Sir, I have a Mason Catdo named Mercedes. Been owned by several on this board I guess. She was six when I got her and is nine now I guess. I only use her for training now. After a few months of getting to know each other she became one of my smartest dogs. Will find her own hogs and catch. Range is short (100-300yds) maybe a little more. Perfect for the area I hunt and an old fat guy. You better own a break stick or stay home with her. She hunted best two out and with my red cur/pit cross female. Was always the leader and by far the smartest of the two. Not as strong as my Bully/dane but equally as smart. If I had a few dogs just like her I would need no other for the hunting I do. My opinion, nothing else and your mileage may vary. John

dane, I personally use a Coldsteel SOS (too damned expensive) but had a chance to look over and see in action a knife called a Bubba Blade "Stiffie" a while ago that was very good and would probably buy one if I lost mine. Was told that it costs $40-$45 and has a special slip resistant red handle that is super. Also told made in West Texas somewhere. Although advertised as a fillet knife gets the job done and the owner uses it for cutting up the meat as well. Take a look at it. John

I always carry my old Colt. I think like some others here. Better to have it and not be on here telling a mournful story of dogs or people being cut down that could have been prevented. Have only used it a couple of times on hogs mostly on snakes. Load first 2 cylinders with snake shot last 3 are 255gr lead. Good day to all. John

PEACHCREEK, I don't own any thing with American Bulldog but your Peewee is one of the best looking dogs I have ever seen. What is his weight? A couple of dogs like him that would find hogs on their own and I would think I was in dog heaven. The difinitave answer to my small property hunting. I'm truley impressed. John

Sorry to hear this. Spoiled tomatoes have killed many thousands of people over the last 100 years and the older people don't pass on the precautions to younger generations. Operate on the "If I wouldn't eat it I won't feed to my dog" principle and you will usually be all right. Botulism is the usual cause. Again sorry for your loss. John

Sorry dogo24. I had a brain fart and meant Catdo on Mercedes not Dogo. Just noticed my screw up.

dogo24, I have a Dogo from Mr Mason's line and have been super happy with her. When I got her I was looking for a dog to train pups and Mr Mason had this 6 year old that he thought would fit my situation. I hunt small ranch Aprox 2000 acres and wanted a short range dog. As it turns out Mercedes is a dog that will find her own hogs, ranges 200-300 yards, will catch and is the best natured hunting dog around the house and yard I have ever had. You do have to run a vest on her and break her off. In my opinion Mr Mason's word on his dogs is as true as any man I have ever met and he could give you a wealth of knowledge on the breed. I am concidering switching to 3 Dogos and moving the other dogs on the yard down the road because she fits my hunting needs so well. Hope this is of some help to you. John

Got a early 90's Springfield stainless and several other 45 ACP's. Like it very much. Still always reach for the Colt Peacemaker clone when I carry on a hunt though. Just shoot it really well and no semi hickups to worry about. Hog DRT the couple of times I have felt I had to use it. John

Until I saw Silverton Boar Dogs reply I thought I was the only one carrying a .45 Colt. I generally use 250-270gr cast lead and have had good results but must try the FTX since it should be less apt to pass through. My hand loads are only < 900fps but have done the job every time I got into a tight spot and like the feel of the Colt clone in my hand. Low recoil and accurate. The highest powered round made is not magic and will only piss of an animal if you can not put the round where it does the best good. In other words if you don't practice regularly don't count on any specific caliber to work. John
