Title: Not the best hunt....
Post by: jlingle on April 15, 2008, 01:09:40 pm
Went out last night to work the dogs on a place where they've been having hog problems.  About 10 minutes into the hunt, we came across a (^%^$(*& porcupine.  We had 8 dogs on the ground & really only had 3 get into the porcupine badly.  Three others took a very slight swipe at the porky, and 2 dogs didn't touch it at all.  The 2 rougher dogs of the bunch both had a pretty rough time of it, and they were both pretty sensitive about us making "patients" out of them.  To make a long story short, we dropped dogs at 10pm, we pulled quills until about midnight, and then went back to the house with our collective tails between our legs.  Man, I hate porcupines.  Here's a picture of my Dan dog with a painful look on his face:

I can't speak about where they are in Texas.  I live in Southwest Oklahoma, and porcupines are all over the place here.  If you don't have porcupines in your area & you run hogdogs, then you oughta hum a few bars of "Jesus Loves Me" because you're blessed.

It's hard to get upset at the dogs for hitting the things.  It's no wonder the dogs wanna put their mouths on em.  The whole time we were pulling quills last night, my hunting buddy and I were just shaking our heads because those dogs smelled like they'd just tangled with a boar hog.  They smell like a hog, they kinda look like a little hog, it's not hard to understand why most hogdogs will nail one everytime.

The dogs will be fine.  They'll be sore for a while, but they'll be alright.

I'm glad we don't have those in our neck of the woods.
