Haha, I can't count 7 of the 10 pups are out of 1 male.
I really believe with some half sibling crosses that doubles up on the male dog, you can come dang close to reproducing him with selective breeding and culling in a few generations.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Tournament cheating

I know half the guys charged. They’re even worse outside of tournaments and they’ll be why hog hunting with dogs is outlawed.
Haha no kidding? They were all on Facebook when the story broke claiming their innocence and how the news article was full of a bunch of false info. I figured for the state to be willing to pursue charges after the fact, they must have had some pretty rock solid evidence. That kind of trouble doesn’t find a man on accident, sorry. Be interested to see what comes of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I honestly doubt anything comes of it. One guy paid a bunch of money and got out of the felony charges. Some of the other guys have been caught so many times on local wma’s trespassing that it’s comical, we are talking dozens and dozens. Still doing it so they never get into to much trouble it seems.

I’ve texted him a few times and he hasn’t answered me in a good while so I don’t know what’s up. I doubt he’s got rid of his dogs.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: What is hunt in y’all’s opinion?

Not to hi-jack this thread, but do y’all ever cast dogs solo or as a pair? A good hunting dog will go regardless, but a lot of times their range is cut down considerably. Maybe it’s the competition in em to outdo one another or relying on the other dog to do the work.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Age old topic: To Breed or Not to breed?

There is no perfect dog, just what you’re willing to accept and live with. That’s a concession and not an excuse, and it took me a good while to learn the difference when it came to what was breed worthy in my opinion.
For example, I have a male dog that is as good as anything you wanna take to the woods. Pure cast dog, but can make him take a cold track like an old hound and has more bottom than most want to deal with, BUT he’s salty and I mean salty. He won’t let a hog run him much at all, and if he gets help, he’s prolly going to try the hog. Sometimes it busts a bay, and some times it takes a vet to put him back together. That’s a concession I’ll make. Ten years I wouldn’t have fed him, but a nice find dog is hard to find nowadays. So I’ve learned to hunt him to his strengths and go from there. Breeding wise, I plan on trying to breed him to a gyp inside his family and raise the ones that really wanna bay, and then cull the ones that don’t have the kinda hunt I want. It’s not guaranteed to work, but all you can do is try.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Track dogs VS Cast dogs
|

I’ve always been high on track dogs, but after raising a pile of dogs, I’d rather raise cast dogs. I can make a cast dog take a track with alil patience and it’s hard to find the motor in one nowadays, so if you got it go that route. Now with plotts, I think any decent bred will be inclined to track hunt, but not many will cast deep.
My male dog and his sister was a natural cast dog from puppy stages. I knocked it on out of him by making him grind a track alil bit while on a lead rope and slow down. Now he’s alil bit of both.

I agree 100%. I want it all in a dog but one think I won’t do is beg one to do its job. I suck at training dogs so it better come natural or they don’t eat my feed. Once you own a good one to set the standard, you won’t feed much else.

How was their track speed? Did they lead a race, stay up with other dogs, did they make a lot of loses, or when you picked em up they were spent or still going strong.
I’ve seen a pile of cur dogs that wouldn’t run one over 45 mins. And people are happy to feed em.

Some nice hogs!!
So what I’m hearing is y’all are having to put yella dogs over hounds to get the job done lol!
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It was a solid line of yella dogs to a solid line of hounds that produced my male and his sister. I’ll give credit where’s it due though, they’re just a hound in a yella slicker suit

It must be something in that no. :a/ water. Last year when we were up there we ran two barrs way longer then we should have, Caught them both but took longer then it should have. Fine hogs man.
A lot of the issue was educated hogs dumping young dogs off on sows and shoats. I’m a firm believer some dogs won’t be dumped off no matter what tricks a smart hog pulls, but they are rare as hens teeth. Most young dogs don’t much care what they catch or bay, but it’s hard to hold it against em tying hogs behind em!

Yeah Ben,,, thats some fine ones.. A feller usually pays a small price when you catch ones like that dont matter what dog is on him.. When I had still hunted curs before they all died out,, I use to feed them cur dogs in to the race that them plotts had started in them bad thickets.. I miss having them sometimes ,, You can see em on the garmin pull out on that track 80-120 yards ahead and it most of the time would push that hog out of his comfortable trott and wind him out where he would find a place to set quicker.. Kinda using the best of both dog worlds if you will... This spring holler at me and we will make a round when you can
Yeah I’d enjoy it! Always like watching good plotts work!
