Title: Shamrock Plotts
Post by: Reuben on July 28, 2021, 07:42:46 pm
Anyone hunt Shamrock plotts on hogs?
How do they cast?
Tracking ability?
What type of grit?

Thanks for any information…

I have hunted with Shamrock Plotts off and on for 35 years or better. They are a very good line of Plotts and over the years when I need a outcross I usually breed to one of Joe's dogs. I lost a very good young prospect last year that was just putting it all together to a alligator. I got him from Joe. Joe Hudson is the founder of the line. If you go back far enough they are mostly line bred off the Weems Butch x Weems Jill cross with Weems Doc in the mix.  They also had a shot of Cascade Timber in the mix. Just a guess but I would say about 3/4 Weems bred with the rest being Timber and a lil other stuff. A good blend of Nose, Speed and grit. Like any other line there are culls but a high percentage turn out.

Thank you Mike…seems like butch and Jill were in many plotts…the cascades I knew had some grit to them…I had heard the shamrocks have some grit to them and over the years cut back enough on grit to help in keeping them alive…

Sorry to hear that about your pup…I’ve lost a few to gators and try to stay away from gator infested areas…back when I was a kid we had very few gators…if there were any around they were afraid of humans…we swam in the rivers, rice field canals and reservoirs and never gave a second thought about gators…it’s been years now and no one swims those waters anymore…there have been a few caught over 14’ back home in the same places we used to swim…

Reuben,

It seems like the gator population is going up everywhere, and they’re becoming a very dangerous problem. We have had several gator incidents with dogs as well and here in SC DNR is very strict about killing gators. You have to apply for tags in a lottery and can only kill them certain ways. Down around Santee and down at the border near Savannah river they are everywhere and they dang sure aren’t scared of us.
