Its easier if you start as a puppy, but can be done with any dog. Build a bond with him. Teach sit, stay, and come. Start with treats or pieces of kibble as rewards. Put him on a 20' check chord with a choke chain. Give the "come" command with a small jerk on the chord. Reel him in to you with the chord and give a jerk as needed if he gets off track. Praise/Reward him when he gets it right. He needs to eventually understand that there is no option but to do as told. The shock collar will replace the chord after he is consistent on the chord. Give the "come" command and "nick" him with the shock collar. The "nick" replaces the jerk on the chord. If he's on his way to you, dont shock him when he's doing the right thing. Only when he goes the wrong way.
Dog needs to know you are the Boss, not just the guy giving him a ride to the woods.
I make my dogs sit every day before I feed them. They stay sitting, I put down the bowl, their eyes are on ME, and I say "ok", then they eat.
thanks for the info i was gonna ask u how iften do they have these  trials and is the ever any in south east texas near houston

Terrier Trials are every April and Oct in Tyler. Come on up and I'll help you work with your dog if needed. Tyler isnt that far and you can camp at the arena or stay in a dog friendly hotel in Tyler. There is room for RV's and trailers.
There is also the East TX Hog Baying Championship in Kountze. It's an open bay event, but they have a Terrier only class as well. We run our jagds in all open classes and do pretty well.

It's almost here!

Run a hog 4-6hrs!! Forget that!! If my dogs cannot stop it before then, I will get new dogs that can stop hogs NOW!!

The only problem with them are their size in my eyes. Where I hunt is real wet and they would be swimming more then running! Need a dog with some legs where I am at to run through the water that's always knee high to thigh high in a lot of the land down here in Florida this time of year.

I agree with the first part. If it takes 4-6hrs to stop a hog, you need new dogs.

2nd part, Knee to Thigh high water on a man means ANY dog will be doing lots of swimming.

PS: Jagds have webbed feet

A Jagd that's in shape can run all day. My Joey dog is 16lbs and will get a hold of the nut sack and sit a boar down. Aint much a boar can do after that
16  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: dog fights on: August 22, 2014, 08:20:00 pm
I have 2 jagd gyps at 16lbs each and its a real mother effer to get them apart when they are trying to kill eachother. They were fine together up until the younger one came into heat the first time, then it was war from there on out. They are small enough I can pick one up by the waist and kick the other until they let go, still takes a few good kicks from a 230lb guy......
Last time, I was close to the back door and picked them up, told the wife to open the door and I dunked them in the pool. Still took a bit to get them to let go of each others faces. I swear they'd kill each other if I let them go.
I'm just glad I'm not the only one with gyps that fight...
17  THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / Young Jagdterrier gyp for sale on: August 20, 2014, 10:59:05 pm
I am selling my 11 month old Jagdterrier Female. She has been in the Bay Pen a couple times and is showing promise to be a good hog dog. Fearless and High Hunt drive. Great nose on mock scent trails, and even starting out to be a good bird dog for flushing and retrieving quail. I raised her from a pup and I have no doubt she'll make a great hunter, Bay pen dog, or Trapline dog. The ONLY reason for selling her is that she wants to fight her sister (my other jagd). This is the ONLY reason I have to let her go. She has not had problems with any other dogs, but I cant have a dog that does not get along with my #1 dog. She may do well with other dogs or male dogs.
She's 13.5" and 16 lbs, smooth coat. She's out of Knitehunt blood. (Slick x Toni)
Looking to get $700 obo

Any puncture to the main cavity (chest/stomach) needs to go to the Vet. Its just not as simple as cleaning and sewing up a regular cut.
It wont be cheap though.
My buddy just had to take in a dog that got gutted to the emergency clinic and it cost him $3k.
Dogs might not be worth that much to some guys though.
20  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Antibiotics and such on: August 18, 2014, 10:08:14 pm
Yep I use injectable penicillan from feed store. Works great.
