700, welcome to the board.
If you have 4 hours one morning just come and help out around the training kennals and you might pick up a thing or two.  I don't know a lot but because of age have forgotten a lot also.  but can show you what not to do, maybe.

Always glad to have a newbe come by and see how things work.

Have a lot of patiances and hunt with dogs before you buy something on what they said dog would do.  If you see it hunt before you buy it should hunt after you buy.

When and if it EVER cools off-I may do just that.I wouldnt mind the drive or seeing how you have things set up.Thanks to all for the welcome and tolerating the dumb questions.

700,

    Any breed of hog dog should be able to be both family pet/ companion and hog dog.  Some people have different opinions of how handling a dog as a pet can effect the dogs hunting performance.  I would argue that it depends on the dog.  I have dogs that are both pets and hunting dogs, and I have dogs that are only hunting dogs.

I just know of a fella that does not allow his friends or family near his pens.I thought that that was kinda odd,but then I have only messed with Labs & Beagles so I figured maybe it was just a hog dog thing.Now I find out -thats just his preference.

You just opened a hole can of worms no two people hunt the same no two people kennel there dogs the same me personaly I pen usealy two dogs to a 20 by 20 pen I alternate but most the time males with males so on makes the dogs buddy up  I will haul one dog with me at a time for socialization with other people and differnt enviroments but hey that's just me

So your saying its okay to keep the dog around other dogs when not hunting? I would think that would be a good idea-but then ran into a guy that swears off anybody from coming around his dogs-friends or family.Just learning,aint trying to do anyhting more than figure out the do's and donts.

cward;
I'm over here in Aggie land.College Station.I am just to the point of thinking about getting a dog,BUT not as of yet.I want to keep going to the bay contest and keep going to all the events I can and learn all I can before I get a dog.
Yeah I know about the loss of a dog.It hurts just to see my friends dogs get hurt.I watched him have to put one down and that part (just being honest) did not like that part to much-but hey its hunting.I am to old to go running through the woods chasing hogs in the heat of the day or chasing them for miles through the woods.I use to run beagles,lost a few and it didnt matter how close or not-it hurt.I grew up in the Valley (Harlingen) hunting hogs on the river with Pitt Bulls etc etc.I like hunting them pigs with or without a dog.I just dont want to get a dog and know nothing about the do's and donts of hog dogs.Thanks for the reply.

Okay I know this will be a remington vs winchester type of thread but I am going to take a shot at it anyways.Whats a good hog dog that will get the job done but is family friendly-meaning -I dont have to worry about him with my other dogs or kids running aorund the backyard.Or do you guys keep your dogs totally isolated and penned from family and friends etc .Just asking,remember I am new to this.
