Title: Christmas ham
Post by: Slim9797 on December 24, 2018, 02:54:36 pm
Me Rhett and Dawson made our annual Christmas Eve hunt. First time we’ve all been together on a hunt since January I believe. Sketch is finally weaned off pups so we took her and 1.5 yr old Rocky. Cast them off Rhett’s deer feeder at day break. No dice, so we go into the ranch next door and free cast em. 450 they hit tracks and split. Meet at 800 and sit up bayed. We take our time and walk that way. Get half way there and can now hear it is a few hogs rallying they have bayed. These days I’ve killed enough hogs and bayed enough rallies I just like to watch the dogs and get my buddies involved, So i hand my rifle to Dawson and try to coach him best I can on the way in(he’s never shot one off a bay). Get to where we can see the hogs and boy if it wasn’t some of the prettiest baying I have seen, the hogs were holed up in a little sand gulley. 4 or 5 of em standing shoulder to shoulder single file, dogs circling the wagon just like a true bay dog should (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181224/269a0fb86238b98344a379a7d153f880.jpg)  https://vimeo.com/308118932 (https://vimeo.com/308118932)
I told Dawson to just pay attention to where the dogs were and shoot a hog. Well I guess he got nervous anxious and excited and went to shooting. Made 3 shots that all hit a hog but none were knockdown shots so the hogs went to running. They go about 200 yards and bay. Literally 10 more yards and they’d have been in the neighbors deer feeder pen and I’d have had to call them off. I grabbed the gun, crawled in there back em up and shot a sow. Dogs left out of there for deer hunter country and I reeled em back around and called it.  https://vimeo.com/308115801 (https://vimeo.com/308115801)
Hit one more spot, casted em a good ways on no sign, they come back and we headed to the taco stop. Had lots of fun, short, sweet hunt with my best friends. I have to give the little rocky dog credit. I knew early on he was gonna make something, since I started using him he always had the want to get into something, he’s been on a good 20-30 hogs this year and today he proved to me he’s getting it. Soon as he puts it all together he’s gonna be as good as he wants to be. And sketch 8 days off of puppies, well she did as she always does and just finds a way to get bayed and stay that way. Wasted no time reminding me why I bred her.

Went again this morning. Same 2 dogs. Rocky struck a group(his first strike so that was really cool) him and sketch bayed the group 80 yards across the property line. Tried to make a phone call to get right to retrieve and no answer so we listened to them a while and I toned them out. Productive hunt even though we didn’t get to put our hands on anything.

Sounds like a couple great hunts! I like a dog to go right back in to the game like they never missed beat.

I wasn’t mad at them. Always certain things I see every hunt that frustrate me, but I have been taught to put things in perspective. 2 year old dogs producing is stellar. Gives me a lot to look forward to when they’re hopefully 4 and 5 years old and really put it all together.
