Not sure why my post went under this discussion. Meant for the new litter post.

Hopeful these last two litters make it. I haven’t been real successful the past few years but finally had a couple Black and Tans and a spotted dog I’m excited about. There are really rough like the original dogs I started with. Fingers crossed.

Here are the two pups I’m working with. The female on the bottom is going with dogs. The male up top still has a lot of puppy in him and is not showing interest. Hopefully that will change, he has the size I was wanting to breed, I just need him to have the drive.

I just need em to stop a hog and not number 2 in the box. Box number 2ters are the worse. Lol.

I appreciate all the advice. I’m just gonna keep 2 and get a good handle on them this next litter. I did that when I first started and the dogs were great. I’ve been hanging on to so many dogs spinning my wheels and there all timid and don’t feel like they hunt like they should. I want them to feel like a part of the family and it might give them confidence they need to be good hunting dogs. The pack this past weekend. My buddies dogs are stacked in there too.

Goose, thanks for info. I turned out the chickens when they were little pups to see who had the high prey drive and that the female I kept was the one running chickens until they gave out and I have to grab her before she could hurt my chicken. The other dog has good size and block head which I prefer since all my dogs catch and I've yet to need a catch dog in almost ten years. So I am really hoping maybe he will flip the switch but we'll see. Here in Florida it's pretty strict on how to train animals, I have turned a boar hog loose in my club~150 lbs and turned out my female with a handful of other puppies, they chased it down and bayed it, but I will attempt turn a shout loose in the woods and she if she can finish the race. Thanks for the help.

Overloaded is a great term. I’m gonna stock to pairs for sure. Thanks for the input.

Haven't posted in a while, been very busy with work but wanted to vent on my current situation. My grown dogs are getting old/passed and I have been restarting this past year. My first generation of pups are now 3 years old, kept a female and male. Both are running good but not producing hogs like the parents. The second generation (line bred back to uncle), are now 11 months old. I had 4 puppies I was carrying to the woods and rotating them with grown dogs and felt like I have been spinning my wheels (8 dogs in the box). Keep in mind my hunting partner has 3 pups from the same litter in his box. They were more focused on playing around than hunting and only a few would take off with the pack when they jumped a hog (despite running a pup with grown dogs).

I feel like maybe it's a quality over quantity matter. So I gave 2 pups away yesterday leaving me with two pups to take to the woods. I've been so worried on keeping the best puppies of the litter, I forgot my original dogs I invested a lot time in them handling and giving them more time on the ground. I feel like maybe I did this wrong with the first generation I bred and maybe that is why I'm having such a issue getting them to actually stop a hog. Not sure if anyone has struggled with this. The pups I kept one is going with the grown dogs 500-800 yards running a hog and then will fall behind (she's 11 months), the other male is the biggest dog in the litter and isn't showing interest in the hog at the bay, I figured he needs more time to mature. I have another litter dropping in a couple of months and plan to keep just 1 pup and focus more my time with it. Has anyone struggled with this? Maybe I'm culling way too late or hanging on too long. Feel like I should pick one or two and focus on them only. Just haven't seem to reproduce the quality of the parents yet.

Really good stuff guys. I'm in the process of bringing up some pups, but we're keeping all 12 among the 3 of us to see how they turn out. I have 5 pups at the house and have been studying them. I really learned a lot just letting them chase my free range chickens when I turned the out of the pen, and now I have identified the 2 dogs out of 5 that will beat the shrubs to death hunting for them and run them until they give out and catch them, they were around 2 month old when I did this and now are over 3 months old. Obviously, I had to stop this so they didn't kill my flock but I have a real good ideal regarding their drive.

I recently, cleaned some hogs and kept a head and used it to work them on a rope. It's funny the alpha male which is very aggressive and quick to jump on someone (food aggressive) was scared of it the calm male will latch on to it and stay there until I put him back in the pen. I do like the idea of using meat for winding. That's something I'm interested in trying. Good stuff here on this post.

I actually read a research study where they tested the vaccine on dogs and the survival rate was 15-20%, so really there's nothing effective controlling it. If I'm wrong, let me know.
13  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Pseudorabies vaccine? on: October 23, 2019, 07:37:03 am
Anyone know if there's a pseudorabies vaccine available? Was talking with someone who lost some dogs to it and it sounds like one hog could wipe a whole pack of dogs. Any insight would be great.

Mother is cracker cur, I bred her to the uncle (brown dog). Really interesting how this line is Heinz 57 with the color they throw. Most are gritty and bigger headed dogs which I prefer, but some are smaller and bay which I cull. My hunting partner is keeping the one with the spots. Well see..... Just figure I represent some of these Florida dogs with Cracker's post.

Nice looking curs. I got a litter of cracker curs 8 weeks old. Been working on these for 5 years. Hopefully I’ll get some block heads out of the bunch. Love a rough cur.

Just wanted everyone to know I culled the skiddish dog, did try a few things which helped but this far in the game I'm confident she didn't fit my pack. Gonna put some more time into some others dogs showing good potential.

Goose,

Never heard of the weedeater string but may give that a try. She's coming around already, but I agree with what you're saying. Kinda funny, after I made this post she started coming around and loading up in the buggy. I'll post back on how she does this fall. Thanks again!

Goose you have more tolerance than me for sure. I don’t think I’m on that level with her and I feel she will improve. She just needs woods time and experience. I was told she’s out of Texas stock but who knows. But I’m gonna give her time.

Just to follow up, she did great today and even loaded in the box by herself! Now I just need her to leave my feet, lol.

She's a happy dog, just doesn't like to be loaded up or put in a pen. Gonna try the long leash and some treats, just a pain to catch her if I'm in a hurry when they jump. I'm going to keep running her until she proves herself or I need the pen space. Toning/shocking will be my last resort. Thanks for all the good advice, I will give her time and have patience. I wouldn't call her skittish, if she was she would be gone already.
