HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Gators

i was talking to the cattle ranger from willis the other day, he told me he spent two weeks in chambers county, after the storm. he told of bodies being eaten by the gators. one of the federal game wardens got into a fight with a gator over a body and lost.
i spoke to a justice of the peace from chambers county who told the same story. he said he was flying in the dps helicopter and seen gators eating the floating bodies. they tried to shoot the gators from the chopper to drive them off but it did no good. all they could do was take gps readings and send ground troops in to pick up what was left.
you did not see any of that on the news.

yea, lavon tracked the collar and it stopped at the bank. he fished under the bank and found the dog and collar.
i have found the gators to lay on the bottom in cold weather. i have stepped on them while duck hunting.

i lost two. both times they were crossing a marsh, chasing a hog. hipockets lost one a couple of years ago, while the dog was crossing a creek.
the dog had a tracking device on. he tracked the dog to the waters edge and ran a pole under the bank and pulled the dog out. the dogs head had been crushed. all you heard when the dog was struck was a whimper and a yelp.

for all of you guys who keep hogs to train your dogs on. i have a question.
when you train your dogs on a boar hog. do you find you catch more boar hogs.
during the time when i kept records of my hunts i found i did catch more boar hogs when i trained my dogs on a boar. so what do you guys think. yes or no. _________________ Make sure you are right, then go ahead.

i feed my dogs hog hide. i would cut it up in pieces and let them have it to chew on. i would feed the dog that struck the hog the liver and the other dogs got hide and the feet. gave them a little more will to catch the hog.
i never feed the dogs any thing but hog parts. i would not feed deer or rabbits or any thing i did not want them to hunt. my thinking was if they knew they were eating deer, then they would run deer. just an opinion of an old hunter. good hunting.

i like to use fresh mullet or fresh shad. the shad you cut in half or into pieces. the mullet you scale and cut into pieces. scaling the mullet works best. we cast net the bait the morning we fish. either in the river or lake we fish or before we leave town in the marsh area. never had much luck with liver. the fish works best in my opinion. good fishing.

to answer your question. i never did use bull dogs. i ran curs and they would bay and i would shoot the hog. i found i killed bigger hogs and the dogs did not get cut. they would catch small hogs and bayed the others.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: anyone cross Jack Russel w/ a Pit??

you are right, aussiedogger i hunted many years with pit x grey hounds. the dogs were fast and would catch hard. the best luck i had was with a 3/4 grayhound x 1/4 pit. had more since and would bay a bad hog.
i ran a straight gray hound a few times but, i had the best luck with a cross of some kind.
in my opinion this is what i would call a running catch dog. if a hog broke bay, it never got very far with the gray hounds cross on him. they would grab an ear and lay on the side of the hogs body. the 3/4 grayhounds never did get cut bad, how ever the 1/2 cross would get butchered. i always wanted the off spring to favor the gray hound with the pit head and body of a gray hound. i would hunt them loose with the strike dogs.
i had a gray hound x hound, she was good but took to the hound more than the gray hound. she was a little rough and got killed. she also barked to much for me. the gray hound cross would yip on a hot track and would bay.

we used jet skis once and small boats to herd them. i dont know how the cattle will act around an air boat. how far do u need to move them. will you drive them or are u trying to load them.

i guess if i was looking for cat and bear dogs. i would do like jdt said. i would take a trip out west and meet up with some cat and bear men and pick their brains.
i have hunted behind some dogs that hunted bob cats, but was not impressed. they were walker and it was like coon hunting. listen to the race and then up a tree. might be different if the cat was bigger or a bear. jaguar even better. i guess that is why i love hogs the fight.

i had a friend, who moved here from tennesse. hunted bears in the smokie mountains. he would tell stories of the dogs he hunted. all of the dogs he hunted with were plott hounds. he would say out of all the dogs he hunted, plotts were the best on big game. bears and such.

i am from the brazoria area. ever year for the last 5 or so years, a momma panther and her kittens come down the brazos river bottom. they general stay between the brazos and benard river. the momma cat teaches her cubs to hunt by killing goats. some of the goat farmers have lost as many as 10 to 15 over the summer. the cat and her cubs have been seen by many of the farmers, ranchers and the sheriff's deputies. long toward winter the goat killings stop and the panthers move on, until the next spring when she has a new litter of kittens.

gardner 32 i am not going to bore anyone with the first hog i killed. i would like to take a minute to rag on you. lol i remember when you posted your first kill, how proud you were. i also remember the posts you made, explaining how bad of hunts you were having. i also remember the hunters on this site helping you with question. you took the advice and you have become a good hunter with good dogs and many hogs under your belt.
it is refreshing to see a young hunter take advise and go and apply it and catch hogs. i think with out the good folks on this site, you would not be as far along as you are now.
so son my hat is off to you and the folks on this site. good hunting.
