HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / cut vest question
|
on: January 04, 2012, 08:40:57 am
|
My main dog Rowdy (Mtn cur) is pretty rough - seems like everytime he gets on a boar he is cut. I run a cut collar on him - the problem I'm having, he will not wear a vest, he acts like I whooped the crap out of him when he has it on. Its not a full vest - just a viper bay vest. So I always end up taking it off of him. Do you guys know of any trick to get him used to a vest or have you run into this before? I sure dont want to lose him due to not running a vest on him. I've almost come to the conclusion - that he will never get used to it - and he is gonna get cut. Any advice?

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Finally made my cross - but have a question.

Well I finally have my pups on the ground - 7 weeks old.
I just have a question for the veterans - I am planning to keep all 9 of them until I see if they turn on. Do most of you do this when you have a decent litter or do you pick and choose. I plan on trying all of them, I am not going to sell any of them - maybe cull where needed.
A little background on the litter -
My original dog Goose (kemmer) was out of one of Davis Hise's best dogs named Shorty (Kemmer - Gold nugget/ yellow jacket) Goose was killed about 2 years ago in Oklahoma he was a great dog maybe a little to much yellow jacket he was very rough - but I managed to get one of his pups named Turbo (kemmer-plott-greyhound)
On the other side I had a great dog named Buck (kemmer - more gold nugget) he was bred to one of MPorter's best females - in which I got a female pup from named Josey (Kemmer/plott) she is a very gamey dog hates a hog.
To make a long story short - I now have pups from the Turbo - Josey cross. I have high hopes for these pups because on both sides back to the grandparents were great hog dogs. I know this is a science but I am trying to understand it as much as possible. To all you veterans - am I heading down the right road in my pup program?
By the way the pups look awesome - 5 yellow kemmer marked pups and 4 brindle pups - already had them on a hog hide and they are all very interested in it. I will post some pictures of them soon.
Thanks

Went out last night to the river, dogs winded this boar from the truck. Had him bayed at 500 yards, the hog broke and the dogs ended up baying him again about 500 yards in the opposite direction. Long run, but in the end the catchdog sealed the deal. Good boar 235 lbs. Ended up losing a second hog, dogs ran him well over a mile - through the cedars. After gathering dogs decided to call it an early night.

My partner Jed and his brother Jay went up to the mountains for two days trying to get on a lion - with no luck so they decided to get back to huntin hogs. They gave me a call, and we all met up at the "Big Nasty" ( salt cedars on the river ). I finally talked my wife into going - she has never gone with me berfore so I was pretty excited. We get there and collar everyone up, put Glencoe, Doc, Rooster, Dixie, and Elroy up on the box and head down a road near some thick salt cedars, about 15 minutes into it - Rooster, Dixie and Elroy bail off the truck - followed by Glencoe and Doc. The three pups lite out towards the cedars the two older dogs headed to the open firld then turned and took after the pups. Just a couple minutes later Rooster, Dixie and Elroy started baying - then Glencoe opened up and we knew it was a hog. We all started heading towards the bay and cut the bulldogs loose about 100 yards. We heard the catch but no squeeling so we knew it was a good one. We get to the bay and it was a good boar caught, we decided to go ahead and stick him (could'nt talk my wife into it yet ) Jay got the stick. We were lucky cause we normally catch them deep in the cedars - we caught this one right on the edge of them. Pretty rough boar - the bulldog took a poke in the leg, Glencoe got a cut in the side, and Doc took a poke in the ribs and shoulder - actually everyone turned out real good - no major injuries. After getting a few pics, we decided to call it an early night. My wife is hooked now - she has already claimed two of my mountain cur pups - to bad they are only 4 weeks old. To make a long story short - we had a blast - and the dogs did great. By the way - if you notice this hog had been caught before - he was missing an ear - we are the only ones who hunt down there with dogs so there is a good chance he was one that got away from us awhile back. Ha it happens.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: New dog/ ugly dog vest?

The viper vest is ok - I have two. The material on the front is pretty good, if you have a gritty dog though I would be careful using it. The first time we ran the viper vests one of the dogs took a 3 inch poke through the vest in the sternum area, and the other dog took a poke in the rib cage. I guess they are like any other vest they only protect to a point. But I will say this, without the vest it sure would have been worse. I also have a dog that will hardly hunt at all while wearing it - but as soon as I take it off - he is on fire.

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / RIP - Post
|

Im posting this for my partner. Last weekend he went up to the mountains here in New Mexico to run a few. He got on a pretty rank hog in a canyon, and it did a number on his dogs, he had five dogs cut, and the bulldog got cut down - the boar ended up breaking. Two of his dogs were cut in the chest and rearend, his little female Kemmer Rooster took a bad cut in the lungs, his bulldog was cut through the vest into the ribcage. He found his Ben Jordan BMC, named Post on the side of a creek Just sitting there, he gathered him up and noticed he took it bad in the neck and belly areas. The other dogs are healing up ok, but he ended up loosing Post. Its a shame because he was a young dog that was really turning on. I will try to add some pics of him - he is the bmc on the previous thread New Mexico Boar. We plan on loading up my dogs and a few others and going up there to bring this hog out of that canyon for good. Post belonged to Catahoulaman here on the board. RIP - Post.
