1  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Hogs of Late on: March 26, 2024, 02:38:17 pm
Thanks fellas. Thomas, I am really liking Mosey. I think he’s a little slow maturing in a sense of he’s still got some of that timidness in him and is a little overly cautious of things, but hopefully that will develop in to some healthy fear as he gets older that will keep him alive. He got to swim for the first time on the hunt Saturday evening so that was a good experience for him. I am seeing improvement every time he goes to the woods. He’s a looker that’s for sure.

Not great pictures, but here’s a little better look at him.

I haven’t been on here in a while, but we have been getting after some. Been on a streak of teeth here lately, I am ready for some fat sows. Since the start of the year we’ve had a handful of piglets, shoats, and a sow or two, but way more boar hogs than I typically catch around here. Been cut down quite a few times, and got on a rank 225lb Congaree special that gutted and killed my Leroy dog that I bred and raised out of my black dogs, also killed my hunting partners Honey dog with a bad shot to the face/neck that wouldn’t stop bleeding. Cut down everything else in the process and almost took a chunk out of my calf. Caught another two boars and a toothy sow that I didn’t get pictures of last night. My young dog Mosey has been improving every hunt and doing well. He got two nasty cuts on a back hind quarter on the hog that killed Leroy, so he has smartened up and learned to keep some distance and bay. Tried out a new bulldog last night that was caught hard on the ear on a big toothy blonde hog so I believe he will make the cut for me. Here’s a few pictures from some of the recent hogs.

I only saw a brief article about it. What I read said that it was 8ft deep, and had some kind of gas emitting out of it that would have made them lose consciousness. The divers even determined it was too dangerous to go in. Along with the gas, there were apparently rotting carcasses from animals in the water as well. It somewhat implied that the bodies were very damaged from whatever gas it was, I guess almost like an acid. I don’t like to armchair quarterback, but I just don’t see how getting into the water would help the dog get out. If you couldn’t reach down and physically pull him up, the only option I could see is getting in the water while someone up top was dangling a leash down to you. That should have been very fast to snatch the dog out and then snatch you out. There’s a lot of questions from this, I doubt we will ever know the full story. It sounded like 2 died and 1 survived. I would be interested to hear his perspective on what happened.

It sounds like it was a dangerous ordeal, and very sad for the dog and two people that died. Maybe if nothing else, something can be learned from this situation that may help another.

Pretty strange story. Do y’all have a lot of those pits in that area? What was the deal with the gas coming off of it? I wonder if they thought it was just some rank water? Regardless, very sad for those that lost their lives as well as the friends and family that are dealing with it.

Lol that black cloud sure has followed me for the better part of a month! Hopefully it will clear out soon. I had a great time and enjoyed talking dogs and eating some good food with y’all. Hopefully next time I can make the trip it’s a little cooler weather and we can hunt all day!

Thomas I agree 110% on filming the dogs. I have tried to do this anytime I can. While I try to pay attention in the moment, I am more concerned about getting the hog under control if the dogs are getting rough on it and things are getting a little hectic. When I’m by myself I don’t worry about filming unless it’s a small hog but if I’m with someone else I like to hang back and watch/film and let them get the hog under control. I have buddies that want to kill every hog and I couldn’t care less about killing one these days, so it works out for both of us. No matter what I think I see, slowly scrolling through video will almost always show details that I missed. I have especially noticed this when trying to watch multiple dogs. When I go back through film I will watch every small detail on one dog, then start over and watch another dog. On a catch dog side, this will often expose the dog re-gripping even if it’s slight.

Dumb question, but have you tried to purposefully put Loki on a hogs right ear? As in physically stick him on that ear? That is very interesting that he chooses to only hit one side.

Talk to you like a dumbass kid? You’re the one that came on my post talking like an hole in the butt. I gave you the benefit of the doubt because things can get misconstrued through text, so I replied with an explanation. To which you responded being even more of an ass. I’ve seen many dogs saved and I’ve seen many that didn’t make it. I think I have a pretty fair assessment on a dogs health.

I’m not sure how where I’m hunting is relevant to you, but I hunt all over the state of South Carolina. I really don’t care where you or your friends hunt. You can do whatever you want with your dogs. You feed them, you make the decisions on them. If I thought the dog was going to make it I would have gotten her to a vet. I’m not going to banter back and forth on the condition of the dog that you weren’t there to look at. Not like your opinion really matters any more than someone else’s does, considering you’re not a vet. While you may be fine with throwing away money, I’m not going to foot a bill that big for a dog that won’t survive. Not to mention the last time I took a hog dog to that vet they tried to accuse me of injuring the dog intentionally, and I’m not going to get in to a pissing match with a vet that wants to call animal control on people that have hunting dogs.

I’ve spent well over $10,000 in vet bills since I’ve had dogs, so don’t try to lecture me about taking a dog to the vet. You don’t know me or know anything about the quality of care I provide to my dogs so don’t talk down to me like you’re above me or anyone else on this forum. I’ve never been anything but nice and respectful to everyone on here, so if you want to be a dick you can feel free to hop off of my posts.

I’m in a 2002 F250 7.3 on 35’s. It’s been a great truck so far but I definitely wouldn’t run it through woods or through mud holes. Driving around some fields is the most off roading it sees. I mainly try to use my buggy hunting and so I just pull in to the property then unload the buggy. My friend Warren has a 2018 Tacoma with the manual transmission and it’s been a good truck for him. He’s on a small lift with 33’s or 35’s and pulls his boat to the river all the time with no issues.

I really like the new Rubicon Jeep Gladiators too but I think they’re priced way too high for what is essentially a mid sized truck.

I use the Reveal X Pro cameras with the unlimited yearly package. Each camera you add gets a discount I believe. I like that it has good quality and you can request an on demand photo, as well as request HD versions of all the pics, and you can request a video from any picture. My only complaint is that for some reason I have trouble getting the videos to come through. It used to work fine and lately I can’t get any videos. I use the solar panel setup with them also and it keeps them fully charged. I haven’t touched the cameras in months and during deer season I was getting 500-600 pictures a day on one camera. Before going to the solar, the regular batteries didn’t last a full month.

T-Dog, Doc has been hunting well lately!

Cracker, I don’t think a vet could have saved her. I thought she was dead when I found her. She couldn’t move at all, and could just barely track movement with her eyes. The nearest emergency vet would have been an hour past my house and I didn’t think she was even going to live for the ride back home. If I would’ve had my gun with me I probably would have put her down in the woods. By the time I made the 20 minute ride home and got the other two dogs unloaded her legs were already feeling cold to the touch and her skin had the real dry feeling that they get after they die. I ended up not putting her down wanting to see if there was some miracle she would pull through but as I figured, she didn’t. By the time we got her out of the woods, it was less than an hour that she lived.

The emergency vet is CVETS which is horrible emergency vet that does not like hunting dogs. From prior experiences with them I can guarantee that they would have charged me a minimum $2,000-$3,000 and that’s not including a multiple day stay. Realistically it probably would have been over $4,000. I’m not paying a bill like that for a young dog that doesn’t have much of a chance on surviving to start with. Based off of the timing, she wouldn’t have survived the ride there to start with.

T-Dog, that sounds like a fun hunt with some nice dog work too! How is the outlaw dog bred? I’m getting one of the tan male pups off of Raylyn, I’m very excited about getting him going in the woods next year. That catch dog looks nice as well. I bet he makes a nice one if he is already handling so well going in to the bay.

Thanks fellas. It was a good hunt for the boys and I enjoyed, just ended on a bitter sweet note with getting a nice boar but losing a nice young gyp. By no means was she a superstar but she had been hunting well and progressing pretty good, and she sure had a lot of drive to hunt. I was hoping to breed to her next year if she kept it up. But oh well, that’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes. That is part of the reason I’m slowly trying to transition the yard to looser baying dogs. She’s been on probably 20 hogs and this was the only toothy rank one she’s seen. I was hoping she would learn to back up and bay a little more but based off of the cuts I believe she tried to catch out and he cut her down, then probably broke before the dogs shut him down 60yds away. I don’t think she would have went 60yds away from where he was after getting cut, then fell over. Just based off of the dogs that she’s bred down from, most of them that were killed young were killed on the hog because they wouldn’t quit it or back off and bay. She had quite a few cuts but took two hits right below the cut collar and I think those are the ones that got her.

15  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Wanheda’s Last Hunt on: June 16, 2023, 01:37:41 pm
Went for an evening hunt yesterday with a buddy. Started the hunt off with my buggy not wanting to stay running so we had to load everything up in my buddy’s buggy. 3 minutes in to the hunt we saw some pigs off the side of a road so we cut the dogs loose. They ended up catching a nice little sow in a creek about 15 minutes later. Loaded up and pushed to another place in the property and the dogs caught another little sow in a creek. The second one was killed by my buddies youngest son, his first hog.

After that we decided to make one more round and see if we could get a 3rd hog before calling it a night. My Doc dog went out and struck around 500yds, sat down bayed at 830yds. By the time we got the other dogs had honored him and were there. When we were walking in a smelled boar hog so I figured it was a good one. Well, it was a toothy fella. My buddies oldest son got him killed (his first teeth!) and after we got some pictures of the boys with the pig we were ready to go and I realized that my Wanheda dog wasn’t there. I had a bad feeling about it. She was laying 60yds away cut down. Her eyes were still alert but I pretty well knew she wouldn’t make it. I got her back to the house and me and the wife brought her inside and cleaned her up and wrapped her in some warm towels but she ended up passing about 30 minutes after getting home. I think she knew she wasn’t gonna make it and was trying to hold on until she was comfortable. I asked the wife to watch her while I went outside to feed the dogs and take a look at a cut on Doc and by the time I got back inside she was gone. I’m glad we got the hog, but really hate to lose this gyp. In September she would have turned 2. Her litter barely lived to begin with, and she was doing well, on track to make a nice little dog. Ironically she was born on the floor in that room, on the same whelping blanket that she passed on. I’ll miss her quirky personality around the house, but that is the nature of the beast sometimes.

Slim, my rougher dogs (the black dogs I’ve messed with since I started hunting) are blackmouth and pit crossed. I caught a good bit of hogs with them. I’ve been trying to get away from the rougher dogs and going more towards deep casting bay dogs, but no doubt you can catch a lot of hogs with rough dogs. I have two things that I would advise, first being if they catch they need to truly catch. My mindset being if you catch, then you need to fully commit and stay hooked no matter what. The other thing being if they catch and can swing around so that they’re side to side with the hog and just turn with the hog then they will survive a lot longer. My old Dum Dum dog would never get cut unless another dog was there and knocked him in front of the pig. Those dogs can work well on smaller properties as well.

Good luck with your gyp. From my experience the first few times getting cut down will show you a lot. They will either learn from it or they won’t. I’ve seen dogs get cut down once and then never get cut again because they learned how to stay away from the teeth. I’ve also seen dogs that got cut down every single time they caught teeth with no exceptions.

Cheston I know we already talked about it, but I’ll post in here anyways so that other guys can see this info if they’re searching…

I’ve used it since 2018 or 2019 with no problems. I do 1ml/cc per 10lbs, and I give it orally. Dogs do not like the flavor so I put it on a slice of white bread, then fold the bread in half and feed it to them before giving them their regular bowl of food. I use a large string and pull the plunger out so I can pour the Conserve in the back of it with my finger plugging the tip, then I just move my finger to drizzle it on the bread. It’s thick so you need a big 20ml syringe with a large tip (not a Luger-lock). In my experience you can go a little heavy on the dosage with no issues. I’ve given an extra 1ml to 40-50lb dogs with no issues.
