Title: Would y'all hunt 300 acres?
Post by: Georgia-Hawgs on August 03, 2017, 01:26:33 pm
Got an offer to hunt 300 acres with a bunch of hogs. I quit hunting a while back but still have access to my old dogs. The thing is they ain't real gritty. They'll put teeth on a runner but at the same time I've seen them on some LONG races. On the other hand my buddy has some rcd's that'll put the vice on one in a heart beat. What would y'all do? Call in the alligators, or pass on the small property ........

Like Pwilson said, if you can get permission from all the neighbors then go for it. That's where tone training the dogs comes in handy in case they get out of pocket. It also depends on what's around the property if the hogs will, or can, leave it.

I appreciate the advice folks. The guy did say we can get off the property a "little bit" ......I'm gonna have to find out more details about what that "little bit" means. I kind of took it as one bordering land owner won't care, but another one will. My old dogs are tone trained. At least they were. I hope the guy that bought them kept using that with them, because I had just got them to where they were coming back real good when that tone went off. I surprised the heck out of some boys with it one day when the dogs were bee lining a track straight towards the road.

I hunt places as small as 40 acres, sitting on the box in the back the truck waiting to open the gates of the dog box....i get a real good pinpoint of time there coming in and wait....lol not really hunting just catching em for the land owner. Have to take the spots you can get around here.

If you have RCD's like you said there is your answer. Take a couple of them and run them with your best find dog, watch the garmin and if they get on a race they are not able to stop see if you can get out in front of them and turn them when needed. Thats hard on some properties but if you have fast RCD's there shouldn't be any real long races. Just some thoughts and ideas for you. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

If an ethical game warden was with you before you let the dogs down on a small place, would you still do it?    If your answere isn't a quick yes, then no.             To hunt small property responsibly, can you leave the fate of a big boar up to the boar?    Can you allow him to choose where he makes his stand if you want to ethically hunt small properties?     If any 1 dog in your yard can not take the controle of the boars fate away from the boar as soon as its found then I  wouldn't be hunting this dog on small properties.
