Cheers.here's another "rare" shot We just sat back & quietly watched while we waited for the dogs to pin point his scent trail....One of those rare occasions where you get to see it all pan out from the jump a few hundred mtrs back, we then just rode slowly waiting for the dogs to work the scent & hit up. We spotted him sleeping before the dogs located him....Was great watching them slowly edge closer until hit up!

Went to one of my blocks to check out some more country i hadn't hunted yet. Got the word from the manager that a few poachers have been in a few spots. So trails cams got loaded & set whilst out there! Was a good few hours hunting. Bagged 10 or so good quality boars. Nothing under 80+kg live weight. Got a few smaller sows which was late in the hunt, so the pups finally got a look at a few on the ground also... Wyatt also lost his "Pig Sticking Virginity" My son Wyatt with Piglet Me, Wyatt and one of my pups with a boar. Bryce going in to grab the bailed boar   Bryce, Wyatt & Boar Boar trying to drown the dogs Busta being thrown out for the second time Muzzle flash

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Took a couple of Interstate customers out for a trip

Well a month ago I got a phone call from one of my regular customers. "Mick it's Carla, Whoppas (Damien) b'day coming up, thought I might fly us up for a hunt & bring one of the dogs if OK?" No probs I replied & the flight itinerary arrived on my pc with hours I picked 'em up Friday night & we hit the road 4am Saturday. Within the first 1 hour we'd managed to bag half a dozen & they were rapt. With them only being average I was happy for 'em but not overly excited...So, i started copping some crap from the visitors suggesting i'm mad & a pig's a pig etc etc..... So, the rest of the morning & that arvo hunt I let em catch some more 30-60kg boars The next morning we rose at 5 and I decided "good boars" was the order for the morning before we head home. SO, I told them we have a fair ride & not much will happen for a while unless the dogs pick up scent of a traveling boar... We pulled to check a water hole on the way & give the dogs possibly there last drink before "hopefully" hitting a few lone boars......I called the dogs back up on the bike but OPAL would not return...I said to the visitors "She only refuses to come if it's a CERTAIN pig about to found! I could see em thining "yeah right mate" :jack: I called her again but before i could call again the "OPAL Yap" cried out! She, true to form outdid all dogs on the ground and found a boar hiding under some roots in a dry creek bed about 200mtrs from us....So we finished his day & went back to the game plan & headed into the dry country! We ended up with another 4 good boars then headed home......... Visitors Damian, Carla & Outback's Bolt on my quad heading out Opals Dry Creek Boar Busta pulled this one out of a mob & held him one out Opal reminding this fella whos boss Damian, Bolt & Boar Damian & Boar Cooling off

The ute is 2004 Toyota Hilux. Rear tray is set up into one large cage at the front of the tray with the two side doors removable for winding on the station/ranch tracks. The rear part of the ute is two half size cages...One that houses my car fridge to keep the beers cold & the other cage is for young or injured dogs. The Quad is a Can-Am Outlander 650max & the UTV is a Can-am Commander X 1000cc for getting off the tracks & through the swamps

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: TxMason's HOPE arrives to her new home in OZ
|
on: September 05, 2011, 03:15:32 am

Tx Mason's Hope is finally getting a chance to run free & settle into the pack now. Training & her being settled has been a bit delayed due to the fact she has been on heat since she got here So not only did the second "NEW" arrival in a month stir up the kennels a tad her being on heat just added to the "TENSION" around the yard So i've just stood back & let things ride a tad...... She did get a ride with us on Sunday morning. I went out to shoot a bit of dog meat for the freezer. Took a few hounds "in case" a few hogs were to be found The dogs jumped from the ute within 2 minutes of arriving & bailed a boar about 800mts in. Waiting on an ankle re-co I thought this would be a nice opportunity to "slooooowly" walk Hope in for an intro into bailing boars in Oz (of course, i couldn't drive in because it was over the fence in the next paddock !) I took my time paying attention to her reaction to wallabies & other new smells.... She didn't care, she was just nose down, head up(to noise) then nose down & head up again in the direction of the noise going on up ahead... Pulling like a steam train.......Once we got there she wasn't so eager lol.. But after a minute or so settled & had a few good meaningful barks. The next one i let her out of the cage once the others had hit up, with the third she was let jump & follow the others on the scent trail... Will still being distant, she was barking with intent & gave me enough to smile about for now! The next 3 boars she was made to observe or listen to from the ute! A bit more one on one time with her over the next few weeks & she'll be inserted in a pack fulltime Hope being led into her first "Bay" in Oz! Hope getting a bit more intent

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: how you cull
|
on: September 01, 2011, 05:13:13 pm
|
I believe we as the people and/or breeders who put these pups on the ground are obliged to get them every opportunity we can to make the grade.... We all have different expectations from a dog so opinions & cull suitability will vary... I personally do it a few different ways.... I only breed for myself if I am trying to improve or add/remove a trait (good or bad) from one of my lines. If i'm using dogs that have matured & I know them like the back of my hand, I will wait until I have 4 or 5 suitable customers on my waiting/pick list with deposits down. I will then breed and let the gyp raise the pups unaccompanied by me (except the usual wormings, weight checks & microchipping) until 7 weeks. I will obviously observe (at every opportunity) the gyp & pups interacting, teaching & learning & trying to pick the pups that are close to the parents traits with the added or removed trait that i desire (if possible at that age), then spend a few days with some basic obedience which is only the "here" command. I then make my decision on 4 or 5 pups. The others are moved on to customers.....The remainding 4 or 5 are kept until 12 weeks, decide on 2 & give the other few to hunting buddies ( i still own the dogs). The ones my mates get are there for my kennels use if I require. This way I actually have access to 20-30 dogs (3 or 4 different lines) but only have 12 in my yard. ALL pups that are sold to customers have an "18mth Hunting/Working" Guarantee! This allows a risk free investment to customer & assures me, I will ALWAYS here of any faults that my lines are producing.. If I'm breeding an unknown or new line I will keep ALL pups on hand and/or give a few to some close trusted friends that HUNT on a regular basis & are competent dog people.. This is what will happen with my new import TX Mason's Hope's first litter.... I rarely cull prior to 12 mths. But I believe there are a few traits that must show up before then....ie - natural drive. Overly timid dogs will go before then! Good thread

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Raising a catahoula

Yeah, works on most! I have used a similar method when required but with two bicycle wheels mounted to stakes. Seperate each wheel around 10metres apart with a rope looped around the wheels & joined. Tie a clip to the bottom rope run & you can do both - cast the the dog away (i say "GO") by grabbing the rope or wheel and send/spin it away.....Do the opposite for "HERE"..... I'll see if i have a picture of the set up

Hard one to answer for sure when all scenarios, traits & rearing techniques are only 100% known by you. Also depends on if you have or are willing to put the time & money in with the possible end result being the same anyway. I have had two dogs (both female) in my packs that have been similar. Yes, they were tightly bred so an out cross has been made to try eliminate that trait that appears 1 in 20 times from this gyp. -The first timid one (still hasn't relaxed) hunted real well but was sometimes difficult to get back on the ute or bike because of timidness (would cower at a raised voice).... She was recently speyed & given to a family friend as a guard/family pet on a small farm. She is already doing fantastic & has settled well. She is 2.5yrs old. - The second one was 12months old last week. She was also culled last week. She was bred as a future replacement for one of my older gyps. Initially i thought i got it right with my plans. ie - Bred to be taller, slightly deeper in the chest but keeping the same natural prey drive resulting in a fantastic work ethic....Well, she was timid from about 8weeks old which i thought i could get past. I was careful not to reprimand her whilst young beside the normal scruff of the neck shake. She was very loyal & quite aggressive towards other dogs in the yard. Unfortunately, when she decided not to come when doing the wrong thing she would lay and cower in the paddock for hours, she would find a hog no probs but as soon as another dog arrived she would leave it & if she saw me arrive with the rifle she would dissapear a hundred yards away..... She wasn't showing any signs of improvement with one on one work or pack work....She bacame a CULL
