wore out but would hunt hard for few hrs and if he got on one he would give it hell but it would take a flat week to recover. He was over ten easy got killed in the drive way after all those yrs and hogs

If I hunted this dog hard last year for 2-3 Times a week and that's putt on 20+ miles a hunt on him he would take about a week to get over it. You can tell he is slow I g down and I more than likely won't hunt him near as much this year but he will also more than likely be in the box every time I hunt though haha. I got him a few years ago but I'm almost positive he got hunted 3-4 Times a week for most the year by the man that had him before. Most the time here he gets a good 5 days  recovery  unless I get a rainout or taking time off.

I got one that is 13-14 this year...don't really know.

But he a decent one. He slow as can be now. It's comical at times last year. He half crippled from a injury he sustained in a fight with a pitbull that got loose from a friends kennel and chewed up his pastern pretty good.

...but he still wanna hunt and I'm gonna take him dang it.

He still pull a rabbit out hat and I'm just hope'n the slower he get a good hog may catch him slippin and he go out the way he should...a warrior.

In my eyes it be the perfect end... I don't want him to die on no chain, and sure dint wanna have to put him down. I would if I had to, but I'd sure like to see him go out doing what he meant to do. So as long as he barking and running chain when I leave in morn, bet ur bottom dollar he be Sitn behind me on the wheeler that day.

like it already been said...you will know...

one of the hardest things for me has been to finally let go of those good dogs...especially when they were bred and born in our own back yards...the ones that gave us great pleasure to hunt and even to just look at...and we know that day is coming one day...

The best hog dog i ever owned died in the middle of a game trail 5 minutes after baying a big sow at the ripe old age of 13. I hunted him everytime i went until the night he died.

Reuben that's the sad truth. Lots of good times until then.
What about breeding ages? What's the oldest y'all have successfully bred, make and female

I hunted one until he was 12 or 13 at around 10 he slowed way down, but he still wanted to go so I took him, he never hardly got out of a trot towards the end, but he gave em hell. he found hogs until I finally had to retire him.
