Not to say it's impossible but I'd be more inclined to say it's allergies or an allergic reaction to something environmental. You can give Benadryl (1mg/lb) to help.
2  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Wound Help? on: August 03, 2008, 09:07:37 pm
Put an E collar on him. Its a collar that is shaped like a cone and goes out past his nose, not sure if you can get it at a pet store or if you have to go through a vet (my moms a vet so i dont have to worry about that sort of thing) but it shouldnt cost much at all. Also if the wound will stay clean dont wrap it. it will heal faster that way.

Also if you can ACE him for ONE day just to get him off his feet. You will probably have to get that from a vet unless you have a "good" feedstore in your area that has that sort of thing. A little bute or something of that nature will help him with the pain too.

Good advice but make sure you're checking the Posted date...the original post was from September of last year Wink
3  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Parvo Vaccine on: July 17, 2008, 10:20:23 pm
Thanks for the response, this is my first time with puppies so I am lost.  What exactly is 7 to 1 and how much does it cost from the vet per puppy to vaccinate.

The 7-in-1 or 5-in-1 are the most common vaccines you'll find from the feed store. They are a combination vaccine usually DHLPP-C which covers Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, Coronavirus and sometimes Adenovirus. I prefer the basic DHPP.
As for how much it will cost you, I can't say. Every clinic has their own prices and what you'll pay at a vet's office and what you'll pay at a feed store is very different, it just depends on which way you want to go. You might call around and see what places are charging.
If all the pups seem to be healthy and growing then I think you'll be safe picking up the feed store variety and beginning their vaccines and deworming at 6 weeks.
4  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Parvo Vaccine on: July 16, 2008, 05:40:51 pm
When is the time to give puppies parvo vaccine?

Beginning at 6 weeks and then giving a booster every 3-4 weeks until they are ~16 weeks old. At least that's the schedule we like to follow at the clinic I work at.
If you try to give the vaccine before 6 weeks you will be challenging the immunity the pup already has from it's momma, there isn't really a need to give it until 6-7 weeks of age when the mothers immunity in them starts to fade.
Parvo and Distemper are the only two diseases that I really worry about them actually getting but most feed store vaccines are a 7 in 1. Coronavirus and Leptospirosis are the parts of the vaccine that can give a vaccine reaction, even though it's uncommon, I'd keep some Benadryl on hand if you are using a 7 in 1 just in case Wink
Hope that helps.

What is the dosage for the pen or amoxicillin?

Texasgirl, Can you elaborate on hydrotherapy?

Pen is usually 1ml per 10lbs.

Basically hydrotherapy is just spraying the wound/affected area with water. It increases circulation, stimulates the tissues to granulate (in open wounds) and speeds healing. Sounds like it wouldn't do much but I'm a firm believer and I think Krystal (Uglydog) has used it as well.
If it were my dog I'd spray his neck with warm water for a few minutes at least once or twice a day.
Hope he is up and running real quick Wink

How often and how much benadryl do you give dogs?

1mg per pound. They come in 25mg tablets (don't use liquid). That little jagd could get one tablet every 6 hours or so.
7  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Jagd and Cotton mouth on: June 27, 2008, 10:03:37 pm
Give some sort of antibiotic (pen is fine) and keep giving the Benadryl and Dex. Hydrotherapy works wonders. I'm such a believer since using it so many times at our clinic. Warm water is great but even just using the garden hose will make a difference. Keep an eye on the inside of his mouth to make sure nothing opens up in there.
Cotton mouths can have a nastier bite than rattlers so at the first sign of trouble get him to the doc.
8  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Snake bite vacc on: June 19, 2008, 09:26:55 pm
That's nuts.  I gave either $18 or $19 per dog.  I bought the vaccines and administered them myself. I don't remember if it was IM or sub-q, but the vet will tell you.  It shouldn't be near that high.

They were probably quoting for the booster vaccine that you are supposed to do one month later. In high risk areas the manufacturer recommends vaccinating and then boostering again in one month. That would make it about $40 total per dog.
9  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Snake bite vacc on: June 13, 2008, 07:15:43 am
does it have to be done buy the vet or can i just buy it there and do it my self

I believe it is only sold by veterinarians. If you are "in good" with a Dr. they may let you buy enough for your dogs and do them yourself. You have to give the vaccine below the knee on the back leg and try to get it under the layer of fat to avoid a reaction. It is not exactly like a regular vaccine.

I think it was matt who had a incident with a rattler after the anti venom ill let him tell you about it.

It's actually not an anti venom it's a vaccine that builds antibodies before any bite, an anti-venom is used immediately after a bite.  Wink
We've seen dogs that have been vaccinated and then bitten by rattlers/copperheads and had literally no reaction. A tiny bit of swelling at the site of the bite and that's about it. I think it's a very good thing for dogs in high risk areas.
10  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: TOP 5 High Performance Dog Foods - Your Input on: June 03, 2008, 07:24:35 pm
I feed Merrick. It's high quality = high performance and less food that I have to feed. I feed about 1 cup of food to a 45lb dog compared to other brands where I was feeding 2+ cups to the same dog. Better ingredients = less food.
No offense to the fella on the other page but I don't see how any animal could survive on Alpo.  Undecided

Does the land owner have the right to shoot a dog on his property? I don't know much about landowners rights in those situations. Seems like even though it was a cruddy thing of him to do that he had the right if they were on his property without permission.
15  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Slimey eyes on: April 20, 2008, 08:10:32 am
Do her eyes ever seem red or sensitive?
"Dry eye" is not uncommon. It can be diagnosed with a tear test at the doctors office and is usually treated with a prescription oil.
You can safely use plain mineral oil, a few drops in each eye several times a day. If it seems to help then she may just have dry eyes.
That might explain why the Terramycin helps but never "cures" anything.
If that doesn't help after a few days you may see about getting some oral antibiotics, the green color may be a sign of infection.

If what Realdogs posted is correct I have been feeding the bottom of the barrel food.  I thought beneful was good.

"plain brown food" is generally the way to go. The dyes and fancy shapes are just for your enjoyment, the dogs don't care  Grin
I feed the Merrick Wilderness Blend but I'm only feeding one dog so the cost isn't as important.

Buying in bulk or direct drop shipping to your house from the websites can cut costs also. Some companies have a "buy 5 get 1 free" deal.
19  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Maintenance Care Suggestions on: March 27, 2008, 08:14:30 pm
I agree with the Ivermectin replies. The doc can work out the proper dosage and save you a load of money. I'd alternate with Fenbendazole (Panacur/Safeguard) just for good measure.
Picking up poop regularly (at least weekly!!) will hugely reduce the re-infesting problems too.
Fleas and ticks are harder to get by 'cheaply' but with just 6 dogs I think you can do it pretty easily. Diatomaceous earth (food grade!) is safe for their houses and even for them to eat, it kills all external parasites. Spraying the yard and especially the borders of the yard helps a ton. The clinic I work at recommends Triazicide, it's at Wal-Mart and Lowes.
Frontline must be costing you an arm and a leg for those dogs!  Shocked
