I have a female bmc gyp 14 months old. I got her 4 months ago and started her on hogs she wanted nothing to do with them but took her to the woods and she bayed some cows so when we worked our cows couple wks ago I took her along with my older female. She fell right in and worked like she knew what she was doing. I worked her 3 straight days so by started I mean those 3 days plus the one day in the woods is her experience. I would like to trade for a younger bmc or cross (as long as its not pitt) started on hogs and showing interest. If I needed another cow dog I would keep her but I dont. Located near sulphur springs tx. Call or text 903-461-6471 I don't check my email. Hogzilla2424@yahoo.com . Can send pics and will also sale but rather trade.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: got a question for you cattlemen out there...

I work on a ranch that my dad operates we have right around 1000 head of 100% santa gertrudis cattle. I HATE THE SOB"S!! these cattle are fairly easy going in the pasture but as soon as you get them in a pen you have to watch your back at all times. they get plum crazy especially if they have a calf on the ground. hat being said if your gonna run them anyway i would say take the S.G. bull and charlais cows. our bulls seem to be alot more gentle wich we also spend more time around them also cause we pull them off the cows for 3 months of the year. S.G. bulls do put out smaller calves at birth. that is one good thing with young heifers. Your plan with selling the older heifers and keeping the calves from year to year is not gonna work so well money wise. it takes a heifer roughly 18-22 months to become mature enough to breed. therefor your looking at around 29-34 months between calving sessions. and also as stated previously heifers are a pain to get started calving especially if they are still not matured enough. i would suggest starting out with some seasoned cows and a 2-3 year old bull. let the older cows breed and calve maybe keep a few heifer calves this year and breed your old cows again sale your calves that you dont keep save a few from the next calve crop breed cows and the heifers from the year befor and then maybe et rid of some older cows as you bring in the younger heifers. just repeat that year by year. thats just how we run our operation here and this ranch went from 25 head to around 1000 were we have kept it for around 10 years. hope this helps

i have heard stories from older men of using pitts and pitt X's to catch wild or crazy cattle back in tha day when thats what they did but they also used them with their cur dogs. i got no proof only an assumption but i think some of those men may have ACCIDENTLY started catching hogs and may have thought it might have been easier to work and mark the hogs this way. like i said i dont know that i just figured some of it may have started that way.

the garmin is sure worth the money but if you run dogs that are consictenly over 6/10s a mile you had better get the long range antenna. some places i hunt i get great signal with short one but others i can hardly pick up 700 yrds. but you say you dogs are short range so u should ok..(NO offense)

well im a whole 23 yrs old and still in pretty good shape so if its just me and one of my in shape buddies around 20 minutes a mile so 2 miles i would say around 45-50 minutes give or take. but me being the only one with a compass or tracking system if other people go with us that may not be so quick it has taken nearly 2 hours to get to a bay at 1.5 miles. its definately not fun walking that far but gotta love my hunting especially when there is a good pig on the other side of the dogs.

well (just my experiences...) where i hunt i do have the ability to go 2-3 miles and still be on land that i have permission.on most of the places i hunt... like anyone though i dont like going that far but sometimes you just got too if you can. i prefer MY STYLE of dogs! in my eyes my dogs are long range dogs but they are the kind that start short and keep getting furthur and furthur as they work. sometimes i go out and they are bayed within 300yds sometimes i go and they bay farther i have had them strike as far out as 1.5 miles and bayed at 2.4 miles on the garmin. the places i hunt are big so you never know where the hogs are. i dont have the ability to drive into most of them so i walk just about everywhere. i have nothing against a short range dog and would not cull one that produced for me. i hunted shot range dogs for a pretty good while when i fist started (bout 5 yrs ago) and loved it but eventually i got ahold of along range dog and fell in love with that style cause my dry runs didnt happen near as often. thats why i prefer MY STYLE of dogs. and let me say MY STYLE of long range dog IS DIFFERENT from anyone elses cause my style is MY PREFERENCE same as anyone elses is THEIR PREFERENCE.
