Is this cur out of that last litter rdjustham?

Yes sir.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't those part pit?

I am pretty sure these were the straight Curr litter.  Ryan, you just bring her to Chalonitka and I will take her off your hands lol the only way she is going to learn is woods time..putting her in a pen with a big hog is going to get her hurt and could ruin her all together IMO.
2  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Old pics....and old hog hunters........ :) on: December 29, 2012, 05:07:34 pm
Great Pictures!  I always wanted a mule and a grey one...well, I would be head over heels Smiley

There is an old dipping vat in Clewiston that was never filled in....every now and then a hog will bay up in it and it is always full nasty of water.
3  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: bob tailed dogs on: December 02, 2012, 06:58:02 am
We have both natural and bobbed tailed dogs, you can read them the same as a long tailed dog and we have never seen a balance / speed problem.  It is also quieter in the box and they are just easier to look at.

I have a yellow dog that is 'monkey tailed' and I think it is ugly as the day is long, I wish I could dock it but he is a year old....plus he is clumsy as he!! already with a tail lol
4  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Custom Vest Maker on: November 23, 2012, 12:17:33 pm
Thanks everyone, I am going to give P&P a call next week.  I have a pretty good idea of what I want, just have to drag out the measuring tape lol.

I am not in a super big hurry but our old vests that I am fond of are up there in age and since the other maker switched materials I am not a fan, he offered to warranty them but to me it isn't worth the hassle.

I am wanting the below vest just a squinch longer and the same thickness, the material holds water which helps keep our dogs cool as they know to go to the ditch to wet it but we have never had a swimming problem out of the strike vest.

And as a side note, the vest above looks like he!! but doesn't have a hole one in it which is why I like them as much as I do just the length is too short IMO.

5  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Custom Vest Maker on: November 22, 2012, 09:00:59 pm
I am interested in having two custom vests made and would like some referrals.

I know what I want thickness / style wise and I want it in a specific color, we have been Southern Cross advocates for years but their newer vests are not to my liking and the original owner doesn't want to make the 'old' style.

I asked Hog Wire if they wanted to do it and they said they do not do custom work any more nor did they know their next production run so they are out.

I am looking to have a thick made strike vest as well as your typical catch vest as well....so who do you prefer and why?

6  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: HANDLE!!!!! on: November 22, 2012, 08:22:30 pm
Well said halfbreed, handle shouldn't hinder a dogs hunt...it is so very annoying to listen to someone yell and scream at their obnoxious dogs all night long - lots of time it doesn't get them reinvited to hunt with us.  We yell and holler sometimes but most of the time it is at young puppies that are just learning.

We hunt big properties so it is nice when the dogs come back that you just tell them to load up so you never really have to stop what you are doing just to drive across the road.
7  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: HANDLE!!!!! on: November 22, 2012, 01:47:58 pm
My dogs have to know 2 things come here and shut up.  Other than that they figure out load and get ahead but have switched to a hissing noise for them to get ahead.  This works for me.  Will say I don't require much handle but they sure better learn come hear and shut up or they don't last long.

Amen!!  Shut up is an important term around us too lol.

Our dogs tend to be skittish / don't look for attention (which we like and prefer) but come here and load up are just as important.  We can whistle and they come running or shut up (depending on the pitch) and my husband makes some kind of noise to make them go ahead.

We have little puppies that load up in the pens already and dogs that get on the box (they wind) by being told to load up so there is no getting out to make them 'get in'.

Handle is a big deal but it takes time and patience plus knowing what you want.
8  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Re: florida currs? show and tell on: October 18, 2012, 06:45:17 pm
Noah, i would have to disagree with you on that. I know a lot of dayworkers who have some sure enough good dogs. Here at lykes it is just one person that is making the decision in the way dogs are used and who gets to carry dogs. The foreman on my crew actually does have some decent dogs, but they don't get to be used to their full potential when his boss isn't around.

Lykes is a funky bunch to work for any way, do they still make you ride their horses?  Used to they wouldn't even let you bring your own horse...just saddle / bridle, etc.

I know a few guys that still have some of the old rough curr dogs but they are South of the Lake in Devils Gardens...that is about the only place any more you seem to find those that love roping dick cattle more than anything else lol and their dogs will go and find them, they are nearly impossible to get a dog off of as well - you just have to catch them on a 'good day' and know them well for them even to consider it.

A few of them are even like that about their horses too.
9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: florida currs? show and tell on: October 18, 2012, 05:10:30 pm
Most of them are still pretty reclusive, I have an uncle that doesn't share dogs or talk secrets with anyone, even family lol
10  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: a few Fl hogs on: October 18, 2012, 04:25:22 pm
Our motto is 'go hard or go home' lol most people cannot or will not hang with us ... I have a hard time hanging with Allen but with age he is slowing down a little.  We were up 24+ hours before we finally passed out for a short nap just before day light when we caught the lusted hog, the pump man work us up when he cranked that old raggedy Detroit engine up  Cheesy

Cold weather is trying to come and with it comes a whole lot of sleepless nights

My Nitro dog swam the entire length of the ditch where the dog that lived was caught and the entire time I thought he was a goner...the hog just refused to go to the bank.  It worries the Heck out of me and it is really eerie when you see them just hanging out not far from where the hog was or swimming down the canal coming to a barking dog...I hate them for sure!
11  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: florida currs? show and tell on: October 17, 2012, 08:07:12 pm

The top the three dogs are brothers and a sister, they are all different in looks / size and the red ring neck dog is a son of the red gyp sitting on the box and they grey dog.

Growing up I was taught that the base of a true Florida bred dog was Blood Hound x Bull Dog and then different families added to the mix to suit their needs....my mom spoke of Ridgeback being bred in at one time for more grit.

Our dogs all have heritage in the state and are not nearly as fine boned (most of the time) as a lot of the registered yellow dogs seem to have...

12  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: a few Fl hogs on: October 17, 2012, 04:51:42 pm
I wouldn't purposely get in the water but we have roped them and drug them up the bank or snagged them with fusing poles.  Do y'all not have them out there?  If there is a puddle you are guaranteed there is something in it.

We used to swim in some really sketchy places that you couldn't talk me into getting on now...I remember as a lid swimming in a rock pit that the owner had attempted to rid of a gator but he never found him until he seen him still swimming around a few days later and we swam in that pit all weekend long.

They seem a lot more brassier these days then back when we were little...I sure wish they would open the doors to hunting them or give out ore tags.
13  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: a few Fl hogs on: October 17, 2012, 04:08:38 pm
When they are in the water it is a hustle, we have had two dogs gator caught - one was swimming a ditch but he fought back and lived but the other wad snatched off the bank at a bay and we found him a few days later.

Saturday when we caught the listed hog two gators showed up (or we noticed them) once we got the hog up the bank...they come to a barking dog and splashing water quick..it is always in the back of everyone's head lol and it is definitely something you never get used to!
14  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Lady Hoggers is getting the pants sued off em! on: October 17, 2012, 07:54:32 am
I hope everything works out for y'all. If someone takes food out of my family's mouth I would fight tooth and nail for it too, those other girls knew what they were doing and I am sure their moral compasses probably said at one point 'this is wrong' but money talks to those with questionable morals....Karma is amazing thing to watch!!

Good Luck to the Ward's!!

Good hogs a great looking dogs!
16  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: a few Fl hogs on: October 16, 2012, 04:05:13 pm
Ryan, it is an air boat.  It is definitely something different, our dogs have to be tied but the leopard dog rides and winds.  We pulled up to the island and kicked out our 'woods dogs'....they kept making loops until they jumped / bayed and then one of our rough dogs caught it....then you can just crank up and drive to them.

One part of the island is open and then the other was nasty and filled with spiders the size of my 6.5ft brother in laws hands lol with bull gators bellering at a distance...it is not for the faint of heart as the hogs donot think twice about hitting the water.

I like it but would rather do it in the cold weather for sure.
17  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: a few Fl hogs on: October 13, 2012, 09:59:23 pm
It is definitely up, we went two weeks before and were running dry ground and this time most of the island had a few inches of water...it is pretty neat how a hog can adapt to live any where, they are pretty similar to roaches  laugh

It is an air craft, I think it is a 420 or 520?? But I am not very versed in the motors lol growing up my dad had a 540 and it is smaller than that.

My brother in law owns it and it isn't a bad little boat but now my husband wants one bad.  They are just so high maintenance that I do not want to be bothered with the cost.
18  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: a few Fl hogs on: October 13, 2012, 09:30:51 pm
We put in at Uncle Joe's in Moore Haven and went to Observation, there is another place other people have been catching a boat load of hogs off of but I do not remember the name...we talked to a boy out of Clewiston said they roped 15 off a boat last week.

There are a bunch of hogs just outside of Buckhead, we used to have permission to trap on the Dike but people screwed with our traps more than it was worth so we quit.

It was nice to change it up but the spiders were so bad I do not care to go back until a good cold snap hits lol it is dang nasty....I definitely give props to those who hunt State Land all the time lol I won't lie, I am spoiled by good road hunting out of the truck.
19  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / a few Fl hogs on: October 13, 2012, 08:14:58 pm
I haven't posted in a while so figured I would share these recent hogs.

My husband and I caught this one this morning, our Chance dig winded him from about 200 yards away and had him bayed but then he broke for a steep ditch bank.  We barred him for later.

We hunted from boats last weekend and caught two good hogs off of the lake and Chance / Becky winded a stout boar hog from several hundred yards away but I left my phone in the truck due to it being just us.
The blue dog below and my husband's Lucy gyp did most of the work on these two and they were caught by a rough 10 month old Curr that is crazy good for his age....if he makes it he is going to be impressive, he just needs a tiny bit of sense.

A few shoats
