HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Interpretation.

Ok, Ryan, you just touched on what I was just meaning. People often act like rough dogs stop em where they strike em and they don't have many runners.
Or... They get em stopped sure, but I don't wanna be stitching dogs all the time...
These are the attitudes I hear alot from either young folks, or people here on the net.
When it comes to the belief some folks have "we have rough dogs and we don't have many runners!" maybe, your rough dogs just; A. Struck a group of hogs and cuaght whichever was the closest/ the one who didn't run quickly B. Dont have enough bottom to even make you realize they are getting on runners and just letting them run off without putting in any effort. C. You hunt spots with large populations of hogs and the ol "blind squirrel finds a nut" theory applies.
There's a group of hunters Ive gotten to go with recently who have fairly gritty-rough dogs in my opinion BUT their dogs are the real freaking deal and they can hang for miles upon miles with running hogs! What I'm getting at is dogs like those can do everything that some folks say they want in short ranged rough dogs, PLUS they can Hual ass, stick to runners, go super deep to find sign and basically everything you'd want.
TShelly describes various dogs as peewee, little league, high school, college, minors and major leaguers and I think that's the most accurate way it can be described.
When you get to hunt with minor an major league hog dogs, it becomes clear that rough loose, open silent, long range, close hunting don't make a freaking difference in the world, a bad ass is a recognizable bad ass and will make everything else around look silly no matter what his lil traits.

Another thing why is everyone keep talking about and preaching that these barrs are sooooo good to eat is why we do it?? I call BS on that, we catch and release for a sport bottom line... DOn't try to fool me, ive been catching and releasing for years but didn't start barring till this year... Didn't ever see the point till i started enentering these hunts last year. I catch and do guided hunts more ofter than most and I'm not an enternet hog dogger... I don't understand everyone for bars speaking of the taste... Get you a 100 pound sow and throw her on the smoker or in a hole.. We are doing it for the money and the sport..
Good luck to everyone this season cause my protien feed BOARS are going to break the scale!
Have you ever eaten Barr hog? It is hands down my favorite wild game meat to eat! We've been cutting barrs long before these tournaments and not for sport either. I was raised to eat what I kill and I am not going to eat a boar hog. So, I cut them hoping to catch them at a later date when they will make a great meal!

Not trying to stir anything up, just a few things caught my attention. A couple post said, how is it fair to go hunting and chase a Barr all night and get dogs cut up if a Barr is not excepted. Here's my thought, I've never caught a Barr simply because we don't cut and turn loose so I can't be upset by that rule, however I can be upset when I hunt hard just like everyone else and my dogs get cut on a BOAR that hasn't been caught before then get beat by BARRS when the rules say no previous caught hogs. I don't consider it to be cheating cutting hogs then wait til they get big then hunt them again, but it's an advantage. Barrs will get bigger faster than boars and tend not to roam like a dominant boar. So placing BARRS in an area to make a big honey hole just isn't true hunting in my book. It may be a tradition or an advantage to others but this year the rules simply say no BARRS it's clearly laid out. This is a hunting competition which means go out, catch hogs, enjoy the woods and your dogs. Do your best to follow all rules and the main thing is have fun. Just cause it's a competition doesn't mean go find a way to bend the rules. In my mind I don't care if I win or not, it means more to me to catch hogs with my dogs that I know hasn't been caught before, then going out to a spot already knowing what's there. It's a rule this year so deal with it, if all your spot consist of just BARRS and you feel like you have no chance to catch a boar then it's pretty simple. Don't enter this competition, there's no sense creating a problem, the rule is what it is this year. Good luck to all, hope everybody has good hunting and most importantly stays safe.
So barrs tend to not roam like a dominant boar? You know this to be fact? Because I can tell you its 100% false! I'll give you two examples. Earlier this year we were hunting a property and caught a barr. It was not a barr I had cut but i did recognize the ear mark. I called the guy who had cut him and he said the closest he had cut one from that property was around 7 miles away. Second example, this deer season we have 3 game cams up on a property that i live next to. We have 3 different BOARS all over 200# coming to the same feeders like clock work. On this same property I have cut well over 20 barrs in the last year. Guess how many we have caught or even seen on camera....0!! We are not complaining about the new rule because our places only have barrs or because we have been stock piling barrs on one property just for tournament sake. We are complaining because you never know where you are going to catch a barr and it would be a shame to waste even 5 minutes catching a barr when you cannot count it. Another point I would like to make is, I believe the rule of no "previously caught" hogs is refering to hogs caught prior to tournament hours and holding them until tournement weigh in. Not hogs released back into the wild and caught at a much later date.

I think the fix to the problem is to make sure the right questions are ask on the polygraph test. No rule change.

The fuss as I see it is that some folks may bar every boar for a year or two and turn them loose in a remote area that only the really have access to and there is plenty of country for them to hunt. Then when tournament time comes they use this place as a "Honey Hole" and therefore have a herd of hogs that have nothing on their mind but to eat and get big. They dont compete for territory, breeding, or range as far unless otherwise pressed as a boar hog would. therefore giving that team an equivalent of a stocked pond instead of an open public lake to hunt fo the torunament.
If it were only that easy!

I think I spelled it out pretty cut and dry. Once they have been altered then they are not a truly wild animal anymore. Their behavior changes to reflect that of a more domesticated animal, like steers. Therefore you are gathering livestock not hunting technically speaking, but that is only my opinion and I certainly do not want great dog men and hunters to not enter a competition that benefits everyone because of the rule of "No Barr Hogs" especially since it is a legal practice. Now here in Louisiana I am going to push for only 1 barr per 5 hogs to be allowed if any for hunting comps because it is illegal and unethical here to do so and we certainly don't want to end up with the hog problems Texas has!;)
I'm not questioning what your opinion is, you have made it clear what you think. I couldn't disagree more but that arument is for another discussion. You stated that you thought the tournaments were put on to "help control the hog population" by turning in barrs would we not be accomplishing this? Also, we would be participating in the competition and therefore helping raise money for great causes. and lastly we would be removing these wild hogs with dogs so would we not be promoting hunting with dogs?

If that doesn't make sense then please explain to me the purpose of a hog hunt? Because I am under the impression that it is put on in part to help control the hog population ( reduce the damage they cause) raise monies for great causes, and promote hunting with dogs. Or is it a Livestock Show like the fair ?
Please explain to me how having barrs in the stringer doesn't accomplish this?

Sure was sorry to get the text this morning saying he didn't make it. Blaster was one of the hardest hunting cur dog I have ever had the privileged to hunt behind. He was a dog that when you turned him loose he would hit the ground running and if there was a hog around you better get the tie rope ready. Sure sorry for your loss Eric he was great one! And like Tony said he was as good of a producer as he was a hog dog!

By any definition of the word, a Barr hog is a "Pre-caught hog". Tournaments that do not allow barrs are conducted on a basis of straight-up competition.
So barrs don't count because they are "pre-caught"? What if someone turns in a boar hog or a sow with a notched ear? Will they count?

I have only saved one pup from parvo. I had parvo at my old house real bad and lost 2 whole litters to it. I always heard to give them pedialite and Gatorade to keep hydrated, it never worked. This year I had a pup get it and I took him to a new vet. That vet told me the worst thing to do was to put fluids into there stomach. Instead he gave me a saline solution and told me to give him 200 units twice a day under the skin and don't feed or water him for 4 days. I did this and after 4 days the pup was back to normal. Total cost was somewhere around $130.

About the only thing to learn from y'all is how to talk s%#€ cause God knows y'all talk plenty of it! I had one heck of a time this weekend. It was definitely the most wore out I've been after a hog hunt but was well worth it! And I would also like to thank the lswda for making things right and I hope y'all are running things again next year.
