HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Please Thank TDHA!!

I would like to thank Mr. Douglas Mason. Doug was the first who turned me on to hog hunting. We were having some problems on our game ranch with hogs. I had several hunting dogs but none for hogs. I went to several bay trials to talk to some people about hog dogs and buying some hunting dogs. I got a crash course right there about bay pen dogs and wood dogs ha ha. Out of everyone I talked to Doug impressed me the most. Doug and I visited a long time about hog hunting and dogs. We started our friendship from that moment and I bought some dogs and made some hunting trips with Doug. The first time I hunted our game ranch we caught hogs and I thought I was a professional ha ha. After some more hunts I found out I wasn't! I could call Doug anytime and he always gave me total respect and time to visit about dogs. After a few years had passed Doug mentioned they were starting up an organization to promote and protect the hunting dog. Doug said I should join and from that moment I told Doug he had my support and joined the TDHA. I set on several Boards myself and I would like to thank everyone who has sat on the TDHA board. Anyone that takes the time out of their busy schedule to support something they believe in has my respect. This goes for every past and present TDHA BOD. I fully understand the commitment and stress you all endure, so Thank you for all your hard work. Mark T

Justin, I don't think they did half bad at their age for baying straight for an 1 1/2 hours and we had to pull them off. The pics turned out pretty good. Just let me know when you want to increase the time limit. Take care, Mark T

Chad, Those are some great pics. Glad yall ended up with a good hunt. Ol' Concho seems to still have it. I am still amazed that big hunk of muscle can go as far as he does. Take care. Mark T,

Chad, Glad you brought the camera this time. I still see the old man is with you on the hunt. That is great that you are able to hunt with him still. Looks like he is getting into it pretty good. I bet he is still giving orders as well ha ha! Take care and catch some hogs down in Encinal for me. Mark T

Luke, Not bad for a one legged gimp ha Ha. Looks like you have some pretty good help. I am glad to hear the injury hasn't slowed you down. Sounds like Hagen & Boy are starting to figure everything out. Opening off the truck and rolling out is not bad for those young dogs.

Catch, I have several different bells and they too are on their own collar. My hearing is horrible now days so once the dogs get past 50 yards I can't hear the stupid thing anymore. I just strap my DC30 to them and let them roll on. My dogs do not bark either once they have found it. If they are barking you better be raising the 30-30. They are usually pulling hair. Thank goodness they pull hair from the rear and not the cape ha ha. Mark T

Zypher, Catchrcall and Hawkins are right on with their training programs. You can use beef liver if you do not have access to deer blood. The object is to get the dog trained in tracking the blood trail you put him on. You can drag it, pour it on the ground, use a sponge, rag or whatever. Let the trail age and put him on it and give him your command to find it. You can train on the leash or off or both. The main thing is to put him on a ton of trails and give him the same command to work the trail. Some guys use commands like go to work, hunt it up, track it, find it or whatever. Another item I use religously is a bell. I always put a bell on them before they make a track. I believe in Pavlov's theory and feel that this is an extra trigger mechanism for the dog. My dogs know when I bring out the bell what they are going to do. They start bouncing around and get really wired and fired up. The bell has nothing to do with me hearing my dogs when they are on trail, it is strictly for the dog. By the way If anyone is looking for a good started dog with 50+ live deer trails under there belt ranging from Whitetails, Axis, Fallow, Blackbuck and Oryx I have one I would sell. Mark T
