5  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: WINTER AND A RAW MEAT DIET on: October 29, 2009, 09:11:56 am
Once deer season starts, my dogs will eat venison until i run out.  they lean out nicely and there are no negative side effects that I have seen.  More solid muscle, less fat, much nicer coat, and their sh!t piles are a lot smaller and firmer.  The only bad instance was when I gave them deer meat that was cooked and seasoned.....it gave them the RUNS!!!!!

7  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: October hogs - residential areas ??? on: October 13, 2009, 02:50:08 pm
My lil bro harvested a mature boar a few days ago in the Metroplex area(will not disclose location) with archery equpment.

The stomach contents of the boar was FULL of earthworms and grubs!  To my suprise there were NO acorns.
Longshot

wow, thats interesting to know.

I would guess for the same reason you start seeing a lot of deer on properties this time of year......acorns.  They come out and get the acorns that are landing in residential yards and properties.  Also get a lot of mushrooms this time if year on manicured lots.

15  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: dogo training on: September 16, 2009, 04:30:35 pm
thats fantastic.  for every one person who does post pictures, you will have 10 that don't.  Dogs, like people, mature at different rates.  Being able to throw yourself on a hog at 6 months of ageis a decent enough indicator of being a good catchdog, but its not the "be-all-end-all".  Some dogs learn/mature slower, and that doesnt mean that the dog is any less "dog" once it figures things out.  People on here talk about how some strike dogs turn on late, or dont turn on at all until they are given to somebody else, then the dog shines.  Circumstances determine A LOT when training a dog.

another post in the hog dog section reminded me of an old video I have of deer hunting in Mexico and having some Javi's pop out of the bushes.  at teh end of the video you can see the nice little buck standing there and looking at me and the javi's wondering what just happened

the second video is of the same place, just showing some of the deer on the property.  About 2:50 into it you see 1 decent deer and one nice deer that i really had to fight with myself over because I knew he was still young.

OUT HERE IN SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO JAVELINAS ARE THICK!  I'M ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT MY DOGS GETTING ON ONE CAUSE THEY ARE DOG KILLERS....   MY OPINION, BUT I THINK THEY ARE A HECK OF ALOT MEANER THAN A HOG, AND HAVE CANINES THAT SURE WILL DAMAGE A DOG..

very true.  they bite down and rip

here is a video of some that I shot a few years back while deer hunting.  There is a decent little buck that comes out at the end and just stares at me and the javi's, just trying to figure out what is going on.

18  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Where were you on 9-11 on: September 14, 2009, 01:30:45 pm
Got ready for a college class, walked downstairs, and saw my father staring at the TV with a blank stare.  I asked him what happened, and he said a plane crashed into the WTC.  Couldn't believe it until the second hit.  Was like watching a movie, just couldnt believe it was really happening.
19  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Javelina's???? on: September 14, 2009, 09:54:33 am
be careful, if you saw one, within a year there will be 50, and they gang fight like crazy.  They will gang up on animals fast.  They will chase baby fawns and kill them if given the chance.

Good news is they are fairly dumb.  They will generally walk in line with eachother if they are going somewhere, and if you kill the first, the rest will follow in suit generally. You can go through a box of shells real fast.  Went through two boxes of 270 (I guess technically .277) within 30 minutes on a ranch that I used to hunt in Mexico.  All of them in the same group, filing in one behind the other to a feeder.  Vulchers where there for a week.
