1  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Laying Hens on: May 15, 2008, 07:23:58 am
Who knew eggs fresh eggs would be so much better than the eggs from the store?  My breakfast this morning was sponsored by the new coop.  It was so delicious, I had to catch it on film.

This is the little bugger right after it was cooked...the shell didn't even stick to it!  I knew as soon as I peeled it that this was no ordinary egg.  That's when I grabbed the camera to document the event.  Looking back, I should have snapped a picture of the flawless exterior, but I woke up hungry...Not much gets between me a breakfast.  Smiley

Ahhh, the sandwich.  Very simply seasoned with salt, pepper, mayo, and pulverized by fork.

Yum...I never would have believed it, but this was the best tasting egg I have ever had.   The texture was superb, the flavor....I don't know where to begin with the flavor.  It tasted like an egg obviously, but it was better.  Cleaner tasting maybe?  I don't know...but YUM!

Grin Good job Mandi and your chickens!  I wonder if they lay such wonderful eggs because they like their house?  Hmmmm...

Thanks for all the great advice!  I tried watering more frequently and fertilizing first, and things seem to be improving.  I didn't see Levon's post until after I had fertilized twice (woops), but I am going to hold off on fertilizing again.  It looks like I have 2 tiny baby zucchinis but all the other baby flowers look just like the first round (no zucchini).  Is it possible that it is starting over?

I agree it will probably get root bound in the pot, but I thought I would try it anyway.  The little bit of yard that I do have is REALLY shady, so I can't have a proper garden.  Sad

Check it out!

PS...the grassy area in the picture would be PERFECT for a garden, but it doesn't belong to us.  Hehehe

Eggs are great for the pups, but I don't know if the air in the barn will be breathable if they have eggs every day.    Cheesy  I fed my pups some egg whites that I wasn't using in a recipe, and they had to spend the entire next day outside.  LOL  I do about 1 every couple of weeks now.

I LOVE IT!!!  I'm going to have to think of a place that I could use a deck so you two can come build it for me!   I will be there for moral support, but y'all do such a great job....I would hate to get in the way by working on it with you.   Tongue  Just kidding...  Seriously though, it looks great!

Y'all are not going to believe this, but this zucchini was a transplant purchased in early march.  I discovered that my pup was eating the leaves so I moved it out of reach.  That seemed to help because a few weeks later it was COVERED in blooms.  The first round of blooms fell off, and now this is what I have.  The poor things' condition is becoming more and more critical.  My best bet is that bugs are attacking it.  I am using 7 dust, but I don't think it's helping.  Any advice?

I hope these pictures work...

This is a close up of the foliage..pretty bad huh?

There's the little baby zucchini, but I am worried about their progress.

You are looking at a 12" pot to give you an idea of scale.

I know it's a little late for a response since this was posted last month, but I had the SAME problem with my pups.  I researched and asked around and came up with 2 possible causes...worms or eye infection.  Not wanting to take any chances, I wormed them immediately and ordered a tube of Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment (you put it in their eyes) from Amazon.com for about $15 bucks after shipping.  I can't tell you which one worked because I did them both pretty close.  However, I swear the worming cleared most of it up before the ointment arrived.  I hope this helps...I am sure your dogs don't have the problem anymore, but if it happens again.....   Smiley

8  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Welcome Brown Thumb! on: April 14, 2008, 05:51:19 pm
Hello and thanks for the warm welcome!  I was trying to post a thread earlier today, but I think the website was having issues...  I'll give it another try as a reply.  I hope this works!

I am new to the board.  I have a couple of hounds, but the only things they hunt so far are neighborhood squirrels and dinner,  so I am sorry to say I may not have much input on some of the other topics.  It's just that this forum is a heck of a lot better than all of the Texas Garden sites I have been on.  I am growing a bit tired of the run of the mill garden board where the little trophy wife takes all the credit for the gardening that her lawn boy did over the weekend.  I can recite articles from Better Homes and Gardens too, but that doesn't make me a wealth of information.  I'm just trying to make my brown thumb a little greener.  ANYWAY, I was reading a lot of these garden posts (really learning a lot, by the way), and just had to jump in!  I hope y'all don't mind....   Smiley

I have a "salsa garden" that is in an old wash tub about 20" across and 11" high...the soil line is at about 10".  There is one Patio Tomato plant, 2 Jalapeños, 3 or 4 cilantros, and 2 marigolds (can you guess where I got that idea?).  I know Hipockets (hi, nice to meet you!) likes 12-24-12 fertilizer, but all I had was 15-30-15.  My baby tomatoes are all between an inch or two in diameter, and I understand that now is the time to fertilize.  Will they be ok with 15-30-15, or was that a bad move?  Also, I am concerned about the tub being too crowded...think that's an issue?

And just for giggles, does anyone else's dog eat their squash plants, or are my pups just strange?  So far they haven't touched anything else...just the zucchini.

By the way...nice stumps.   Tongue
