Title: Finished knife Post by: Cajun on July 19, 2021, 09:06:51 pm Again Tapatalk is not letting me reply in my other post. Here is the final product with a camel bone handle. Would be hard to make a living at this as I have about 10 hours of labor in this knife. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210720/e4cf72551a00bcebf9ff45edcc96ab01.jpg)

Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: HIGHWATER KENNELS on July 20, 2021, 05:04:06 am Fine piece of equipment rite there. You’ll be able to hand that down for generations to come.

Just the hand sanding is so time consuming, I really like this 5160 steel and just tempering the edge where it leaves the Hamon. I could have polished the dark look off but I kind of like that darker color after it is dipped in the acid.
Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: Cajun on July 20, 2021, 06:41:13 am Forgot to add that Mike is a great teacher and really stands over my shoulder watching and explaining everything. The forging comes pretty easy for me having carried a forge in my truck for 40 years but the rest of it is a new learning curve for me. They always said you cannot teach a old dog new tricks. I think that was started by a old lazy dog. lol
Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: Muddy-N-Bloody on July 20, 2021, 12:03:06 pm That’s really sweet Cajun
I love a custom knife - I have a pretty good collection- I would never to sell a one if I made em on account of what I think there worth versus what someone would actually pay for one lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: Cajun on July 21, 2021, 12:22:19 pm Ha Muddy. I know what you mean. To Mike the Knife it is no big deal to just start another knife. The first few I started and he told me to trash them just about broke my heart. I finally made three that I totally finished. This is the fourth. I would really be behind the eight ball if he was not there and I was learning strictly on my own. Puts me way ahead watching him and having him explain things. Put up some pics. of your knives. I would really like to see them.

I have a couple I bought from a knife maker in Wisc. that look similar to your 2nd and 3rd knife. Make no mistake tho, any knife I make, I make it to use.
Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: WayOutWest on July 26, 2021, 09:39:56 pm When someone tells me the knife they got from me is going on the wall never to be used, I make a mental note not to make them another. Lol

Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: Cajun on August 10, 2021, 08:14:13 pm Goose, I have been fooling around with it for a few years but just did not have the time. Only finishiing 4 knives in that amount of time shows my interests were elsewhere but I am going to semi retire in Oct. and that will free up a lot of time. Made some sheaths for them and that was a learning experience. I'll post some pics. later.
Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: Cajun on October 02, 2021, 11:07:09 am Finally got around to making sheaths for these knives. The first darker sheath was the first one I attempted and I did mess up on the stitching. The 2nd sheath is the lighter colored one and it didn’t fit the curved skinning knife. It’s so pretty tho that now I’ll have to make a knife to fit it. 3rd sheath fit like a charm. You can sure learn about anything watching YouTube videos. lol(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211002/173e9ef0043c6adf97d2b88863180173.jpg)

Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: l.h.cracker on December 06, 2021, 05:30:57 am Cajun your knives are turning out really nice I like the inward curve on your Skinner , Sheaths look really nice too.
My father in law recently gave me this knife it was His Daddy's He told me a friend of his Daddy's He Hunted with in East Tennessee made it for Him a long time ago the quality of the steel is really good and it holds an edge very nicely.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211206/00428f06b94568c4bcae1c80034c71a5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211206/9e29e7ca79396170e4b9faa3225ab12f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211206/b89fe52dc4598b4332598924db5fe50a.jpg) Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: Cajun on December 06, 2021, 09:14:15 am Cracker, that is a fine looking knife and just looking at it I would think a very skilled blade smith made it.
This past Saturday my 3 Grandsons and my son Travis came over and wanted to grind out a couple of knives. It’s hard when you have three different people grinding because everyone grinds different. While they were here I used there youth as strikers while I modified a ballpien hammer into a brute de forge hammer to make forged in finger guards. All in all it was a very enjoyable day. Mike it's nice to see you working with the youngsters. Getting some work in on that OBM grinder. I am planning on building my next 2x72 since I want a tilting one. I have a nice Northridge Tool Grinder now but it doesn't tilt. Brian Housewert sells the components to put together a good one.
Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: Cajun on December 06, 2021, 04:10:43 pm WOW, I just bought out a knifemaker. He got into this about 6 months ago and all equipment is 6 months or newer. He really gave me a heck of a deal. The only thing he didnt have was a anvil and I had one of those. He started a Hot Shot business and just did not have time for it anymore.Funny thing is I had just ordered a Ameribrade grinder and they had a 30 day backorder. After 3 weeks I found out about this deal and was able to cancel my order. I have not even started on the tilt option.
The boys are all about making some sticking knives now before Jan. rolls around. lol Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: WayOutWest on December 06, 2021, 09:35:02 pm Ameribrade is well thought of, some folks say OBM design was stolen from them. There are really no patents. I bought the small wheel kit from OBM, sure handy for doing the tight corners and finger grooves. Good luck to those boys.
Title: Re: Finished knife Post by: l.h.cracker on December 07, 2021, 05:28:26 am That's a great day right there Cajun even better that they're makin stickin knives to go hunt with you.I'd pay for my 3 oldest kids to spend a day like that with me but you can't see nothing but the bottoms of there feet for how far up their boyfriends and girlfriends rearends they are lol.
