What you tried worked so dont doubt yourself. When this heatwave lays you can put the hound right back in the mix. Those curs are not stupid, they know that the hounds dont operate the way they want to when it is this hot.

ZackW, how does this gyp react to being cut? If she acts like it really hurts she will modify her style over time. If you can tell she really doesnt feel the pain, like a full blood pit, then you may be in for a bumpy ride. At any rate a baydog vest really wouldnt be a bad idea. Just my 2 cents.

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: whats the best way to cattle break a dog
|

I like to e-collar stock break my dogs. I send a newby out around cattle, or whatever I want to break for, and never say a word to the dog. I may not even get out of the truck. My reason for this is that I want the dog to treat that stock the same no matter where I am. If I am across the ranch from the dog I dont want that dog to get the idea that this is a good time to chase something. I gave a dog back to a buddy one time that I had broke the old fasioned way. Told him he did not have to worry about that dog ever chasing stock brcause he was totally broke, which he was for me. After an episode of cow chasing and mag-light therapy the dog was stock broke for him too. Dogs get bright ideas just like people do!

I have heard of pit/GSHPointer. Once had a guy tell me that his family used pure breed labradors as CATCH dogs. I had to have him repeat that one to me!

There are really good dogos out there and there are really bad dogos out there. Even when the brood stock will not hunt, some of the pups will make hunters and vise versa. It is a young breed and it does have its problems, I hate the white coat, but watching two male dogos totaly control a hog that would carry away a couple of pits can make almost anyone a believer. You just have to understand that there are good lines out there.

HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Re: So let's get real about Dogos...

Some things I heard and read:
Dogos were bred for an all purpose hunting dog.
Dogos catch wherever and sometimes chew up a hog.
Dogos arent tested as hard b/c traditionally they were bred to run and catch in packs so each dog gets pressured less when on a rough hog.
Dogos are slow to mature and the breed are far and few btx when it comes to finding working quality dogs.
Dogos are not tested to the standards that the founders intended b/c they are not used the same way in this country.
Any thoughts?
None of the above true for the breed as I have seen.

I have owned dogos for seven years and have hunted around them for ten. I have seen the progression of many dogs and I have noticed that they learn to PLAN their catch. I have seen dogos one on one with large boars outside of pens and equaled or beaten by the boar. A quality dogo will not walk away from a boar but they will rethink thier aproach on a boar when being whipped. They are not superman and they cannot walk on water but they are as good as you can get for hog stopping machines.

Canex is gets everything including tapes. After the dogs are clean they say give it every 3 months. They are big pills so I mash them up in a pill masher and mix them in a can of food. I give Ivomec the other months for heart worms. That's about the cheapest combination that I've found that sure enough keeps the dogs slick. Derek
Where do you get this Canex I like the sound of it. What animal is it intended for?
