I could probably find a picture of the fella in the brush jacket with both hands in his pockets, standing the same way...maybe not over looking the same quarry, but maybe a showsteer or BBQ pit...photo would be a little older too...good times

Not familiar with this type of hunting, but I have a Jack Russell(Jack) and had a 1/2 Jack 1/2 Jagd(Dottie) and both seem very good at pissing the yotes where I live off and bringing them to the house. One evening after dark we pulled up to the house and Dottie was baying about 75 yrds out, I retrieved a light and went to investigate and she was figure eighting TWO yotes. Would think they would work, just a little hard headed, so da** aggressive. Believe it or not Dottie pissed off a rattlesnake til she got it treed and the neighbor went to investigate and shot it. Straight terrier may not have sense to bring them back, or get too deep into it and get overcome, it is what got Dottie.

Only hunted the Refugio contest with my son one year, he has since hunted it a couple more times...I take it as an opportunity to meet and mingle with other hog hunters...it seemed difficult to get some to visit, like you were trying to pull teeth or squeeze blood from a turnip...maybe someone should have called someone else about dates of contests, but if not it is what it is...just best not to turn it into a bunch of drama about who should support who...unless I had a place between me and either contest I would hunt neither because I'm not going to hunt here to haul my hogs there, that is me...I think TDHA is after good things for those who run dogs and if it fits your schedule and you can go that is great, if not do what you can to support, just don't think bashing one another is going to accomplish much....js

Well, I'm not sure about getting a refund on a dead dog that caught but if your dog from David Thoms doesn't turn out it is refunded pending the dog is in good health. There are plenty of folks that hunt and catch hogs with his dogs, others that shoot over them, just depends on how you want to hunt. If you don't want to pay the $$$ then you need to look elsewhere, he never seems to have an abundance to try to get rid of...just saying...also remember his dogs are working dogs(cattle or hogs) some turn on to one or the other(occasionally a deer dog-tracking), some turn on to both requiring a little work...I know someone that bought one that wouldn't look at a hog, but Mr. Thoms made it right best of my knowledge....don't know Mr. Wright...just a little info...if you are looking for a certain way a foundation dog hunts might be better off finding a finished dogs and paying the Big Money and get what you are looking for...

What they hunt with and just sure luck as to one being open or silent. Had a litter of 4 half mt cur and half red bone, one of the 4 was open. Don't hunt hounds but this dog gave mouth on the move, but had enough bottom that he would get'm stopped eventually. Didn't hunt open dogs and sold him for $300 to an individual that liked open dogs in big country in south texas, he called back wanting more. Some luck, just a chance you take crossing with hound, I would think quarter would help getting silent.

No idea, my son has a female lacy and for two spring/summers in a row she starts off like she has the mange. Looks terrible and then gets a real pretty coat of hair again. Recently my son bred her to his best strike dog and she had five pups 2 leopard(steel gray) and 3 solid steel gray(lacy colored), after the pups got weaned the solid colored pups lost their hair much like there mom does every year. Is red mange the one that is hereditary? Just thinking that might be it.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: down side to helicopter hunters

They have been shooting wild hogs out of helicopters for years down here in South Texas. The King Ranch for instance does it because they also farm within the confines of the ranch and they make an attempt at holding down the population. At one time, the folks leasing the ranch land there had a quota of wild hogs to kill annually, if it was met they didn't fly your pasture, if it wasn't met they flew and shot the hogs. Some of the ranches down here have picked them up and used them to feed the hungry. There are YOUTUBE videos of some, nueceshelicopterhunts???, this guy is quite the marksman. At one point he drops 8-9 hogs with 9-10 rounds of ammo. I think there is a place for it, just not commercially selling helicopter hunts, and picking up what u can to feed the hungry.

Is there a vest that is as protective as "wet felt", beleive the one my son uses came from Jim Crainer many years ago and is in bad shape. Would like to find him another but want one that will work the same way. He has caught some good toothy boars and you can see the boar banging against him and no cuts with the "wet felt". In the thread about "show your best catch dog???" there is a dog Reign(sp) looks like he has a "wet felt" vest on, looks very similar to my sons.

Pretty dumb on the part of someone hunting other peoples property from a helicopter, must not have ever seen one shot down, makes a mess of the helicopter and passengers. I see some of you are refering to the hogs as "livestock", if that is the case and they are "livestock" there should be some angry farmers that border ranches. The "livestock" live in the confines of the ranch "protected" from hunters and destroy corn and grain crops that belong to farmers. If that is the case and they are "livestock" farmers are going to catch on and start going after neighboring ranchers for damages from the so called "livestock" destroying their crops. If the rancher is going to protect them from hunters then they should be responsible for them leaving their ranches and destroying the grain crops. Sorry to change the subject a bit, the "livestock" comment got my attention. Back to Helicopter hunting, bad if happening across the fence!

Has anyone tried the right boer boel, they have different conformation like all the bully breeds. These dogs are from south africa and some can really get up and move and for long periods of time. The ones that are currently in the US may be bred more for looks than performance, when they where first being brought here Mr. Hines(american bulldog man) went over to see them for himself. I saw video of what he saw and they were awsome over there. Just offering another avenue, might be a little pricy to get started.

Sounds like cajunjag's 12 yr old hit it on the head, both warden and poachers looked stupid on that show. The wardens seemed to be a little antaginistic(spell??), that show didn't do alot for anyone, not impressed at all by that episode.
