Title: Huntin Trucks Post by: Okhogdogger on October 29, 2009, 07:40:43 am Would a Ford F250 Diesel be good to hunt with?
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: trent77969 on October 29, 2009, 07:50:50 am As long as you have good roads to drive on. The diesels are not very quite, and them starters are expensive from all the start'n and stoppin. I did the math and realized its cheaper to put front ends and starters in my toyota rather than the big diesels. Jus me 2 cents
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: t.wilbanks on October 29, 2009, 08:08:35 am Plus if you get off in the mud, diesels are alot heavier and more likely to get stuck
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on October 29, 2009, 08:45:28 am Stay away from mud or wet grass if you go with diesel, especially if it is a 2 wheel drive. It will sink like a rock and it'll take a dozer to get it out. I have a 99 superduty 4x4 with 35 swampers and thats just to keep from getting stuck in my yard.lol
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: W-tate on October 29, 2009, 08:47:54 am I can take my f250 4x4 diesel any where I wanna go
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: t.wilbanks on October 29, 2009, 08:49:07 am i had to pull a cummins diesel off of the side of the road the other day. it had been raining earlier and he pulled over to use his phone, and got stuck, but the little toyota didnt have any problems!
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: W-tate on October 29, 2009, 08:52:36 am Thats a dodge for ya great motor Just needs a body and trany under it
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on October 29, 2009, 08:54:54 am W-tate, come to Louisiana, I'll put you in some holes where we'll have to go get you in china. lol
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: t.wilbanks on October 29, 2009, 08:57:18 am exactly! plus it was 2wd and had street tires. I have a buddy that has a 05 dodge hemi with 35 mud grapplers, and if he gets in the ditch he has trouble coming back out, even after the toyota already showed him how its done. I think Toyotas are the best hunting trucks: light weight, quiet, great mpg, very reliable, awesome 4x4, they are just alittle more pricey.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on October 29, 2009, 08:59:58 am Don't take it the wrong way. I love my superduty, 4 inch lift with 35 swampers. I'm just letting you know that they aren't the best mud truck in the world. I had a 95 tacoma regular cab 4x4 on 33 swampers and it was pretty much unstoppable. Only way to get it stuck was to high center it.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: W-tate on October 29, 2009, 09:03:31 am There ain't enought room in a Toyota for me my dogs and a buddy but they are tuff littel boogers
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on October 29, 2009, 09:08:24 am Hey fellas, speaking of toyotas, does anyone have a good 22r engine? I have a 81 4x4 pickup I was trying to sell with bad engine, but didn't have any buyers. Thinking about redoing the motor and using it.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: t.wilbanks on October 29, 2009, 09:18:11 am there used to be a place in oklahoma that you could get a fully refurbished 22re for around 1200 if you take them your old one. i cant remember the places name, maybe you can google it!
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Eric on October 29, 2009, 09:23:40 am I hunt out of my 4 dr chevy. 1/2 ton z-71s have always been popular for hunting. Closest you can get to the small size of a toyota, with a V8, and fullsize cab. Toyota's aren't down with the big people like myself. :D
My z-71s will go around a plowed corn field or what ever when its wet. Usually if they can't make it... its too wet to hunt any ways. Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on October 29, 2009, 09:26:17 am Only bad thing about the Z71 is "it's a chevy" lol
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: lonewolf on October 29, 2009, 09:30:06 am Bottom line is a diesel is heavy in the front end! If yours is 2 wheel drive I'd say no, if it is a 4x4 I'd say be careful where you go!
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on October 29, 2009, 09:37:44 am My dad had a 2 wheel drive powerstoke and I seen it get stuck in the wet grass. I'm not even joking, front ends are very heavy. By the time we pulled it out it was buried to the rear axle.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: TColt on October 29, 2009, 10:37:50 am I have a dodge 3500 4x4 on 35's with a performance trany and that barely gets me through some pastures. Diesels are not made for huntin rigs, they are made to pull your huntin rig.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: trent77969 on October 29, 2009, 10:47:28 am On another side note, the ruts you make with a diesel (if you make it through) might upset the land-owner and as we all know none of us want that to happen.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: sfboarbuster on October 29, 2009, 01:34:03 pm Best huntin truck ive had was a diesel. 97 dodge 2500 single cab cummins with a 5 spd w/ 37's. Ive had two dodge diesels, a toyota, and a f150 and by far ive liked the dodge the most.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: raider54 on October 29, 2009, 05:27:46 pm I can take my f250 4x4 diesel any where I wanna go I cant take my F350 4X4 Powerstroke anywhere I wanna go. That truck would get stuck in the driveway Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Dexter on November 01, 2009, 10:30:25 am i can take my hunting rig any wheres I "need" to go.. i can haul 4 guys dry and 8-10 dogs or if its just 2 of us i have a box that goes in the back of the bronco that will haul 6 dogs,, and if i want can tow it behind to the pasture

Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Dexter on November 01, 2009, 01:00:54 pm its i a wooden box with a rubber mat under it ill take a picture later today its in it already
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on November 01, 2009, 01:56:17 pm Dexter, what year is the bronco? I have an 86 ranger 4x4 with the 2.9. first year of the fuel injected. It was my first truck, it's been sitting for about 14 years.
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Dexter on November 01, 2009, 02:43:34 pm mines a 84 carburetor style wich i love easy to work on i put a starter on it in the last three years besides regular service wich i just
change the oil and a grease job it never goes over th mileage on the service sticker Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: BLUE LACY on November 01, 2009, 08:47:40 pm thanks Dexter
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: NThoghunter on November 01, 2009, 09:52:46 pm Been hunting out of my F250 4x4 powerstroke for about 4 years now. Been stuck maybe only a couple times. Just use common sense and it will be fine. ;) Plus the crew cab is nice for a load of folks and sleeps good!
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: cowcountryhogdogger on November 01, 2009, 10:30:55 pm I hunt out of a 4 door 4X4 Dodge 3500 single wheel 1 ton and haven't had any problems with it. But as already stated, you have to use common sense when deciding where to drive and where not to drive. Knock on wood, haven't been stuck in it yet ;D
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Dexter on November 01, 2009, 11:00:19 pm but Ross if i get the lil truck stuck you can pull me out and i dont have to have a half acre to turn around,,and it didnt cost 30k ;D
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: cowcountryhogdogger on November 01, 2009, 11:05:23 pm That is 100% true Dexter. I'm still kickin myself for sellin that jeep I had last year. I try to be very sure about whether or not I can get through where I'm going before I head through the mud. If I do get stuck it won't be an easy task gettin it out. I don't want to even think about that ;D
Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: WAARHEID on November 01, 2009, 11:41:10 pm Drove a full size ram pickup when I worked for the Conservation Dept. It was a gasoline model, and it would get stuck in wet grass. Places that every other truck could handle no problems, that truck had to be put in 4wd just to have any hope of making it.
I'm not a huge fan of Jeeps or Bronco IIs. But Bronco I's? None better as real off-road utility goes. All that said, my next hunting rig will be a Toyota pickup, or a van with a lift and 4wd conversion. Title: Re: Huntin Trucks Post by: Beejay on November 02, 2009, 07:15:42 am Van with a conversion, that would be awesome. Go to the sky with it and put some 40s on it. May be scary on sharp turns though. Imagine it would be top heavy.
