I saw a Catahoula with a coat like a boarder collie...only pup in the litter to turn out that way....Sire/Dam NALC. She came from lines that were "known" to throw a long haired dog from time to time. She was a heck of a competition bay pen dog.

7  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Cast Hunting on: October 15, 2015, 08:27:55 pm
I wasn't just picking or poking or trying to catch Oconee in some kind of bind...honestly....I'm intrigued by this subject.

I don't think I have the amount of land it would take to warrant cast hunting...not IMO anyway. Now...certain areas on my place I MAY turn the dogs out then pick them up and move just a little ways before I drop them and start walking or roading them...I guess that's kinda casting.

If I were to strictly cast on crossing points and known bedding areas or honey holes on my spots...knowing my dogs, it would go something like this:

Drop the dogs....sit and wait...when one or two have gone out 200-300 yards and returned (because that's about as far as they would go unless they hit a track) pick them up and move and do it again.

Would that be considered casting?

Oconee...mainly what I was asking was, well I don't know, a time frame of sorts I guess. When dropped on a crossing point or track, Most dogs worth feeding are gonna throw their nose down and start working. Some just work a track longer than others you know.

So...I guess what I'm asking is....when you cast, are you trying to cast on a hot enough track that you think your dogs will get on the hog quick or do you just let them work the track until they decide to give it up?

I know some trophy hunters down south of me that strictly cast on big tracks...trophy hunters. They'll pass up red hot tracks of a smaller size or group of pigs but turn out on just about any big track...hot OR cold.

Oconee....When you cast, what do you expect out of your dogs? What kind of area are you wanting covered? Or just strictly check the track you drop them on to see if it's in the right time frame to hold their attention?
10  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Walk hunting on: October 15, 2015, 04:33:55 pm
Oconee...honest to god question here, not poking. You've got huge tracts of land to hunt so you rig or cast mostly, walk into honey holes just to check them out, makes sense...my kinda hunting. But you train your dogs to stay close while walking, and they don't make big loops? Now, "close" is relative...close to me is 200-300 yards. That being said...once they hit a track, they take it to the source right? I mean...I don't see how you could keep them close walking but still expect them to cast properly. Honestly man...not poking at you...just confused.

My main spot affords me the oppurtunity to walk, rigg or road. Honestly, I like all 3 styles equally as much...or I use to before I hurt my back. I don't know if I'll ever be able to walk hunt like I use to.

My favorite two hunts to date were a walk hunt and a roading hunt, both solo.

The roading hunt I took every dog I had that was of age, lol (5 dogs total). I was more or less just goofing around. I had my hound on the ground by himself most of the time. At my favorite bedding area I turned out my Cur gyp and her daughter with him. They struck a group and as was more often the case than not in this particular area the pigs slipped out the back door. I caught up my cur gyp and her daughter next time I saw them because my cur gyp would get catchy at times and I didn't want her getting to far off. Anyhow, long story short...Preacher trailed them down and isolated a small sow. At 200 yards I dumped the box just for the hell of it and they caught her in a pond. This hunt was just plain fun...and I didn't have to sweat till the end, lol. This is why I love road hunting/rigging.

The walk hunt was with a Cur strike dog, Ol Jasper and a lead in CD. I wasn't in any hurry, just a leasurely walk by the river. It was a BEAUTIFUL May morning. I walked for 2-3 hours just enjoying every minute of the beauty God had put me in. It started to warm up and right about the time I was ready to climb out of the bottoms my Cur struck. It was an easy little boar and my Cur had no problem holding bay...I sat and watched for a few minutes but my young bulldog was getting antsy so I let him finish it off. The possibility of hunts like that are exactly why I love walk hunting.

I've had more exciting hunts with buddies and we've caught MUCH larger hogs but I don't know that ANY hunt will top either one of those.

I've got many stories on this forum, of caught hogs AND hogs that got away. I've bragged on dogs, questioned and cussed them....BUT...make no mistake, these stories aren't fantasies....I keep it real, lol

Georgia...sounds like my Bluetick, lol. If he don't get on a hog in the first 30-45 minutes you better put him up till another dog strikes, lol

17  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Rough dogs video on: October 01, 2015, 05:52:26 pm
wow...lol...no budge whatsoever.

Yes...every hunt with those dogs ends exactly like that one, Peel never catches any hogs...none inside 100 yards...none over 3 miles away...none over 5 miles away. And he's GOT to lose a lot of dogs right? How many dogs you have get killed by a hog the last 5 years Peel?
18  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: By request on: October 01, 2015, 05:01:40 pm
I've seen a dog that would cold trail...I mean get gone on the first track he came across. End up bayed up 3-4 miles away while we were catching hogs for the next couple hours that were within a mile of the truck. That same dog one hunt (this was before Garmin) dissapeared and was gone the rest on the night. My mentor had a radio telemetry system...that's the only dog that got a collar, anyhow...end of the night we couldn't pick him up. We all had to work the next morning so we left. Next day after work my mentor goes driving the roads with the antenna hangin out the window. 12 miles from the spot we turned out he finds his dog under a bridge laying down, barking every so often at a big ol sow. Was it the same track he started? Who knows. Was he a hog dog...oh yeah...IMO he was. Would I have him on my yard, hell no. I have no need for a dog like that.

Are Peels rough curs hog dogs? IMO...yeah, they are. Would I have one on my yard, no. But I may cross to one
19  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Rough dogs video on: October 01, 2015, 03:54:55 pm
I'll handle it Peel....the "know it all" needs more details I see, lol.

Oconee...as I mentioned before...Peels style of dogs/hunting is not the style I prefer, but I love to hunt...period....and ME PERSONALLY, I don't have a problem hunting with other folks who hunt different than I do.

Now this wasn't our first hunt together, we'd caught hogs together before...but on this particular hunt, along WITH Preacher, Id also brought a couple pups of 9-10 months of age. I'd asked Peel to alter his style a bit because I didn't want a situation to arise where the dogs WHERE caught a couple miles away and have one of my young pups get wrecked and me not be close by. He abliged and the rough curs stayed on lead more often than not. Honestly...that hog probably would have been caught, and a whole lot sooner if those dogs were running loose. Now that's....the rest of the story
20  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Rough dogs video on: October 01, 2015, 11:25:24 am
Oconee your such a damn blow hard, lol. You ain't got a clue about anyone's dogs but your own till you hunt with them. Form all the "opinions" you want but that's all they are and from a close minded individual like yourself, they don't mean crap.

Flash and Preacher were on that hog when he finally stopped, the other dogs were split up by this point...two rough curs with the young bucks 1/4 mile in front of the old farts (Peel and I) who had the bulldog as back up.

Now...this is just MY "opinion", Peel may see it different. We were in contact with the boys somewhat on the cellphones but when it came time to make the important decisions there was a lapse in communication. The curs were turned out about 400 yards from the bay...they were fighting that boar over the next few minutes and had him CAUGHT...(as they had MANY big, rank hogs) but that SOB was a fine specimen...as the boys approached he shook loose the last cur. The anchor cur was layed out and had nothing left, he was cut up a bit but more than anything just spent. We called in/corralled the lead dogs and called it at that point. We the handlers made the mistakes that day that cost the dogs their trophy because we split up the pack. That's my "opinion".
