Hit a spot that we haven't hunted in a while. Peewee was ranging round 209 yards when he opened on track. Dogs hit a nice size sounder the pigs busted up was running every where and the dogs singled out this nice sow. Bayed her up in a 5 to 6 foot hole drop off. We crawled up the rocks and sent our mountain goat Chico to them..caught hog! ....fishing her back out the hole was a pain in the rear for sure.

It was a diamond back, it bit him at the base of his tail near his anus, he sat on it in his house. It did so much damage to the skin and tissue, the first day was horrible my pit seized and his heart raced for several hours, It was nothing like a copperhead bite, pretty scary deal.

We have rattle snakes coming into our dog pens from all the rain. One of our best cd almost died from a bite, the snake was in his dog house. Chico lost his tail but not his life we was lucky, jus fighting the how quick he went down hill , he lost 30 pounds being so sick from the bite.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Need advice, long range loose dog
|

I bought a Bluetick/cat cross, this dog is always busy hunting I have no complaints there. It jus seams he has a lot more cold nosed then my other dogs, picks up a trail and has the stamina to track it down. He goes for miles till he starts running the pig or gets it bayed. I problem I'm having is he is hunting off my property running pigs cause he is so loose and i cant get to the bays and this dog is wide open on track, which his bark is a low scruffy bark that's not bad but it never changes so u never know when he is bayed unless the gps says he is treed. So I have been running him for three months now and I noticed my dogs have fallen off honoring him. So here my question , do I just hunt him alone, how can I teach him to get rough to stop one if he won't bite at one. The dog is not a cull, he jus hunts different than we are used to. Any advice is appreciated

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Nice sow / brought the old man out of retirement

It's been a few since I posted a hunt , not because we are not in the woods every other day. It's the fact that my pack has had a major turn over, and being able to stop a pig has become my problem now. I have gone from medium range rough dogs that shut down pigs in 900 yards... To long range loose dogs that strike multiple pigs and run them for miles till the pig stops running. Needless to say I'm not a great fan of this so far but I have been patient trying to figure it out. Never thought jus a few dogs made such a big difference in a pack in how they hunt till now. I discovered that out of all my dogs only three dogs was rough enough to stop the pig. Which is now my problem... Three months ago I retire a dog, he is a special dog to me not ur superstar hunter jus a consistent dog. I have hunted him for 4 1/2 years he is a rough sob but will get back to bay on a larger hog. He is always getting cut up and I jus thought it was him trying to catch , but now I'm thinking he was jus stopping and holding the pigs . The years have not been kind to Creesus and the last few hunts he was on he stroked out from heat exhaustion (it happen three times now) because he won't quit till the catch dogs get there. So the last time we carried him out of the woods I told myself this was his last hunt and retired him. Tank and Yella took up the slack, Yella came in heat so i bred her to my plott x so she is out not able to hunt, but recently my Tank bayed up a rank boar on the river 400 yards out in a creek we got 67 yards from the bay cut my pup cd Hum-v and Chico loose to them . I honestly think my pup feel off the high embankment on to the pig busted the bay. In the process my Tank got wrecked ( gut cut) and his neck was opened up. Took us a bit to pack him out of there after finding the catch dogs. It's been three weeks and Tank has heeled and alive but herniated so I don't know what my plans for him will be jus yet. So now this is where my problem begins We been Chasen pigs for months! And I'm so frustrated because out of my five strike dogs not one of them is putting teeth to stop the pig, instead they have become long range loose dogs. I'm talking miles! Till the pig stops running then they tree up barking. On more than one occasion multiple bays ( up to three at a time) miles apart from each other. So now getting to them has became a problem to drop the catch dogs. We have never experienced long range dogs but getting a crash course in it now. Out I'd frustration I brought Creeksus back out of retirement ! He is normally shaved when I hunt him but the rain kept me from it yesterday! Once again my dogs got on a sounder each dog picking a pig , running multiple directions. I had three bays going and miles between them. So I picked the closest dog which was creeksus and Clyde. They shut down this nice sow round 230 in a cave. Out of the six bays today we only got one pig and that was where my rough dog was. I got a crew of rough cur pups coming up but at 6 months I'm not ready to take that chance at loosing a pup till I understand how these long range dogs are gonna be. Any advice is very appreciated.

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Little pig, but wow on how the dogs hunted

One of my close friends got a new job and decided to sell out, it was good for us cause he cut me a hell of a deal..... I have hunted behind this dog before knew he has some problems but I was willing to take him in. Peewee is two old not been hunted a lot but is a cold nose dog (cat/blue tick).. He is open on track not something I was looking for but he is not to load with his low tone old man rough voice lol. Picking him up this gives us a total of five long range dogs, so for kicks we loaded up to try this combo out. Driving down the highway (281) the dogs open up going crazy sure enough a group of pigs where moving cross the road, almost makes u want to dump them but I don't hunt places that are not mine and no permission so we continued on to our spot. We was already pumped and knew it was gonna be a good night. Pulled in dropped Tank, Spot, Clyde, Sam and Peewee. The dogs are hunting hard ranging good when Peewee open up on track, a split second later u here tank, Sam, spot and Clyde baying up. Problem is there are three different bays going on at the same time... We listen , u can here pigs grunting babies squealing.. On the gps Sam Clyde and spot are together so we choose to go to that bay first. They are 600 yards out , get the catch dogs ready head in when the dogs pulled off came by us running... We knew then it was small and dead for them to leave and run another track. So we get gathered up and head towards the dogs, and they are moving out This is where this story gets interesting, we didn't make it to the other two spots where we had bays cause now all the dogs are tuning the same track out.. So I'm pretty sure the dogs killed more than this little pig I took a pic of. At .7 miles I had two dogs peel off Tank my BMC and Clyde my young walker hound we pick them up and continue on... Peewee is leading the pack and Spot is one tenth behind him .. Sam my Plott is starting to fall off at 2.8 miles out. By now our dogs are off our land and crossing god knows who's land. We have to get on the highway and start paralleling them headed the same direction. Along the way we pick up Sam and still chasing spot and peewee. We finally get within 900 yards of them and it shows they are treed. This really sucked cause now I have two dogs that struck on my place and now treed on another place. Right now I could care less bout the pig and jus worried bout retrieving my dogs safely. Chance heads toward them with one catch dog, I can here him calling to them to call off.. I'm at the truck with everyone else. He got within 125 yards to them dogs still bayed and he said it was sold briers u couldnt move though tied up Chico and continue to call them off our little spot dog came to him then after a few Peewee. And he walked them out off that place letting the pig go... Course I was disappointed that they worked so hard on that pig but understood we was on someone else's place.. Did learn a valuable lessons unless u want to hunt all night long don't run five long range dogs all at once lol...

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Troubles with training

I haven't talked much bout my pups till yesterday I didn't really know if any of them was gonna make it as hunting dogs. This group of pups are so different from my last group the weird thing they are all out of the same mom and dad. So here is my story I bred my old Yella dog and my straight catch cur Diesel , I was so excited cause it had been 1 1/2 years since my old dog had cycled and I was starting to think she was done having puppies. So right off the bat I knew I wasn't selling any out of this litter and prayed she would throw me a nice female to replace my old one. Pups hit the ground on September 28,2015 she had eight but lost one before I got home to help. Four females and three males grew into some fine looking pups. 2months Jus as soon as they could walk and follow me it was to the pig pen to feed, everyday. By this time I had only one female that was barking at the pig. All other pups would smell but not bark. At four months they was working the pig like a cow dog but still no bark. By now I'm worried cause my other litter was total opposite. I'm very confused as to why these pups will not bark even when I put an older dog with them. I keep working with the pups and started mock hunting. Pups find the pig but still no bark. By now I'm thinking that I might have to cull some dogs and very frustrated. So yesterday I decided to take to pups with me hunting, they are only five months old. Really young for what I'm asking but I was not getting anything else from them at home. Jus as soon as they hit the ground they was off keeping up with my older dogs ranging 100 to 300 jus searching. Tank, Spot and Clyde catch wind and move out, pups are right there keeping up. I hear tank bark then spot and Clyde and there running.. Pups stopped at 300 yards My older ones ran it 780 yards but did not get it stopped. So we wait for them to return gather up and start again. At this point I'm pretty please they are ranging and finding tracks trails and poop from pigs lol. Tank, spot , Clyde and my pups Groot and Creep wind again and run out around four hundred yards and then I heard it , my pups opened up with my older dogs and we had a bay going on . We head in can hear them working hard holding. We can see its multiple pigs 2 bigger sows and 2 smaller pigs. At this point my catch dog got to excited opened up and the pigs turned toward us and busted. The prettiest sight I have ever seen was those pups barking running them pigs lol.... And to think I was really thinking bout culling some dogs ....... We caught only one pig but it was a hunt I won't forget them two pups proved themselves and earned a pen on my yard. Now it's time to see how the girls do.

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Quick hunt

It warmed up enough for us to finally get the dogs out yesterday. Loaded up Tank, Yella,Clyde ,Sam and Spot and our two catch dogs and headed out. Jus as soon as we dropped the dogs they was getting piggy running some heavy traveled trails, but the dogs returned and we slowly moved along. A few hundred yards from the truck we discovered lots of pig tracks and the dogs took down a trail. Clyde our walker hound let out a chop that was not his normal baul , Tank and Spot returned to us so chance went to see what was us up, when he got there Yella our older dog was burried in a hole digging out a dillo. Chance was pulling her out and mad when Spot's head came up catching wind and she rolled out. The other dogs took a minute to catch wind but was starting to range out when Spot opened up. At 705 yards all the dogs had a strong bay holding. At 65 yards we cut loose Hum-V and Chico catching this nice little boar
