No problem.  I had read,if I recall correctly, that using dogs in the Sam Houston National Forest to hunt hogs was illegal.  That is why I replied

I used to hunt alone, day or night when i was in east tx with plenty of public land available. I make sure to have my astro, a back up gps, a compass in case the electronics crap out, a headlamp, a back up light source and extra batteries for all ele powered devices, and extra water. The units work on 406mhz and 121.5 vhf emerg avn channel, which is monitored by nearby atc and ALL military avn freq.
iv got a strobe beacon with an ir cover that iv started toting but the plb is my nxt purchase, and then a backup handheld vhf multi band radio.

I could be wrong but I thought in Texas you weren't alowed to hunt hogs with dogs on public land.

I shot an 8-point buck that weighted 160 lbs - first of the season.  I'm sure it's all down here from now.

I live around shiro that is a very nice deer for this area.  I have a bro in law training a blood dog right now it's pretty neat alot more interesting than I would've thought.  He's gotten me interested, I've been working with my lab a little he is taking to it pretty good.

i do blood trail training and really get him interested.

Stay away from boar meat...a sow is good at any weight...

I know this forum is about hogs and dogs but I wanted post this pic of a recent deer hunt on my property in Shiro, Texas (Grimes County).  On Monday November 10 - the Marine Corps birthday - I took off work to go hunt.  I grabbed my 5 month old Blue Lacy, his name is Ramadi, and we drove to our property.  I left him in the truck while I headed out to my tree stand early morning.  At about 0720 I spotted a nice 8-point buck that was 100 yards away.  It was slightly hazy since it was early but I had a good shot considering I use iron site on my M1A .308.   I hit him and his backside went down.  I watched as he sat on the ground.  I figured I hit his spine since he just collapsed.  About 10 minutes later he stood up and limped into the brush.  i made the short walk back to my truck to grab the dog. 

Long story short, and after Ramadi found the trail with blood and a good scent, we made a few loops since the deer back tracked.  1/2 mile from where I shot the buck - and two hours later - Ramadi was still on the trail and going crazy as the scent got stronger.  Into a clearing he started barking just before the buck stood up in some brush and tried to get away.  I let the dog go, and he went nuts after that buck.  He chased the buck around a pond and cornered it and just kept baying as I approached.  The buck was hurt, it was a hip shot, and it'd lost plenty of blood.  I didn't have my rifle on me since I went onto my neighbors property.  I'd talked to my neighbor before the season started; he had no problem with me tracking a deer on the property but asked that I not bring my rifle during the track.  All's that i had was a K-Bar knife. This deer was cornered but not going anywhere.  Ramadi kept the pressure on as I grabbed its rack.  As it reared up I jammed the knife in the bucks throat.  I forced it's head to the ground and just kept pressure on the knife and antlers. After about 10 minutes it finally stopped breathing.  I had to drag that animal 1/2 mile back to my truck.  It was a crazy but overall I'm just glad that my Blue Lacy tracked it down. 

Dragging that deer back wasn't easy; I stopped about 20 times.  The picture is of my dog and the buck during one of those breaks.

When I was enlisted I was an 0311; went over to the dark-side as an officer become an 0302.  With 1/5 during invasion back in '03, then over to 1st ANGLICO for two more tours. Got out in '08.

Thanks for sharing.  It's a strange thing being back in the states after combat.  I think about my time every single day - I even named my new puppy Ramadi after the city in Al Anbar Province, Iraq.  I don't talk about it much to my friends who weren't over there, when I do I feel very guilty afterwards.  Great video.

There's several good breeders of using dogs Sean Cockrell is first to mind theres another guy around The Bend I have friends with dogs from both they are really good dogs but mainly for blood trailing and working cattle. Personal opinion is they don't make good dogs like a true cur or hound but I don't know sheep crap from cotton seed either.

I know it's early, our pup is only 12 weeks old, but I'd like to get some feelers out there for bay training.  I'd like to get my pup interested in hogs; he's a Blue Lacy...yes I now I've read the various forum article about them.  Regardless, the priority now is socialization but curious if anyone knows where I can occasionally go to get him near some hogs and/or piglets. 

People should simply just stop posting their dog pics and/or get off fakebook, aka facebook.  I got off that nonsense about 3 years ago. I do use an fake account with fake name, no friends just to look at pages I like.  I don't post pics, or anything just use it to lerk.

Yeah they'll be back for sure, but what you need to do if your going to hunt them with dogs is talk to your neighbors and get permission on there land cause 10 acres aint gonna cut it.

I'm initially going to trap some hogs, put them in some baying pens.
