I had hard headed leapord dog that minded when he wanted too... Sometimes he'd come when called, toned or bumped. When he wouldn't come I'd turn the heat up. And he'd run and get under a trailer or truck. When he did I'd hold the heat on him until I got my hands on him and then I'd realese the heat and pet him up. After a few times of this he started minding. Now I can call him off cows with no collar. I tried this method on a bulldog but she left the country and got out of range of the tri-tronics. Lol. But she eventually came back to the house.

I didn't read all the comments, but no I don't believe a year old is too old to teach manners. I'd start from day one that you get the dog back  with consistent discipline. Just my opinion

I run plotts on bear and hog. I've never ran or tried a cougar, (well the four legged kind anyways).  I'd say typically your average cur dog probably won't have the nose for lion, I'm sure some out there would. But if you're wanting a dog for a three I'd do my homework on a good line of hounds that have the nose and trailing ability for lion, and the grit and mental toughness for bear. I've seen lion bred hounds and hounds that would eat hog but look like a sissy on a bear.

Are your dogs not honoring him when he's trailing or after its jumped ? If they aren't honoring him when he's trailing your other dogs probably can't smell it. If he's jumped and your dogs won't put in with him he may be running trash.

I doubt you could teach him to get rough.

Are you sure he's not quiting the track and back tracking his way out instead of making a loose and taking the track backwards ? I'm in no way form or fashion being a smart a$$.
