1  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Looks don't matter? I beg to differ.... on: November 15, 2013, 06:28:01 am
I just picked up my first catahoula a couple weeks ago. When I went to see the breeder I wanted a leopard female with glass eyes and a long tail, just based off desire. Well when I got there the guy I ended up picking was leopard but with brown eyes and a bob tail. I wasn't disappointed but he isn't what I had in mind. He picked me so he is who came home. Now that might be a silly way to pick a dog but that is how I picked up my last three dogs (family pets not working dogs) and it has worked out. My wife's last three dogs she picked based on how cute they are and they are all three useless non-listening pains in my hinny. It's about a bond with me and nothing about looks. If the looks are there also I'm thrilled but that is no where in my criteria. When I picked up my catahouligan Kris asked me what I was looking for in my pup and none of my answers where helpful because I didn't have any real preconceived notions. I can tell you that my heart was really hoping a solid colored male didn't pick me Smiley

Nice looking job. Did you do it yourself?

Looks like your hunting partner is gonna grow up to be Hell on Heels

It is always rough on a dog to change their diet. Feed less or feed a food that is made by the same producer with similar ingredients to help make it easier.

I've been wanting to smoke a bologna I guess it's about time to fire up the pit.

Great looking pup. Sounds like he has a bright future of chasing swine.
7  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: 270 or 243?? on: November 08, 2013, 10:20:45 pm
I love my 270. I have shot quite a bit with it. Mine prefers to use the 150grain and can take down anything in North America. Unfortunately I don't get to hunt as much as I like but I know I would rather have a gun that will kill what I'm shooting at and feel good knowing that it has stopping power further than I can shoot accurately. It does have a bit of kick and can make you sore after an afternoon of shooting but that isn't often.

I would sand it with some very fine grit, you don't want scratches just enough to make a good bonding surface. Then wipe it down with some acetone or a similar product to get it as clean as possible. Once it is clean and prepped just spray it down nice and even. I wouldn't necessarily try and get it all down in one thick coat but rather make it a couple of coats. Remember you can spray more on but you can't take it off if it looks all sloppy. I have done a little work like that but not a lot so maybe someone with more experience can share. Also of there are any dents and dings now would be a great time to put some bondo on and make it look professional Smiley

A Co2 fire extinguisher can help tremendously because they can't breath. Like several others have said grab the back legs and pull them apart but have them spinning when they come apart because they will likely try to get you until they realize it's you.

Just make sure you prep it well and it should last a long time. I've seen several trucks that have the "cheap" spray on liner and it looks pretty good.

My cousin had a similar accident happen but it was due to fog and the lady was disoriented. It happened about 5 years ago and he still can't work. He had severe brain damage and forgot pretty much everybody and everything. He had lost all use of his right side but has gained most of it back over time. You are right it could have been much worse. He is doing better and can remember stuff now but he will never work and never be the same man he was before. Keep up the positive attitude.  Sorry to hear about not being able to use the bow.

Now may be a good time to get into archery Smiley all upper body and the squirrels would make a great target, the only problem is retrieving the arrows. It sounds like you have a great attitude about the whole ordeal. Still praying for a good recovery for you and comfort for your family in this trying time.

Did you acid etch the blade to make the layers stand out better or is that the natural finish?
14  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Another hand made knife on: October 31, 2013, 01:16:53 pm
Very nice work. I love the way a Damascus blade looks when it's been done properly. Probably my favorite style of blade material.

Where is Dr. Rooks office. Midlothian ain't much further than Alvarado for me.

I wish we had a good vet like that here in Johnson county. I've used Alvarado for years but don't care for their pricing so much. They do bang up work and are very busy so I guess supply and demand support their pricing, I just do as much as I can at home now. They have never done me wrong but they have so many vets you can't build a relationship with any one veterinarian. I like to be able to have some sort of a personal relationship with the people I do business with but after using Alvarado for 10+ years I only know a couple by name and they don't have a clue who I am. I'm no big time customer and used to only go 3-4 times a year (I have not been at all for the last 3) so I don't expect much more. They do me right just no warm and fuzzy feeling, especially at the check out.
17  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: I'm back in business !! Bits and spurs. Pic heavy. on: October 31, 2013, 06:13:14 am
Wow very impressive! Makes me want to be a real cowboy so I have an excuse to have spurs! That is truly some beautiful work. My 12 year old son has been very interested in black smithing and has been reading books about it as much as he can. I know of a local guy that does classes so we are gonna get our feet wet with him then look into building our own forge set up. I'll have to show him this beautiful work. Do you have a web site or anything like that with more of your work?
18  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: What Kind of Dog Food you use and What rateing would you give it on: October 30, 2013, 09:29:21 pm
I'm sorry to double post but I couldn't figure out editing my last post.

Mr. Whitten I went looking for information on Caliber feed and found the parent companies web site http://www.specialty-feeds.com/id13.html, I wasn't sure if you are aware but they have a rewards program where you can send in your UPC codes and redeem them for cash or what ever rewards they offer. I'm not sure how it all works but I figure it might be helpful.

I don't think corn makes for bad feed only for dogs with allergies to it. I guess if you are breeding properly and buying properly bred dogs then allergies should be at a minimum. Where do you get Caliber from?
20  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: American Hoggers on: October 30, 2013, 08:56:20 pm
I don't have satellite or cable so I have never seen the show. It sounds like what is on most tv these days. I was at the sell today and one of the guys there had them come out to his ranch to hunt. He said they came out, spent two days in the bar then brought out their air conditioned trailer let the hogs out gave them a head start then let the dogs out after them. Was done filming and the whole shebang in a couple of hours. He says the antics and stuff didn't bother him but when they brought their own hogs that chapped him a bit. I told him I would come hunt his hogs, he wasn't interested Smiley
