Title: Redbone Coonhounds for pigs good or bad?
Post by: Wicked1 on May 05, 2021, 12:04:27 pm
I'm curious what the experiences (good/bad) are of people who have hunted pigs behind Redbone Coonhounds in the past? I've hunted behind a Walker, a few Plott's, and plenty of curs of various breedings and crosses, but I've never had any experience with Redbones. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Just one. He was honest and consistent, but slow. Not rough, but made a hand when the CD got there by helping out and doing his part. Rigged off the roof as well.

Like I said, only tried one so not fair to judge them all by this.

Like any other breed it will depend on the "strain" of Redbone he is from, and his individual traits. There doesn't seem to be lots of Redbones around these days.

My brother started feeding one back around 1980...he had a tattoo in his ear with numbers but didn’t know who owned him...he named the dog bone on account he was nothing but bones when he first showed up...
We took him with us for a while...slow on track and fairly cold nosed...when he got on a track he more than likely would put a big boar at the end of it...several times it was him and an Airedale would catch on each ear...other times there were other dogs helping...

It’s almost not fair to say redbone for me because he was 50/50 redbone/American bulldog but I will say this I had him and one of my curs I bred and those were by far hands down the best dogs I ever owned and I was sadly still a teenager when I owned these and didn’t truly know what I had back then. My redbone barked the first hog he had ever saw and was silent from then on but that SOB caught harder then any bulldog I ever owned. I got called a liar many times for saying how he was bred until you got to hunt behind him. He looked 120% redbone but caught 120% bulldog.. he absolutely had the best of both worlds and I’ve wanted another one since I lost him but I’ve been to scared I’ll never duplicate him so I’ve never tried and never owned a redbone since him
