HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Any Ladner Currs in Texas?

Don't know of anyone specific, but I have one female that is 6 years old. She is not really my kind of dog because she don't hunt very deep. But she can rig a hog at 50MPH and durn sure get one bayed and quick. She will run a hog miles I have never had her quit probably the furthest she has went with a runner would be at least 6 miles no quit. But other than not hunting in sign she is nice and I would try another one. Also worth mentioning she don't tree and ladners are supposed to be tree dogs.

This usually means the dog has erlicula, tick fever, rocky mountain spotted fever they are all basically the same lime disease is also similar they all have the same effects the dog will eventually get to where it doesn't want to even come out of the dog house. The test only finds 35 to 40 strains and there is over 300 strains so the medication is cheaper than the test. So if your dog isn't hunting and acts lethargic just get some doxycycline pills and give at lest 2 pills a day some give 4 you can ask a vet when you get the pills you give these for 2 weeks. This will have to be done about once a year as symptoms will reoccur. The vet told me he figured half the hunting dogs in America had it.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: I'm new here but have a "finished" question.

To me a finished dog is usually 3 years old sometimes older but mainly they are as good as they will ever be. They are matured and either hunt short range, medium range, or long range or stand beside you and wait on another dog to bay. Mainly they are as good as they will ever be and that is what I mean when I say FINISHED!!

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: AT WHAT AGE SHOULD A DOG LEAVE YOU FEET AND HUNT

If a dog is going to hunt big where there is no sign he will do it in the first couple hunts after the pup learns to cross creeks and fences. I have had 3 month old puppies that would take off and not come back you go find them because they have that much hunt in them. If you just want to put the pup on hogs and expect him to stay on a track and get bayed somewhere you might have to give it 3 years and it might still not do anything. I like rangy dogs and if they don't hunt where their is no fresh hog sign in the first few hunts they are gone.

The only other way I know of is subcutaneous under the skin. I give 3-5 cc/ml penicillin and mix 1 or2 cc of b-12 in the same shot. Their is pills that are basically penicillin at the vet but in the muscle is best.

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: "SPEED", How you judge it.
|
on: September 02, 2010, 09:58:18 pm

When I talk speed I am only talking the speed at which a dog can move a track. A fast track dog is one that runs a track with his head up and off to the side of it. There are dogs that can actually run a track a mile in 2 or 3 minutes and bay a hog but they are rare I have only owned 4 of them in my life. Half my dogs are a little open so I have to have fast dogs because if a dog opens on a track he has to be able to run it at least twice as fast as a silent dog because the hog is already running because he opened his mouth.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: worming routine ?

I use panacur and strongid. Worms will become immune to strongid after a year or two. Then you use panacur the worms will not become immune to panacur, and if you use it 3 days in a row it will kill everything including tapes. After you are on panacur for a year you can go back to strongid because the worms that built up immunity died off while you were on panacur. For Strongid use 1 CC per 10 lbs. For Panacur use 2.3 CC per 10 lbs. The panacur is $140 per Liter and Strongid is $45 per Liter. For ivomec use 1/10 of a CC per 10 lbs. with a .5 CC max. This is how my vet told me to care for my dogs 7 years ago and it works.
