1  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / First catch on: May 16, 2010, 10:14:34 pm
Well I finally got a chance to take out my dog Precious for her first taste of hunting. She is a Dogo/AB mix I got from Bar M at one of the hog bays in Bremond last summer. She is about 10 months old and weighs in around 80lbs. We weren't sure how she would respond so we introduced her slowly and she showed us what she was made of. Luckily we caught 2 pigs that were a good size for her to learn on and had some other great dogs there to show her the way.

This is the first catch of the night. She seemed reluctant to engage at first but was very curious as to what was going on. After a couple of minutes she decided she wanted part of the action as well. Not very good placement with the bite but she bit hard and had to be broken off. She later proved to be a fast learner.

This is the second catch of the night. Once again she seemed hesitant to engage but did a great job once she did. Since it was smaller than the first and she had a much better bite we thought we would see how she could do by herself. All the other dogs were called off and the pigs hind legs were released. She did an excellent job handling the pig herself and kept it pinned down the whole time.

A special thanks goes out to NThoghunter for allowing me to bring her along for the trip and providing another great hunting experience.
2  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Buying dogs specifically for breeding on: May 15, 2010, 04:59:06 pm
Maybe I should give a little more info on what my plans would be. The dogs would be Dogo's that can be traced back to Argentina and probably to the creators of the breed. The kennel's website is very informative on the breed and it's history. The owner has a long history with the breed, hunting and breeding for show. Their website is www.dogoargentino.com Now I wouldn't necessarily buy dogs from him, but this is the type I am looking for.

The dog's would definately be out of a champion line and be expensive hence the no-hunting policy I would personally have for them. Their pups on the other hand would be a different story.
3  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Buying dogs specifically for breeding on: May 15, 2010, 12:26:48 pm
Has anyone here bought a dog specifically for breeding purposes? I am throwing around the idea of buying some dogs just for that. No hunting would be involved to help insure the dogs arent hurt and would cause a loss of investment. My question is that since the initial cost would be fairly substancial do you think it would be worth my time and money. I wouldnt be starting any sort of a kennel to make money off of, only to get dogs for my own hunting use and sell any "extra" pups.
4  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Kudos to Wild Boar USA / Ugly Dog Ranch on: May 14, 2010, 11:23:10 am
Just thought I would make a quick post about how pleased I am with Wild Boar USA Ugly Dog Ranch. I ordered a new vest and lead on Tuesday evening and received a phone call Wednesday morning from them to ensure that I had ordered the proper size. The order just came in the mail today (Friday). Now that is some good service!  Grin

mostly APBT's, have shown that those trained to pull for their owners satisfaction (gameness)
Nick, where did you get your info from. Where did you get this definition of gameness. I think you may need to do some more research on your dogs. Gameness cannot be taught, if that was the case any dog could be a catchdog. My definition of gameness -- willingness to continue despite taking punishment.  Don't confuse gameness with aggression. An aggressive dog is not necessarily a game dog. People who don't understand this take aggressive dogs, breed them and make more aggressive dogs. In the 1970s a pit bull attack was unheard of. The men who had the dogs knew what to look and breed for. It wasn't until the dogs ended up in the hands of ignorant thugs that pit bull attacks started taking place. BAD BREEDING. Not knowing the difference between gameness and aggression. In my opinion, the APBT has the most stable temperament of any dog. I raised gamedogs for years and never had a dog just turn and attack. They are what they are, if I had a dog that acted funny towards people I knew it from the first day I had them. The stories of these dogs (most of the time) turning and just attacking is BS. The dog was human aggressive the whole time and I guarantee the owner knew it. The phrase "turn on" is a whole different story than what it has been recognized as.  Nick, I don't expect you to understand everything I'm saying, people with gamedogs know exactly what I mean.  I'm sorry, I started rambling on. Nick, my advice is to search and study up on the gamedog, maybe even own a few then form  your own opinion. Don't believe everything the media tells you.

My source of information came from a random book I come across at the pet store, "Training Secrets for Bully Breeds." The book is comprised of several articles written by professional trainers and some dog behaviorists. Dr. Ian Dunbar, a world reknown trainer/animal behaviorist, was contacted for some articles since he loves the bully breeds.

They state that although "game" originated as a fighting term, it refers to a dog's tendency to continue in the face of adversity. What I was refering to in my previous post was that these breeds thrive off of their masters satisfaction and will continue to try as hard as they can for as long as they can. They then go on to talk about weight pulling competitions and dog fighting, stating that owners will position themselves in such a way that the dog can always see them rooting for them.

Like I said before, I am no expert by any means. I just like to read and this information is what the experts have to say about the subject.

I don't know much about blue pits nor do I know much about training dogs. I am an avid researcher and have implemented many techniques that are very common place on my first pup and all have held true. With that being said, the "gameness" aspect of a dog may be able to be taught if done correctly. For example, weight pulling dogs, mostly APBT's, have shown that those trained to pull for their owners satisfaction (gameness) regularly out perform those trained differently. Dogs who are trained to pull solely for the satisfaction of treats or some other reward have been shown to be very tempermental and give up easily....

Well, my grandpa's is a Super A although my dad isn't sure exactly how to tell the difference. He did say that there should be a number stamped into the side of the carb. I dont know if that helps any but I guess its a starting point.

9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / No "Pit Bulls" allowed! on: November 27, 2009, 08:52:02 pm
I just thought I would share a story that happened to me the other day. My brother and I were at the high school ag barn in Granbury so his kids could feed their goats. We brought along our dogs since they were both puppies so we could introduce them to some livestock and further their socialization. His dog is basically a mutt that they found one morning in the yard and no one claimed it. My dog is a dogo x ab cross I got from Bar M.

Both dogs were leashed and showing no aggression what so ever towards anything...people, animals, one another, etc. Some guy pulls up and tells us that dogs aren't allowed at the ag barn "especially pit bulls because who knows when it would attack someone or an animal." My brother politely informs the guy that it isn't a "pit bull." The guy then responds with "well then what the hell is it?" So we tell him which causes him to change his story and that only "working" dogs are allowed up there.

I find it somewhat humorous but it made me mad at the same time. That was my first personal experience with the general public's bias towards APBT's and my dog isn't even one! He just assumed that because her ears are cropped. To top it all off she isn't even 5 months old yet...

Heres one of our newest addition Moby a american bulldog x dogo we got from  Bar-M 4 months old one more of  Moby gripping about the chickens in his feed bowll

This is Precious...Moby's sister. We got her from Bar M at the hog bay. I have been wondering how the other pups in the litter have been doing as a gauge for her. She is about 30-35 lbs as a guess. She weighed 22 lbs at the vet about a month ago.

Thanks for the input. That is another brand I have looked into as well. I found a website to help with the basics on choosing a food that I'm sure a lot of people will find useful. I dont really know how reputable this site is but here it is anyways...

14  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Science Diet ingredients?? on: October 16, 2009, 08:00:34 pm
Hey ya'll,

I recently was told to beware of dog foods having corn listed as the first ingredient because it is an indicator of poor quality. I just recently got my first dog (ABxDogo) and have been trying different name brands to see which she likes best. The vet recommended Science Diet or Eukanuba, both of which I have heard to be top notch from multiple sources. While at the store today I started looking at ingredients on different name brands and noticed that Science Diet had corn listed first on the ingredients list. Most other brands did not including a lot of the really cheap brands.

I guess in a nutshell what I am trying to ask is if I should pay more attention to the content percentages (Protein, Fat, etc) listed or the actual ingredients?

That Nubbin is a damn good looking dog. Is he from a Johnson line?
17  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Enough is enough... on: July 30, 2009, 10:43:49 pm
Just like I said in the other post...it reminds me of why my uncle quit competitive coon hunting. Too many people are too concerned with their own reputations and not willing to honor another persons dogs capabilities and the other hunters kill/catch(in that case).
