Mine is 8X12 and split down the middle by panel to make 2 6X8, with a recessed 3X4 whelping box in the corner. The divider panel has a hole cut in it so that the gyp can get away from them when its time to ween. I also have a fold down gate over the hole so that I can segregate the gyp from the pups, otherwise she might eat all of their food too.
Mine is a foot or so off the ground, and wood floored, which helps with bugs and stuff, but you might want to put carpet or something soft in the box after the pups are born. For what ever reason, I have a terrible problem with hotspots when a nursing momma is on wood floor.

Jimmy,
I knew Tom. And I even met you once many moons ago. He and I didn't see eye to eye all of the time. As you know, he wasn't a fan of line breeding Lacy's. But no doubt, he was a Lacy man through and through! He and I spent many hours talking dogs and occasionally hunting together in my early days. I also knew of his condition, often wondered of his health, and was real sorry to hear of his passing.

THD (Jimmy? ) is spot on. You can look back probably pushing 10 years on this site, and see that I was at one time the #1 proponent of Lacy dogs. But take the following for what it is worth.
My previous hunting partner and I bred and hunted Lacy dogs exclusively for 6 or 7 years. In that time, we caught literally a couple thousand hogs. But we also went through over a hundred Lacy dogs. At one time, we had 40 between us. In summery, we found that...
The GOOD 1) Size, Stamina and agility. They can go all day long, and you would be surprised at the punch a little dog can pack. 2) SMART! As THD said, you aint going to get one over on them. And neither is a hog. 3) Tenacity and Tact. Believe it or not, it was like they could read a pigs mind. We never had runners, it was like the dogs knew instinctively exactly how much pressure to put on a pig.
The BAD 1) There is very little consistency within the breed. 2) There are no true lines. What anyone calls a line is really just based on who bred the dog, not an actual family line of dog. 3) The average Lacy dog is just that, average... except their temper.
The UGLY 1) Temperament, on average, they are mean!
All that said, If you get your hands on a really great one, you won't find a better dog. The two best dogs I ever hunted behind were Lacy dogs. But that is two out of a hundred. Another 10 or so were really good dogs. The rest were pretty much just serviceable. Only two were not worth feeding.
Unfortunately, 6 or 7 years into the game, just when we were getting to the point where we had a line started, and were producing consistency, we slowed our breeding. Then my partners main bitch died. Then his main stud, who we were basing the line off of, died. My partner quit hunting, but I still had the goods. Shortly thereafter, my main gyp died. Then my main male got snakebit in the toe and died. Keep in mind that all of these dogs were not just related, but all first and second relation to one another. They were the start of a line. My Banjo dog was Grandson of Trapper, also nephew. His Dame was Trappers Daughter and Niece. Trapper and Banjo were the two BEST that I referenced above. Years of effort crumbled in a couple of months. I gave it one last half ass attempt breeding a bitch that I had left, and the pups were culled.
I decided to hang up my spurs and get a couple of tight bred curs from someone that I know and trust. My old partner got his house together and he is getting back into it now, 3 years later, and he is going with Lacy crosses. At the end of the day, all of the effort just wasn't worth starting over when there are several good consistent families of cur dog to choose from (if you know the right people).
I know that a couple of you have a Lacy dog or two that you love, and I would give anything to get those last 4 back, but that is my honest assessment, so let the flaming begin!

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Un-scientific, but fair DC50 test against DC30
|
on: August 05, 2013, 06:16:09 pm
|
Experimental perimeters: Compare DC50 range to DC30 range, by leaving each collar in the same position on the porch, while driving to and from work.
Constant: Measured on the same brand new and fully charged Astro320, with the provided 13" antenna.
Variables: The DC50 was on collar ID 0, while the DC30 was on collar ID 1.
Terrain: I live in the Pedernales River bottom, the terrain is predominantly limestone and cedar. My drive is very hilly, with high peaks and low gulleys, though overall I am ascending from the river bottom.
Results heading to work: DC30 Lost communication for the first time at 1.12mi, consistently intermittent until 2.25mi, lost signal for good at 2.25mi. DC50 Lost communication for the first time at 2.25mi, consistently intermittent until 2.75mi, lost signal for good at 3.2mi.
Results heading home from work: DC50 picked up for the first time at 3.4mi, intermittent until 2.25mi, never lost signal again inside of 2.25mi. DC30 picked up for the first time at 2.75mi, intermittent until 1.12mi, never lost signal again after 1.12mi.
Objective notes: The DC50, when intermittent, was far more "active". Even though it would loose signal, it seemed to pick back up much faster and more reliably. The 30 just quit instead of getting gradually more intermittent. The 50 seemed to struggle a little more to eek out that last half mile.
I look forward to testing it with my 60" vehicle mounted whip (cant drive the buggy to work), and testing the bark indicator. I have not figured out a test for that besides woods time.

Road tested my dc 50 and dc 40 today I set them both up next to each other.I was able to get 1.9 out of my 40 and 2.43 before the 50 lost it. That is at least what I was able to get around my area (hill country). I did not have long range antennas on. I did all the up grades on my system this morning. Hope this helps y'all

I am really glad to hear that. Brad S, A friend of mine was a HAM operator and radio tower owner who enjoyed running dogs with me. I really don't know what he did, but after a couple of hunts loosing dogs at less than .75mi and having to switch to the quick track, he made an antenna and gave it to me as a gift.

Updated my 320 before we left yesterday.. I would say the bark indicator is cool but if its dropping off before the 40 then whats the point.. Just glad I didn't sell all my 40's.
I'm glad that I kept a couple of DC30s too! With standard DC30 antennas, and a 60" tuned whip on my 220 hand held, mounted on top of my buggy, 2.5mi is easy. I have seen 4mi out of it consistently in rugged terrain and hunting conditions. I could even pick up a collar at the house intermittently, from my work parking lot at 17mi... Sounds impossible, but really. Go figure that I just got comfortable enough with GPS to sell the last of my radio collars...

I sure hope this comparison is disproved. In my experience, which was short, the DC40 sucked compared to the DC30. If my new DC50 is worse than the DC40, I am going to be really disappointed. I should be able to provide my own test results sometime next week, and real time woods experience the week after. Here is to hoping...

The bottom kind of spider webs over a lot of the country over there so if i am hooding the area I feel like the scent wont come out of the bottom very well. Do you guys disagree? Do you think the scent will come out of those deep creek bottoms and carry?
In the mornings, as temps are rising, thermoclines will pull the scent out of the bottom (warming air rises). In the evening, as the weather cools, thermoclines will push scent down into the bottom (cool air falls). Granted, wind can offset or counteract thermoclines at any time... How big of a property is "bigger"? Bigger is a pretty subjective description. Steve

Assumsing you have the dog wormed out, this recipe usually packs on weight..
Satin Balls 10 lbs cheap hamburger (high fat %) 1 large box uncooked oatmeal (I generally use about 3/4 of the box) 12 raw eggs 1 15oz jar wheat germ 10 packages Knox unflavored gelatin 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup salmon oil 1 and 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses 4 cups cooked brown rice
I roll these into about baseball size patties and freeze.
Just mix all ingredients together? No cooking anything but rice? from me.....who else. tapatalk I made these this weekend, for a bitch who whelped on Saturday. She hadn't been eating very well (or at all), and we all know she needs the nourishment, so I figured it was worth a try. Now she runs out of the whelping box, grabs the ball, and runs back in to her pups to scarf it down. She still has not touched her dry food since Thursday, I'd say she likes it... Anyway, I just cooked the rice, then mixed it all together, balled it up between baseball and softball size, and stuck it on a baking tin to freeze. I also left the egg shells in it, and used cod liver oil instead of Salmon oil because that's what I could get and it was rated higher in every reported nutrient. Making it was not cheap, but I can certainly see how it would work. Good luck. Steve

YUMmmmmmI I made about 50LB of wild hog Boudin last Saturday. I have probably eaten 6 to 8 pounds of it already, and just heated up two more 11" links for dinner.
I had planned to make a batch of Hot Italian sausage next Saturday, But now you have me hungry for wild hog Sauce Piquant and Head Cheese...
