HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: New pups are here!

Another year in the books with the pups. They did excellent. I love to raise a dog and watch them progress.
Mama dog came into heat last week, so we put our male walker in the pen with her. He bred her 3 times, so August 4rth, we should have this exact cross again. First litter was 9 pups and 2 have made the cut. Hoping that 3-4 can make the cut this next litter (if she has enough), but you just never know. Going to keep hunting them cast type hunting, and hopefully they can stick a track and finish it quick like the 2 I have now out of the first litter.

My main catch dog right now is a 1/2 lab 1/2 pit. She's caught every hog we've ever had bayed, and we've caught some decent ones.
My young dog right now is a 5/8 pit, 1/4 catahoula 1/8 bmc. He's doing excellent as well.
I also have a 1/2 catahoula 1/4 bmc 1/4 pit that I can use as a lead in dog, but mostly run him as a RCD.

I hear ya on that however 99.999% of the time if i shoot i want my dogs coming back to me. I rarely ever shoot anyhow but if i do i want them coming back. The few times i have bayed and shot over my dogs i havent had an issue with em coming off the hog, to be honest just about everytime i have shot the hog they pile on it immediately after the shot.....havent really figured out why but they do....
Mine do the same. If you shoot one around my dogs better make a good shot because they are going no to pile on him.

Our country is the same mix. Ozark mountains and solid timber. Every once in awhile we will catch a pig close to the road but not likely. Dogs have to get back and hunt real deep. I cast hunt my dogs and they will go the distance on any hog. My main dog is a treeing walker that can move a track and stick with one all day.
The latest breeding we did was with that treeing walker male and our catahoula gyp. Pups turned out awesome and we are able to cast hunt them. Daddy is a cast type hound and mama is a medium range dog. So the pups have done good for us.
As far as finding a dog that will get back there and hunt for you, I'd be looking for a hound type dog or hound cross. I've also hunt with some fine bmc/ridgeback cross dogs that have as much bottom and range as any hound I've owned or hunted with.

Sad to say today that I lost one of the pups to a boar. Gus (red dog with socks) met his match today. He was one heck of a dog while I had the chance to hunt behind him.

Well if they ever need a new home, I suppose I could help you out with em. That's good for a young dog!

I cast hunt so my dogs will basically go until they hit hog sign or come out on another road and I catch them.
I've had them go out 3 to 3 1/2 miles in big timber. Most of the places we hunt there is a road about every 1 1/2 to 2 miles and they will hunt that area and I'll pick em up and go to another area. I do have a hound and a catahoula that I can cast and leave and check back on them every now and again.
Then I have some dogs that I can cast, but they will only go out to 4-500 yards and make a few circles and come back to the truck.

I have a couple catahoula treeing walker crosses that will run a deer. They never have ran one more than a mile.
My catahoulas will about run anything that will run from em. They don't stick to anything but a hog though.
My main dog is a treeing walker. He will tree a squirrel or a coon occasionally but won't stay treed ( main reason I have him now).
I have a greyhound bloodhound cross that will smoke a coyote given the chance. She is pig crazy but will line a coyote out for miles.

Ivomec once a month does a good job. Helps keep ticks and fleas down. Plus we spray the pens and houses with a permithiam blend. Up here, we battle ticks more than anything.

I've always held with what my dad thought me. Breed the best hunters to the best hunters and if your lucky you'll get 1 good one out of the litter. We raised a litter of half cat half hounds here recently. This past winter was their first winter. Out of a litter of 9, 3 remain today. 2 are doing exceptional and the 3rd is just doing good. But they are all young and I'm patient and will give them a little more time before I make the final cut.
But regardless of breed, I've lived by what my dad has thought me and it seems to be working out pretty well.

Nannyslayer, yamaha doesnt seem to have many to choose from in their dual sport class. Is that 250 pegged out on the tach at 70+mph? I see it has a 6spd, just wondering how high the tach is at hi-way spds. Can the recluse (spell check) clutch be installed in that bike? That 450 i rode had one and it was NICE. Half manual, half automatic so to speak.
Not a 100% sure on the clutch but I think you can. You can cruise at 70 pretty easy. You'll be running higher rpms but you'll still have plenty of room to get up and go.

Hey nanny how did you teach them to ignore the tone when they're on a hog?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Didn't teach em I guess. They just ignore it when they are on a hog. Drive of the dog I suppose. I cast hunt and hardly ever send just pups without one of my older trash broke dogs. But they did jump a little nanny the other day and took her for a small circle and I toned them and they left it alone. We went to a new area a couple weeks ago and the pups went out to about 800 yards and jumped (one of them isn't silent mouth) and I toned all 3 of them, for some reason I just knew it was going to be a deer and it turned out to be a small sow. They all ignored the tone and caught the hog.

I went from a 320 to an alpha a year ago and the best thing I have ever done. Like mike said, I get a lot more range out of it than I did with a 320. Also if I lose signal on a dog, it will update enough to let me know which direction he is going (usually over 2 miles before I lose signal too much). Also love the fact that with my pups, I have trained them enough now that if they start running a race, I can tone them. If they are on the wrong game, they will leave it. If their on a hog they will ignore it.

Hate to say it but it sounds like a large dose of bromethaline. Had a dog get into some and that was the same symptoms. Warfin can also cause that same symptoms.

On my rough curr I run a southern cross bay vest. Does a good job.
On a couple of dogs I run hardcore bay vest. They do good as well but you will need to get the measurements to them because their vest have been running a little small on my dogs, according to their description on their website.

You can use fishbotics works good and I'd mild on there liver and kidney you can pick it up at your local feed store Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Cephalexin, or better known in the vet world Keflex, is more for bacterial infections of joints, muscles or of the skin. Amoxicillin would be a better fit for a cut dog. Rotate cut and heal with vetricen and you will heal them up quickly.

My main catch dog is a lab/pit. She's caught many pigs for me and I haven't seen her thrown off a hog yet. She's been banged up pretty bad before and finished the job.
