I run radio and a guy I hunt with runs the garmin and he always has problems with losing signal on his dogs. More than once we have relied on my collars because his weren't working. When the garmin works it is great though!

I have wildlife collars, but once the batteries start going low it can be hard to tell distance.
Yeah, I probably need to get them replaced. I think I've got my money's worth!

It may be the terrain if it is real hilly? I've noticed that on mine before... but i'd say after 5 years, send them in and have them checked.
Not really.. It's fairly flat everywhere here. I think I am gonna just send in one collar at a time and get them fixed so I still have the others to use while it's getting fixed..

I've never personally cut a hogs ears off but I do mark their ear when I cut them and let them loose. I've caught a couple without any ears or tails too.. Not usually fun. The last one I caught with my dogo/pit had no ears or tail and was around 275 easily. If not for that dog I would have had some dead dogs or never caught the hog. He cut my bmc pretty badly and he quit trying to catch.. Gotta love a big catch dog every once in a while!

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / QuickTrack question
|
on: March 02, 2010, 08:25:59 pm

I have had a QuickTrack system the last 5 years now.. When I first got it I used it at least twice a week then didn't use it much for a while when I was working out of town. Now I've been using it about once every week or two for the last year. I know they say the batteries are supposed to last about 8 years in them but I think I may need to send them in to get replaced. I've been noticing lately that when I track my dogs I get a strong signal at times and weaker at others. I used to be able to tell how far my dogs were, if they were moving, and so on.. Have any of you ran your batteries on your collars low enough to notice any problems like this? Or am I just rusty with my tracker? I've also been hunting different places than I am used to so the terrain is a little different. Any input would be much appreciated!

Sometimes there isn't a lot you can do, some dogs are bad about catching legs and hams. You don't want to make it uncertain about catching but you want it to know it's not good to catch there. Are you training him in a pen? Sometimes a little bit bigger hog can defend its hindquarters a little better and will teach your dog if it does catch there it can still be hurt. I know some people that have had to get rid of dogs because they always wanted to chew the hams and would ruin a good eating hog.

I would probably just use that property for trapping and not even bring any dogs there. I know in Florida hogs are considered livestock so he has a right to protect them and can shoot your dogs if he wishes, I imagine it's the same in Texas. I had a problem like that before where we had some property and a man owned a tiny piece right next to it and threatened me not to have my dogs on it and called the game warden a couple times but as long as I didn't step foot on it myself I was not at fault. So I just hunted my property at night or during the weeks I knew the man wasn't in town. There isn't a whole lot you can do in that case other than try to keep your dogs off his property. Like I said, I would just set up some hog traps and move the hogs you trap to another spot you hunt.

10-4, I'm going to be moving back up to Trenton/Bell area in the fall
Oh yeah? That's not too far off.. I did some hunting up by Old Town at Mallory Swamp when it was open.. Did alright but management areas get hunted hard when they're open.

Squeeler, From one Fl boy to another some of the stuff your gonna see on this forum will make you cry . Seems like guys are always getting ofers to hunt with others and new places :'(. Dont know how it is in you part of the state but im hurtin, and seems like they pull big toothy hogs all the time :'(.. Yeah, it's rough around here some times. I have a few places I go on friend's properties that are decent but I'm always trying to find new places to go. The management areas aren't usually worth the drive.. I grew up hunting on a bunch of ranches in Okeechobee but getting good places to hunt is becoming harder every day since there are so many people into hog hunting now!

Glad to see you here. you guys in Florida hunt about the same type of country we do here on the coast of Texas.
I've been wanting to set up a trip to Texas to go hunting! Most of the places I hunt are heavily wooded and wet.. Not always a blast catching nasty ones in a swamp but ya can't beat when they're in the palmettos!

I was told to join here from a friend of mine in Texas! I am located in Central Florida but grew up hunting in South Florida. I've been hog hunting all my life basically and it's about the only type of hunting I do. I'm sure it's different in Texas but finding places to hunt is getting rare in Florida.. With all the developing going on it gets rough. I look forward to sharing stories, pictures, and conversing with you all!
My dogs: Plott hound - My main trail/strike dog. Very rough, will stop and try any size hog and catch <100lb hogs alone. Redbone/plott gyp - Looks straight redbone. Daughter of my plott, coldest nose of my pack. Blackmouth cur - My oldest dog, about 7-8 years old. Still in good hunting shape. Rough at times but easy to handle. Blackmouth cur - My newest addition, 10.5 months old now. Already bigger than the rest of my dogs. Still learning the ropes but seems to enjoy going and sticks with my older BMC so he should turn out alright.
Had a Dogo/Pit for catch power but had to put him down a little while back.. Haven't found a new catch dog yet but I would like to get a puppy soon!
