HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Running Pen

I think that is the main point ,fence breaking them before putting them in a big area . Wild hogs know no boundaries and have to be taught what a fence is . HUNT ' UM UP !!!

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Bay pen size
on: March 08, 2015, 08:09:59 pm
I like a round pen . A 80 ft . seams to work well , plenty of room and no corners for a hog to corner a dog in . To put one up is easy , Put a stake in the center and cut a rope the diameter you want ,put a stick in the end of the rope and scribe the ground for the post and put up your fence. It takes aprox. the times the circumfince in panels to cover it . I put post every two to three feet. HUNT 'UM UP!!!

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: What makes a strike dog?
on: February 22, 2015, 09:52:40 pm
To me a strike dog should hit the ground looking for hogs and be able to wind or track a hog and hold a bay till help arrives . I like a medium range dog 6 hundred yards max. then check in . I am fortunate at this time to have two ybm jips that fit this description . Having to do with out them wright now ,due to pups , Will be back on the hogs soon .

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: whats your preference male or female
on: February 20, 2015, 09:41:46 pm
A while back I took two of my dogs for a run , on the way back I saw a fellow hunter on a place near the road I called him and he told me they had a big hog bayed and all his dogs were wore out. Took my two JIPPS to the bay and they made me proud. Not to take any thing away from his dogs , they were wore out and hot . When the hog shook the other dogs including the bull dog , they each grabbed an ear and took him to the bank of the pond . BITCH POWER !!! HUNT'UM UP !!!! [ Fresh dogs ]

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: anybody keep chickens ?
on: February 06, 2015, 09:04:17 pm
I keep about thirty hens and hatch out chicks about twice a year to replace older hens . I have developed my own breed , I crossed production reds with a half game roster and for some reason wound up good laying hens that weigh around ten pounds. Now I am crossing this with a Cornish x New Hampshire red rooster , that I breed an raised. I have twelve pullets out of this cross that look real good . Will see in the spring !!

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / old hogs
on: January 30, 2015, 10:06:12 pm

I was reading a article from TPWL about hogs , they stated hogs only lived six to eight years. I have trapped and caught hogs that I think had to be well over ten years old. How old of a hog do you think you have caught or seen ?

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Leash training ?
on: January 30, 2015, 09:42:44 pm

I have shoulder problems so I can't stand a dog jerking on my arm. I use a 1/4" nylon rope about six ft. long with a Honda tied in the end like a roping rope put this around there neck just behind the ears and when they try to pull you give the rope a jerk . This is a sensitive area and they will respond to your demands quickly. Each dog is different but with daily training sessions they soon learn not to pull . HUNT"um UP !!

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Need info on Pit heeler crosses

on: December 26, 2014, 08:35:33 pm

Had two heelers when I started hunting hogs back in the eighties . They where hell on a hog , would set one down and dare it to try to run. I used a twenty two rifle and just waked in and shot them. Killed a lot of hogs with those dogs !!! One of the biggest hog hunters in south Texas used pit heeler crosses !!
