For the new year I've had the itch. Been doing a lot of digging around already told myself yes. Gunna bring in some hound. How many are running hound crosses and what did you cross up?
It took awhile but I think I've got a decent enough gyp to bring a hound too. I'm still just undecided if I want to go plot, walker, trigg, or a fox hound.  Let me know what y'all got thinking. Open to ALL OPINIONS. thanks fellas! Y'all have a merry Christmas!

I am biased, for me and hogs Plott only.

I have one dog. 1/2 plott 1/2 BMC. He's my best strike dog. He's not as rough as I like and he opens on really hot sign. He's a really good dog and if there's a pig around he will do anything he can to line it out. I'm a cur guy but I won't pass an opportunity to try a mix with plott.

I should also add that I have always ran full curs. Out of the whole pack he's the only mix so I can only speak for him myself. I have hunted with a lot of dogs with friends and the only hound mixes I've liked has been plott.

I have seen both plott and walker crosses and both have been nice. I think more important than breed would just find one regardless of breed that impresses you and carries the qualities you are hoping to add by crossing to it. Good luck with your search.

I hunted hounds, cutter bay blueticks! Some of the best dogs I've hunted behind. But looking back, I personally don't want to hunt behind an open dog. Push's the hog way too much. I like catching hogs not running them. Anything with too much hound will be open on track, that's why my new pack is all curs.

 I have some pups right now I want to try and cat hunt but if they don't I will run em on hogs ....they a quarter bloodhound .....  we will see how they do ....

I've been around a lot of crosses for a long time & seen some jam up dogs out of them & a bunch that did not work out. First, I would look at your gyp & list all her good points & her weak points. If she is gritty you can gain a hole lot breeding her to a running dog but make sure that dog has a good nose. Most running dogs will put the stick & hunt in them but a lot of them do not have anymore nose then your average cur.
  If she is a close hunter make sure you breed her to a hound that goes hunting if that is what you like. You can always put the brakes on one but you cannot make a dog hunt if it is not in him.
  I have seen people breed two average gritty dogs together & the pups not have enough grit to stay bayed by theirselves.
  Speed is always a good thing & I would not breed to a slow hound altho some of the fastest dogs I have seen are cur x hound crosses.
  Even tho I am a Plott hound guy, there are a lot of breeds out there that have a lot to offer on a cross. If I did not bearhunt once in a while, I would have switched to a running dog cross x cur dog. If you make the right cross you can get the best of both worlds.

I found a nice hound, if the deal goes through gunna take her to. The male is dead silent red bone walker cross that spose to be real nice. P Wilson could put more input on him. They use him to run mountain lion with. Damn good lookin dog!
Either that or a nice nice plot is what I'm thinking. That deep hunting and gritty. Cause my cassi dog is more on the medium  huntin side but loose!

Slim, that Walker gyp is a one in a million

I had 3 pure bred hounds on my yard at one point that were all silent until bayed. Gave the male plott away to a kid who needed some help catching hogs, sold the other walker gyp to a buddy and kept the one i have. They are out there, just gotta know where to look.

Redtick coonhound and black mouth cur

Plotts work great for me! Hogs are few and far in the California hills here, you need a dog with an above average nose to strike a track, tons of bottom to to keep it going, and lots of grit to get them stopped and keep them there. I have a mountain cur that does exceptionally well but other than her, my best dogs for this county has been PLOTTS! I'm a hound hunter through and through (though I love my two curs). I'm thinking of breeding some Plott/cur crosses in the future.

i put a little b&t in mine. thay get a good nose and a couple inches. but i like a bigger dog

Double wipe out should be a good cross to any good line of curs...

Over they years most all the dogs I considered to be the best hog dogs I saw usually had walker, plott, redbone or blueticks crossed to them...but have seen many mt curs that had everything you could want in a hog dog...

Yah I've kinda wrapped my mind into the dog Preston uncle has or going to find me a nice plott.
Either way if I have to I'll take her to my goofy dog. Only thing there is he hasn't made my type dog yet. Still young but tight bred and really coming on finally. He's always a option aswell. I've got an eye on her for when she comes in, she's getting filled up some way or how. Thank y'all for input

That plott I gave away is supposed to be making a damn hand. Granted the boy ain't been around dogs long and doubt he's been able to see many good dogs but he's been striking and getting bayed over a mile. tons of grit to him. Knew he would make just wasn't sure about his bottom when I sent him on. If he turns out and I get to go see him. And my wipeout gyp works. You can bet yalls asses that will be a cross made. I love the way a hound hunts. Hate that mouth they tend to have lol

Damn bitch is pregnant with some mutt pups right now. Moms blue heeled terrier cross junky pet hung her while I was out of town for work a while back. Reckon she'll have them in next 2-3 weeks. Should be cool looking but doubt I'll keep any. Male is gamey, hunts rats in the taxidermy shop and will wad some cows up.
