HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Hook worms

That's how I felt Reuben. I noticed all the symptoms when it was to late. My kids jack rat dog had just died and I found this pup a hour from the house and was excited about it. Over looked all the things I should have looked for nor did I know how serious hook worms are. So I blame myself some. Like I said Chaulked it up as a learning experience. Guy said If I would of brought the dog to the vet it would be fine now and i felt different nor do I feel you should spend $200 on a pup that's suppose to be wormed and vac and have to take it to the vet the day after you purchase it. Sorry for the rant.

It is to late. Kind of a crappy deal. Purchased a 10 week old pup from a guy who called me the next day saying the pups had hookworms that one of his started acting really sick. And I needed to get it to the vet. He had been worming with Nemex since 2 weeks but only giving one round each time. I had never dealt with hooks and never realized the severity of hooks. I have had wormy pups in the past that were fine after a good worming. Instead of paying a emergency visit to the vet for some wormer I gave the dog some generic drontal plus which I keep on hand and use on numerous dogs. Next morning pup was so weak it could'nt walk and died shortly after. Needless to say Im out of a pup and my money because The seller says I didnt bring the pup to the vet like I was told too. And I needed "that good wormer from the vet because the stuff you get on the internet dont work like its suposta".
That led me to the question on how fast these worms can kill. I felt that if that pup was that bad off over night no wormer would of did it any good. I have chaulked it up as a learning experince on who I buy pups from and also a education on wormers and parisites. Whats your opinions?

Has anyone lost a puppy to hook worms before? If a pup is anemic and too weak to walk do you think worming it then or even a day before would save it?

THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / Looking for a rough female dog

Looking for a female to cross with some border collie cowdogs. Pretty much a rcd. Something rough that will bite or catch on the head. Needs to be silent. Doesn't have to have any hunt just a high driven dog that wants to get ahold of stock and stop it. No straight bulldog but will consider crosses. Give me a call or text if you have something that may fit. jacobfluitt@bellsouth.net 337-230-7707 Louisiana

I use border collies. Run around 85 mommas and 50 yearlings. Do all penning with two dogs. You can do a lot with one dog, but two dogs make things go a lot smoother. To be successful get cattle to respect dogs and always set up to win.
I have pretty good handle on my dogs and use them many different ways. Gather and pen. Work in pens. Fetch cattle off grass. Even use them to hold up an turn back in pasture sorting off pairs. I use them to block gate while feeding and haying.
There are many tough dogs out there with more bite then you would ever need. Ill take a dog that want a head over a heel dog. But one that will hit both ends is nice. One that will only heel is worthless to me. I've seen some that will catch that Didnt have any bulldog in them.
Ill try to post a few videos

Gueydan. Live up against a bayou so that's where my water is comming from. Has not gone up since last night so I'm hoping that's as high as it gets. Had some good rye grass that's been under water since Thursday and also about 60 bales that are in a foot of water.

I really like to work cattle with both. I just got two cur pups. Thing I like about my collies is I can use them in so many ways. I work them horseback, atv, foot, and have even penned cattle from drivers seat of my truck. I can send them ahead of cattle put them behind cattle or on the side of cattle, wherever they are needed. They will bunch and hold cattle also. On the downside they are totally silent so they aren't much good in brush. Also have no hunt the them. I'm gonna post a few pics in a new topic if anyone is interested.

I use collies. I have had some crosses at one time that were so so dogs. Cur dogs are bred to bark so to me trying to take it out of one would be the same as trying to make a border collie bark when working. Just goes against what they were bred for. Check out daltons cowdogs. He breeding some crosses that seem to be silent. There are a lot of really rough and tough collies out there. I've been around a few that will actually catch.
