HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: hog traps- the stationary killers

maybe its because we have alot more hogs that my dogs are not out out of sight without reason for too long. if i go for a walk and my dogs are gone for more than say 5 mins well i know its gonna be on very shortly. i do a bit of work from the rig too so the dogs dont leave the vehicle unless its for a hog. i wasnt having a chop at you either mate, just curious about how this unfortunate incident could have taken place. happy hunting.

myself and a few mates have got together and formed the "australian catahoula cur association" we will be looking to preserve and promote hard working cats mongst aussie hunters.
ive had them for a few years now and im impressed by them. the last thing we need is to let the showies get hold of our hunting dogs and destroy them like thet have so many other good breeds of dog.

this is an F1 cross ive often thought about and would love to try. we used labs as bomb dogs for years and the dogs we used i reckon would have made cracker hoddogs given the chance.

very nice set up! when you hunt your dogs from the rig do you wait for them to bark then you stop and turn them loose? also when you are travelling what sort of speeds are you sitting on? why do hunters in the US seem to not use a flat bed? i know some do but many use a pick up style, id be too scared to get it scratched lol

i much prefer to fly solo, if i had to take someone i like to take one of my kids but they are still a little bit young at the monent, my rule of thumb for them is as long as they can quickly get up a tree if needed they can come.
the only downside i have found is having no one there to take a pic for me, i try to balance the camera on the 4 wheeler but a dog will jump up and knock it over before the shot 9 times out of ten (ive got alot of pic of grass lol).

thanks guys, im very happy with him so far. he still has alot of maturing to do and still acts like a bit of a goose around home but switches once we get out into the woods. watching him starting to work out rig hunting has been rewarding also. im lucky this little apprentice has a couple of good teachers to learn from. the catch dog in that clip works from the rig better than most dogs i have seen and is known to go a few mile on a good whiff.
peachcreek, he is from a kennel over here called "Crazy Acres" his sire was basically a campawhile dog and his dam was an import from diamond w.
chainrated, thanks mate. i really like the black and tans too. there are a number of us over here that are really impressed with what the cats offer as hunting dogs.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / my young cat, mixing it up

He is now a couple of days off being eleven months old and has been on 20 or so pigs 3 of those he pulled up on his own.Normally a dog of mine would have seen alot more pigs by this age but the wet weather has really slowed things up. He is improving with every trip. He is a smidgen over 23" and about 51lb. Hank pulled up his own out of a mob this morning. it was no monster but i was happy with his effort. My mates dog came in and sealed the deal before i got a chance for a shot with the .22

sounds like you have a good plan and that you are really putting some thought in. If i were you and you had the resources i would try the following, 1.go out to the woods like you have been doing 2. take that hog you have been using then put a good set of hobbles on it and turn it loose in front of your dogs 3. keep your dogs restrained (for now) but in view of the hog and let it dissapear out of view. if your dogs have the minerals to do the job they will probably be going mental about now 4.now turn the dogs loose, by letting the hog go out of view they will automatically start to use their noses and just build from there. you are definately on the right track but just a couple of steps ahead. ill look forward to hearing how you get on.
