1  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Tilden on: June 30, 2017, 08:02:25 am
Pretty much what everyone else has said.  I've ran dogs a hand full of times around Tilden, but I've been out there to catch cows quite a bit.  Wear some leggins if you have some. Cowboy'n or huntin, if I'm in that country, I'm wearin leggins.  Snake boots or double stitched stove tops because you are going to run across some rattlers for sure.  I'd keep some dex on hand for the dogs just in case they come across one and don't get out the way fast enough.  The boars do tend to get pretty toothy for their size out there.  Be mindful of where you water your dogs because of the gators, like everyone else said.  If your dogs do jump some javelinas, try to call em off as soon as you can.  I've seen those suckers do plenty of damage.  They don't fight fair.  The ones in the back of the group tend to fall out of pack, make a loop, come from behind and start ripping at the dogs hind legs while they are preoccupied with the rest of the group.  Plenty of tarantulas that look like they could eat a cat, if you have a thing against spiders.  They just go about their business, but plenty of times I've gotten off the horse to walk a foot, and happen to look down and see one the size of my foot, walking across my boot.  I'd run some python ear tags on your collars as well, ticks get pretty bad out there.  Bring tweezers because you're going to be pullin mesquite, briar, and cactus out of yourself and the dogs more than likely.  Call if you need a hand, I'm not to far from Tilden lol.  Good luck!

Yes sir.....it was one of those bays that had all the signs that it was about to get western and could go from bad to worse at the drop of a hat.  Ol' big nose Kate had already been bayed on this boat for a while by the time we made it close.  We split up so we could come in from both sides and somehow me and ol Tim took the absolute worse path to get close.  Could've followed the fence line and put us right where we needed up cutting Bulldogs loose, but instead, we took a "shortcut" or so we thought, and after dragging Bulldogs through briars, army crawling, and getting somewhat close, we sent them.  Like Slim said, didn't hear anything except Kate change the tone of her bark.  Everyone crawled in, them boys coming from the other side had that hog looking them in the eyes at one point, nose to nose. Tim went to leg it and it swung around back to us.  Somehow as he's falling down, I get it legged, and he puts one right in the heart as he finish his fall.  As much as I wanted to get this one tied, there was no way to do it without getting dogs and ourselves wrecked.  And it was hell dragging him out dead, 200+yards through briars, don't know how we would've done it with him alive.  One of those hunts that you're cussing the whole way through, until it's over, and you realize why you love doing this.  I appreciate the invite once again bubba.  Until next time hoss.

Glad to hear you'll have some of that bloodline on your yard.  I'd love to have a sure nuff cracker, if they're as rough as the floridas boys say they are, over here in my yard.  Just saying haha

4  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Bad experience at the Vet. on: January 30, 2017, 04:27:43 pm
Before I get of on this rant, let me state that my Vet is a good ol boy.  He's run dogs along side of me, turned steers in the pen with me.  Showed me things to do with a needle and thread that I have never seen before.  But he happened to be out of town, unavailable at the moment.  I went to his office, knowing he was not there, and a couple other Dr.'s and assistants would be taking care of me.  This wasn't anything major at all.  I have a young pup, I carried along with the older dogs this weekend, and he slipped his collar, and hunted with the older dogs all day.  He showed back up lame in his front left, limping pretty bad, and I'm out of anti inflammatory medicine.  So after the ol lady "makes" me take him to the vet, we get there.  First thing I hear is about how skinny he is, you need to feed him more, and so on.  I get that my hog doggin vet isn't here, but still, this place is in the middle of no where.  Surely they have seen a hunting dog, or at least  an active dog before.  By the way, the dog I brought in is 6-7 month, cur cross..  weighing in around 45-50lbs.......  he's leggy and athletic looking, but damn sure wouldn't call him underfed as they did.  Anyways, corrected them on that and let them know that, he doesn't sit on the couch and that's what my dogs look like.  They can't find anything wrong with his leg, because he's tough and doesn't whine when they prod on him, and I kindly ask for my anti-inflammatory pills so I can head home.  As I pay my bill, and ask when my buddy will be back in office, they let me know that I should change me feeding on this pup. And tell me how to raise a dog.  These people don't even speak when my buddy is in office, but now they know how to raise my dogs?  I've told him about his "staff". But just wanted to know what y'all have done in similar situations.  I lost my number 2 a little bit, but didn't take it to far.  Just curious how y'all handle these things

Has he seen another dog bay or work a hog?  Try throwing him in the pen with a buddies dog that knows what to do.  He might just need a little visual coaching.  Getting a bigger, more aggressive hog in there will help too.  Nothing that's going to break his confidence, but something that will charge and give your dog a chance to choose fight or flight.  Sometimes all they need is to be backed in a corner and the flip a switch.

Awesome to hear yall got it done.  My buddy has a place out in Sweeny, Tx that he wants me to run my dogs on.  Nothing but briars, brush, palmettos, cactus, and hogs lol.  A few clear cuts they deer hunt from, but everything else is rough.  Used to be a wetland conservation before it dried up.  Monster hogs but I just don't know how we would ever get to one once the dogs get one stopped.  But we'll never know till we drop em.

9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: News clip about catching hogs, on: October 24, 2016, 08:24:28 pm
With all that has been said, I'm afraid that some of the folks down here in Texas, that hunt with dogs, have no idea how close this is to becoming a reality in Texas.  What I mean is, without a voice, sooner or later, probably sooner than we think, there is a great possibility that they outlaw hog hunting with dogs.  Look what happened to deer dogs in east Texas during the late 80's.  Just look at the chain law that was passed not to terribly long ago in Texas.  This forum is great for us dogmen to get on and talk dogs, but social media is killing this kind of sport.  When people constantly post pictures and videos on Facebook and what not, of dogs catching hogs, or someone trying to sell a bulldog and post a video of it tearing up a pig in a pen, it's just fuel to the fire for animal rights activists.  If an animal is in the wrong,7 due to its owner, that's one thing.  I don't want to see a starving dog because the owner can't take care of it.  I'm a cowboy, so I hate when I see a horse for sale that looks like it can't even carry my saddle....but when these "Rights" people get involved, and want to take away what my dogs love and were bred to do....that's when I have a thorn in my side.  The TDHA is dead, but a new group, the TWDA has  started to grow, and I encourage all, whether you hunt or not, live in Texas or not, sign up and join.  It will serve as a voice for all dogmen/dogwomen to stand up to Austin,Tx when they try to cut the head off of hunting with dogs.  I'm a young gun to most, but I grew up hunting with dogs.  I also consider Mr. Douglas Mason a close mentor/friend.  And to hear the way he so passionately speaks about needing to have a voice to prevent these types of things, makes me a firm believer.  I hope we can just carry on the tradition, that way when my kids are old enough, they can enjoy this sport as well.  They won't have to hear the stories that I hear from my uncles and father about "how we use to run deer dogs" but it's illegal now.

I know this is an old topic but it showed up on my news feed and I don't have anything else going on at the moment.  This is the only Lacy on my yard, Hondo.  This pic was a few months ago, he was coming on a year old.  He was really impressing me, striking his own, ranging out 600-700 usually, and would be at every bay on the ones he didn't strike.  Shortly after this picture he got cut down pretty good, and this past weekend was the first time I've hunted him since he got hurt.  The first day he ranged out good a couple of times, was in on the first hog we caught, struck one shortly after, bulldog missed twice and bay broke, we were in some pretty nasty stuff.  And as the day went on he kept staying closer and closer to us.  I put it off on he just was that out of shape.  Sunday, none of anyone's dogs really performed well but a few of them would at least get gone 1000+yds.  The place was real piggy last weekend but they shredded a lot of the spots they were catching in so I guess they just moved out.  But this day, my Lacy wouldn't leave our feet.  He ranged out one time 400yds and came back and that was the last time he left eyesight.  I'm hoping he just was tired, coming off the injured list and getting cut down didn't have anything to do with it.  Got home and threw him in the pen and bayed great on a decent sized boar hog.  So I know he's not scared of pigs just because he got cut down but he definitely acted like he didn't want to hunt Sunday.  Anyways, good looking Lacy's yall.

Crustydog, I do not want to hijack your post, but I am also a new member.  I have read these forums
religiously for the past 3-4 years.  I have sent numerous requests to become a member, and have never received the conformation email until a few days ago.  I'm a younger guy, 28, maybe an older guy to some...but I have seriously been trying to register for years.  I'm an educated man, but I tend to live outside of technology.  I grew up on a ranch, and even in today's crazy world, I do not have cable or internet.  I don't update my phone, which I am writing this message on, and can't for the life of me
Figure out how to start my own New Member Post.  I apologize for doing this on your post, but I finally got accepted to the forums and know of no other way to post.  But here it is.  I'm thankful, I finally made it.  Like I said, it could've been my lack of technology, and or Internet, but I'm here.  I want to thank all of y'all for the help y'all have given me, without even knowing it.  I work offshore on a drilling  rig and have spent numerous hours reading throughout the forums.  Between my father, this website, and my close friend, Mr. Douglas Mason, yall have answered many questions I've had, throughout the years.  Be it trash breaking, how to go about cut up dogs, ect.... This forum is
amazing.  Thank yall for all yall have done for me in the hog doggin world.  And now that I'm finally on here, I can't wait to get to know the names and faces of the folks I feel I have known for years.
