1  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Alice Texas and a leopard cur question on: September 15, 2016, 12:09:54 am
Since you know some about Leopards, does this look like the type of dog you're talking about ? This is a buddies dog, just wandered up on his ranch one day and works his cattle good. He was thinking a catahoula mutt but I wondered if it might be some older leopard blood. He is in Grayson county near Decatur.
She has got a litter of half Walker pups right now.
I can get better pics of her too.

That is great news Judge, glad to hear it.
3  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dalmatian on: June 24, 2016, 01:27:17 am
Another thing I've heard a few times is they are a one owner dog. You either keep them or put them down because they'll never take another master. My brother had a dalmation years ago and thats what he ran into. I wonder if the reputation for biting has something to do with that. I know some heelers thats kind of that way. Hates everybody in the world except one or two people but they'd do anything for those few.
4  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dalmatian on: June 24, 2016, 01:21:38 am
Well historically they were a real rough dog. Sort of a guard dog that would attack as well. They were Coach Dogs meant to run alongside your wagon and if brigands tried to rob you the dogs would attack their horses. So, lots of stamina/bottom to keep up. But I don't know that they've ever been used to hunt so I think instinct would be minimal in them.
One thing I found out is blue heelers have dalmatian in their bloodlines. They started with wild dingos and a couple herding breeds, but they were wild and standoffish but worked stock good. They bred in dalmation to give them attachment to people. I found that out because I just took a half heeler half dalmation pup a couple months ago. So far, you wouldnt know she was anything but heeler. Makes me wonder if she just takes heavily after her Sire or if the dalmation blood already in the breed kind of cancels out the cross all together and just makes another heeler.

I never heard of pseudorabies until this thread. After reading up on it, dang that is scary stuff.
Now do you have to worry every time you hunt that area? From what I read, it is real easy to pass around.

Just don't go bragging or posting pictures! There was a guy a few years back got his picture in the local paper holding the big old rattlesnake he killed. It was a Timber Rattler and tpwd DID track him down and slap some real nasty fines on him. I've heard the same about pictures online in forums, if somebody reports it. It's about like shooting a bald eagle according to the law.
But timber rattlers are funny, in Texas anyway, they are really tied to their den sites. You will only find them inside of maybe 3/4 mile from their den, outside of that you can live your whole life and never see one. That's why they are  on endangered list, most of their dens had Walmart and strip malls built over them years ago.

Cajun, I'd say something was weird with that snake anyhow, I don't know any rattlers that swim if they can help it. Also, *near* freezing really is different than below freezing when it comes to a snake. Dropping below freezing really shuts a snake down, but near freezing they can warm back up quicker when temps rise.
Good looking snake. Don't ever kill one and post pictures of it in Texas anyway, Timbers are protected here and they have prosecuted guys from posted pictures before !

I do know snakes well. If a snake was out at all, and the temps never got out of the 50's, that snake would barely be able to crawl around or move at all. It is almost impossible he would have energy to lift up and strike anything. If you were below freezing that day especially. Now if it had been a hot day and then dropped down into the 50's it is possible he could move enough to bite. I say it is less than 1% chance a snake is responsible just for that reasom. I'd say it's impossible except nothing is impossible, but that is close to it.

Both good looking pups! Good luck with them.

5,000 acres 5 miles west of Sonora close to I-10, never seen a hog one in 8 years. Talked to guys a few miles south of town that see one once in awhile, and just north of town that never see them. Funny, but some ranches around are covered in exotics too, the guy south of town stopted shooting white tail because he fills the freezer with axis off the place south of town and we've never seen a one on ours.
Now we hunted on 19 right in the middle between Fredericksburg and Llano that has held hogs for years but suddenly in the last 2-3 years the population is out of control. Entire Meadows plowed up over night. I'm not on that lease any more but some buddies are and they are getting sounders of 30+ on camera, multiple groups that big.
14  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Port Aransas Hunting on: February 17, 2016, 07:07:00 pm
Over 35 years ago my brother and I hunted a few places on both sides of the intercoastal  canal and there were quite a few rattle snakes...saw 3 or 4 each hunt...average length just under 4 ft long and a few now and then at 6 ft...

That's no joke. I used to collect snakes for venom extraction. I've collected snakes from California to Florida, probably 10+ species of rattlesnake alone in 5 different states. Most of them are docile and what you see as aggression is almost always a bluff unless they're hurt. They might swing their head at you but if you know what you're looking at you'd see the mouth was shut and it was just a bluff to scare you. The only truly *mean* rattlesnakes I've ever seen were Texas diamondbacks on the coast islands. Those daddy didn't marry mommy *are* coming to get you, period. I don't know why they're so damn onery, but it's the only diamondbacks I found that will chase you instead of try to run away.
