Yeah, Shawn that new place we have been hunting is right there. He may have seen our pigs!
2  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: 10-3-09, hunt with some new friends on: October 06, 2009, 07:09:56 pm
We could probably use rip on that place with the nasty bottom too. He can handle short hunts. After a couple hours his leg starts to hurt but as overrun as that place is it don't seem like we are gonna have to hunt too hard to find em.

It's nice to see I'm not the only one who doesn't think a three year old is too young to take to the woods. My four year old is a self proclaimed hog hunter. Keep 'em in the woods guys!  We need more dads like yall.

nice boar. those are some pretty impressive totals as well. Good job.
8  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Just wondering. on: August 23, 2009, 10:39:22 pm
I've noticed that most everyone that posts on here is from south east texas. How many of you guys are from our neck of the woods here in north east texas, along the I-20 area? I was also wondering if those that are from around here are having the same issue with finding land. We cant seem to find peices of land that are over 400-500 acres, most are under 200. Seems like the bigger tracs of land are just really hard to come by around here which is not a good thing if you have dogs that range out very far.  We have had to pass on so many offers to hunt on places cause they are just too small for the type of dogs we hunt with. Just curious if it was just us or what?
9  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: RIP Buster on: July 30, 2009, 10:59:56 pm
Buster was one of those dogs that only come along once in a while. I knew I was lucky to have him. I just wish he could have gone out doing what he loved and not from getting rolled by a truck. He will be missed and will be the first dog I add to my pack when I get to the other side. R.i.p. you ole daddy didn't marry mommy.
10  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: how many dogs u need on: May 20, 2009, 09:21:19 pm
I'm just shocked there wasn't a dog fight with that many dogs on one hog.
11  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: 5-2-09 boar and a couple more on: May 02, 2009, 05:35:56 pm
Jeff, after a hunt like that there is never a problem sleeping.  You missed out today.  We were due for a big hog and we kept saying that and today it happened.  After almost getting bit by a copper head I may have to take a hiatus though.  If it hadn't been for Michael spotting it I would have been laid up in the hospital today. Damn snakes!
12  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Running Catch Dogs (How Many Have) on: April 24, 2009, 09:24:12 pm
That's exactly how we use my bulldog.  She is a running catch dog, as in she runs loose and immediately runs to any bay in earshot.  She has occasionally caught a few hogs on her own without a strike dog finding them first but her job in our pack is to run loose and catch hogs when they are bayed up or to shut down any runners. That's my definition of a running catch dog(rcd).
13  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Coyotes at the bay- East Texas - Leon County Question on: April 23, 2009, 10:10:50 pm
Shawn, myself, and a few other buddies were hunting outside of Tyler and the dogs were working this plumb thicket. About 30 yards away from us my female rcd jasmine came around a cedar tree and right behind her a large yote was trailing her.  He was almost prancing like he was trying to court her.  It was kinda weird how playful he was acting around domestic dogs especially since she was the only female and she is fixed.  Of course once he spotted us he split but it definitely got our attention.

Dang Shawn by the looks of roxie's big gut it looks like the food bowl your feeding her out of is a freaking wash tub.  Cheesy
15  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Running Catch Dogs (How Many Have) on: April 22, 2009, 09:11:16 pm
I used to use my male and female ab's as a pair of running catch dogs and had good luck finding hogs with them.  The only problem with using bulldogs as running catch dogs is that they are incredibly short range and won't find as many hogs as a good cur. I also ran into a problem with my male exhausting all of his energy after the first hog or two and not having the stamina to catch as solid.  My female on the other hand is a freak and can run all day and catch multiple hogs and never even show a sign of tiring. I have gone to using a mix of rcd's and cur's.  My female is always used as a rcd and it works great in tandem with a bulldog on a lead and two or three curs. Jmo, running catch dogs alone are good if they have the stamina to be solid the whole hunt but I think you will find more hogs with a couple of good, and I stress GOOD, curs in the mix.   It also doesn't hurt to have a few open mouths on a catch so you can hear when the hog is caught.

17  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Pole Barn Bay on: April 05, 2009, 10:01:04 pm
That's a heck of a place to catch a hog. nice catch.  As far as hunting in the wind we, seem to do better when the wind is blowing like crazy. Not sure why but it has worked that way for us but our honey hole is real hilly and the wind is always blowing there.
18  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: "Quick hunt" on: April 05, 2009, 09:53:10 pm
There wont be a next time without a knife.  That was the first and last time for that.
19  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / "Quick hunt" on: April 05, 2009, 02:43:31 pm
I guess Shawn accidentally deleted the post that was just up here but here's the story on the last pig out of our 6 that we caught.
The last pig we caught was the hardest I've had to work for a hog.  Already exausted from our "quick" hunt I was having trouble getting to the bay.
We were walking back from our last pig and we heard buster baying over a monster of a hill so I told Shawn to give me his keys and I would get the truck (which was in the opposite direction from the bay but was down hill) and we sent my ab rip and Shawns bay dog rocky to the bay.
I hauled a$$ back to Shawn picked him up and went to the top of the hill. Jumped out and ran to the bay which ended up being nearly 3/4 of a mile from the truck.  Puked a few times on the way.  I kept hearing the bay dogs yelping so I knew that hog was giving them hell.  About halfway there I caught up with my ab Rip. (think he was as exhausted as me) We both drug ourselves to the bay and he ran in and caught.
At this point I know Shawn is no where around and probably isn't going to make it there so I run in leg the sow which was about 225 and pull out my kershaw pocket knife, lol, and go to thrusting it in her as hard as I could. I was pretty sure I got a lung and was worn out so I let her go.
She jumped up threw Buster off and ran to a pond nearby with the dogs in tow. I tried to get some video on my phone but in the heat of the moment forgot to save it.  The sow got on the bank and started really putting up a fight so I decided it was time to end it so I legged her again and let the water do the rest.  If there hadn't been water there I really don't know how I would have ended it. Next time I wont forget to grab my knife.
20  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: 3-28-09 on: March 30, 2009, 11:04:51 pm
Hey, all I know is that was one of the easiest most peaceful hunts. Well except for the three pigs in 15 min. Yall should have cut that jadg loose and we might have got a piglet to boot. Shawn that open field catch was awesome.  Ole, buddy nailed the s@#t out of that sow and a good thing too cause she was in the process of sizing us up when he busted through the brush.  I owe him a hot dog wiener for that.  Grin
