Anyone in the Florida Panhandle that goes hog hunting on the weekends? I have a AB catch dog I would like to get some more work with. Looking to meet up and hit the ground and hogs. Willing to drive a couple hours if I have to.

4  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Do I get him stappled? on: February 12, 2014, 07:52:36 am
I had to get my bulldog stitched up 10 days ago after a hog cut him. While we were out there it looked like a small cut. Got him home an realized it was more than I suspected. I did not not have any stapples on hand so I had to take him into the vet to get stitched up. He received 15 stitches on his cut. The cut was around 4-5 in in length and opened up about 1.5 in wide. No muscle was damaged just a flesh wound. Well I had the stitches removed last night by the doc and woke up this morning to my surprise he reopened the wound. The opening is around a inch in length. Some blood is coming out as well as fluid, not a lot. My question is do I get him stappled, or just let the wound heal naturally? Doc said he has some internal dissolving stitches that will be gone in about 90 days.

Edit: I tried to upload the pic but it said upload folder was full

Custom collars down here in florida makes good cut vest and collars. They are quick to deliver.
6  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: bulldog guys i need your input on: January 24, 2014, 02:58:40 pm
I own a working bulldog. He is only 11 months old but coming along great. He is from Jam Up Bulldogs. My pup is great around kids and adults. No signs of aggression and plays great with other dogs. He has worked on 4 hogs and caught them all on the ear. Hoping to get him out in the woods are deer season closes out.

I was in the market a while back at looking Neo Mastiffs and Bandoges and Lindsay Tornabene (Tornabene Bandogge Mastiffs) has a great stock. Her stock is proven in PP. But I am sure they can do work in the field.

Thanks for the info everybody. I didnt know if I should bleed the boar out while the CD was on him or break the CD and let the boar bleed out. Reading everybodys comments I will more than likely stick the boar in the neck and let my catch dog work him. Then field dress the animal.

Curious as to how everybody kills the boar with the CD locked on the boar. My pup is gun shy so I was thinking of using my knife and sticking the boar, and letting him bleed out. So should I keep my dog on the boar while he bleeds out? Or tie the boar up, get the CD off him and then shoot him? How does everbody else do it?

Thanks for the info guys. This weekend I am out on the island doing small game hunting. So I will see the tracks and hopefully see the size of the hogs out there to get a better idea.
11  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Running with just a catch dog? on: November 07, 2013, 09:46:39 am
I have a AB that I was going to use as a catch dog. Can I just run solo with him? Or should I bring a bay dog Undecided? Over here in Florida along the river we have numerous little islands (2mi x 1/2 to 2 mi) and they are littered with hogs. So finding them is not difficult. Has anybody ever ran with just a catch dog? And is it a viable solution? I have on order a cut vest/collar so my bulldog will be protected.
