1  HOG & DOGS / VIDEOS ON HOGS / Re: running bulls breaking off the hog on: April 10, 2010, 10:26:26 am
no vests; stop showing the videos before you get one hurt. they need to lock on and stay locked on turning loose you will get dogs killed that way.

I admitt you seem to be a good dog trainer they have good handles but those dogs will get hurt and killed.
2  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: training a dog to wind. on: April 07, 2010, 09:02:13 am
Ways of training dogs vary as much as the many types of trucks people drive and why they drive them. Everyone does something different for different reasons with different breeds of dogs. One way is no better than any other unless you know for sure that way will not work in your area or with your breed of dog or your style of hunting.

Again Nickjones if you would like you can call me, we can chat.

Winding is something that can be taught it is not easy, but it can be just anything else with a dog you have to work at it and the more natural ability a dog is born with the easier it is. Again it can be taught, but just like people there are dumb dogs. Hunting loops can also be taught but that is a VERY hard thing to teach and has to start very early.

4  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Help from the Ole timers! on: April 06, 2010, 08:31:28 am
First make sure if you are doing it in Texas that you follow the laws, only boars or barrs can be released and only under hog proof fence that the State has approved. You then have to keep records of what you have released and what you kill and when, I believe these animals also have to be marked or taged as well.

I would check into all this to be sure.
5  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Un-educated hogs on: April 04, 2010, 10:48:40 am
I am to guess the "pot shots" you speak of are from me, if you want a pot shot I can sure fire some, I have not yet at this time taken any. You spoke up and started a thread, and started it from a point of view in my opion like you were the only one that knew the answer and wanted to test the rest of the world. But then when asked your self to answer your own question you seemed to not like that idea.

If you think I have some agenda against you, you think way to much of yourself, i dont know who you are nor do I care to. Besides what on earth kind of "agenda"  could I have that would matter in the least here, with this little pointless thread?
I might make you look bad? You even said you agree with some of what I said, so I cant make you look totally bad.

I mean really get over what ever is the problem and answer your own question.

And if you prove me wrong on something I dont care, I know my area and my hogs and my dogs. Cutter Bay and I never see eye to eye on anything. Never have and never will, that bothers me none in the least, he most likely feels the same about me as I do about him, and that is water off a ducks back to me.

My point is dont start a thread then back out of it when questioned, that is like turning your dogs loose at a corn field then thinking "oh that looks to thick i might get hurt if i go in there to the bay, but you leave your dogs on the ground".

Well yes i would say it is important are at least it would seem important to you or why elese would you bring it up to start with. Clearly you dont have a clue or you would post your ideas like the rest of us have right or wrong.
7  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: What do you consider to be an OUTSTANDING dog? on: April 02, 2010, 08:48:16 pm
well i am a little diff than most

-i dont want a top dog to be a "woods burner"     my true top dog i expect to be a bit slower because of age more mythodical in what he does, bit more of a thinker
-because of his age he may not hunt out quite as far but will at times depending on the area
-silent almost to the point of to silent
-will not track as he comes to them for one he has never done that because he is not cold nosed, second with age he has learned we like the bigger hogs if one is around and will most times pass on pigs and smaller stuff
-completely trash broke
-will flat eat the balls out of one to stop it
-bays until catch dogs get there then helps
-you had better catch him before you dispatch the hog if you want to stop on that hog

Outstanding dogs are those dogs that "stand out" it may be for thier personality, grit, stamina, drive................many many things.............they may not stand out because they were the best but because they were most fun to hunt with.
My top dog right now is one of the best dogs I have ever owned, raised and trained matter of fact he is prob in the top 3 after 37 yrs but he has 0 personality, he is like a wet blanket when it comes to anything besides a hog for this reason alone i wouldnt call him an outstanding dog, is he a top hog dog, yes for sure and he will be talked about by many when he is gone but to me there are others in my mind that "stand out" as  much or more
8  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: The hog doggers bill on: April 02, 2010, 08:24:09 pm
gun was a gift
ammo never use any
dogs i raise
vest and cut collars price at ugly dog (2 vests and 4 collars per hunt)
tracking system around 3k in 2 systems and 11 collars
food? for who?
hobbles for what?
knives, how many do you need? knife cheapest one you can find
gas, i always have gas that is one of the many reasons no one hunts with me

What are you looking for here dude you want to know how much it costs to start? If you have to ask, then you cant afford it. If you dont have it you dont need it.

Really what ya looking for here that might help with the answers people give, doing a paper, report or something?
9  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Almost a year ago, I said this would happen...... on: April 02, 2010, 08:14:43 pm
then the link i got must be wrong it is showing dates like 07 and 06

10  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: ? about Line Breeding on: April 02, 2010, 05:34:45 pm
My father - daughter  breedings have worked great with pups that hit the ground working at very young ages with no problems. But this is with dogs that have not been line nor inbred to death.
I then breed one of those pups back to an outcross (if things or to tight) or an uncle or aunt depending on what I want.
11  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Almost a year ago, I said this would happen...... on: April 02, 2010, 05:27:37 pm
First that thread was started in like 07

second the guy got in trouble for hunting state land

Really that has nothing to do with a hog being or not being exotic livestock

12  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Call a game warden before you hunt? on: April 02, 2010, 05:18:50 pm
I didnt even know who the game warden was in my area until i donated a hunt to them last year and that is after hunting the same area for 37 years. In 37 years of doggin i have never been stoped or asked a question on a hunt by anyone from law enforcement. I was even sittin the side of the hwy one night with 8 dogs waiting on a ride when a deputy drove by, all he did was turn his lights on dim and speed up. Clearly he didnt want to do the paper work on what ever he thought he didnt want to see there on the side of the road.

So no I never call, i did ask him and he did say if i needed his help to get dogs back to call him but so for i have not had to do that.

14  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Un-educated hogs on: March 31, 2010, 08:56:31 am
First it was surrounded by open land, they didnt want to head into open land, that doesnt sound like hogs that dont know what dogs are, they knew to rally and fight just because a hog doesnt run does not mean they dont know what a dog is. Most times the most dogged hog will bay the best because they have no fear, they know they can fight and win/kill.

Second someone was right thier bellies were full.......didnt feel like running.

Third you gave it some thought and did things right and just didnt bust in you took the time to check the wind and use the wind, you were on them before they knew you were coming.

The hardest runner in some cases is the least dogged hog (i have seen it to many times, they are scared to death and dont know they can fight or what to do but run), there is no way to say the easy catch is the hog that was never dogged.
15  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Shooting dogs! on: March 30, 2010, 03:08:59 pm
No! A person does not have the right to kill a dog that is pursuing wildlife; however, a landowner may attempt to prosecute the owner of the dog(s) for hunting a wildlife resource without landowner consent. The local game warden, when called upon, will assist the landowner with investigating this type of illegal activity.
[/quote]

This is not entirely correct either, for one wild hogs are not a considered a "wildlife resource" and unless the land owner can prove he has made every effort to control the range of the hogs including hog proof fencing to keep them on his property and marking them he can not bring charges against you for your dogs running or killing one. What the land owner can do, in Texas (or at least the way I understand it) I can be filed on for tresspassing if my dog crosses over a property line even if I dont set foot on that property. This is the only criminal charge that can be filed on any hunter as long as he/she is abiding by all other laws.

The only law that allows for shooting a dog is when livestock or a person is in danger, wildlife and or exotic livestock are not listed in that law, granted your dog is after a $10k exotic and your dog gets shot I wouldnt try to fight it.
16  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Un-educated hogs on: March 30, 2010, 02:19:18 pm
Do you understand why? There is one thing that jumps out to me that has nothing to do with the hogs never being dogged.
17  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: HHA group (Hog Hunters Anonymous) on: March 29, 2010, 12:45:45 pm
My family read this and does not understand what yall's problems are. My wife and 5 kids all agree that the only problem here is that there are actually people that dont hunt.

HHA?Huh? WHY WHY WHY???

It should be a group for those that dont understand or somethiing like Hog Hunters Misunderstood.

I will say if you have 20 dogs you do have a problem and hog hunting isn't it, learn to say NO.
18  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: can some body help on: March 27, 2010, 08:22:55 am
Keep your money in your pocket, your dogs at home, sit on the bench and watch.

Sorry those are my rules for when I go to one.
19  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Frustrated on: March 27, 2010, 08:21:58 am
The limb and scoulding isnt going to help much either, she will think she got scoulded for coming back to you not leaving the hog so you end up with a dog you cant catch, you can put a lot of work into a dog like this and end up with nothing or maybe at best end up with a dog that about half the time will do something you will be proud of, one in something like 200 that start out this way actually end up making an almost decent dog.
Your best bet is one of two things, find what the dog likes to do and only use her for that. In this case it sounds like she is only in it for the chase, which means you need something to strike and stop for her OR just plain get rid of her and find something better. That is what I would do, move on cut your lose at this point. Find something with more talent to put your efforts into.
20  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: Self Proclaimers on: March 24, 2010, 02:56:59 pm
That is why I hunt alone, that way I dont have to prove to anyone every time it is my dog/dogs that do all the work.

No really sometimes a good pissing contest is needed, it will shut them up or send them home either way what have you lost.

Put up or shut up is what I would tell em.
