2  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Dog from pound into catch dog or just hog dog on: January 29, 2016, 11:50:30 am
Me and my hunting buddies get pits from the pound to catch with and luckily we've had more good dogs than bad. I would be hesitant to try to get a strike dog from the pound. A quality strike dog is tougher to come by and I would rather not mess with a dog that may not have any hunt in him to begin with. I'm willing to bet a lot of pits end up at the pound due to having some level of dog aggression or are tough to keep contained. That's why it's so important to have a proper kennel set up so you can keep dogs safely separated that don't get along. My #1 advice would be to not just get the first dog you see. Take your time and look hard for the physical qualities you want. There are plenty of pits to choose from. Don't end up in a position with a decent dog that doesn't catch as well as you would like because he needs an extra inch of leg under him, etc. rather than finding the dog that has the physical qualities that can make him great.
3  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dog pooping in food bowl? on: November 12, 2015, 04:23:10 pm
Never had to deal with such a thing myself, but I would be seeing red too. The first thing I would do if possible is to change the location of the bowl. I'm curious if he's actually targeting the bowl or whether he just likes to poop in that spot. If he's going for the bowl, the next thing I would do is find a way to raise it off the ground. Maybe make a wooden box that will keep it high enough he can't poop in it but can still eat out of it.
4  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Metalized Hog Skull on: August 14, 2015, 03:55:47 pm
Sent this skull to a guy in Montana to be "metalized". I think it's just a special type of paint. Had it done in bronze with nickel teeth. It's supposed to patina like real bronze would. Anyhow, I thought it came out pretty good and thought I would share.
5  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: This time of the year? on: August 13, 2015, 01:57:45 pm
Are you leading the dogs in from downwind? When I'm hunting hogs that are hitting feeders I always try to put the dogs where they can wind the hogs instead of trying to cut a track. They seem to get on the hogs quicker and shut them down quicker in my experience. Just a thought.
6  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Rhodesian Ridgeback on: July 01, 2015, 03:12:16 pm
I have a catahoula ridgeback cross. He's been a very good hunting dog for me, but he's much bigger than I like my strike dogs. He's the big dog in my avatar that looks like a BMC. His sire was a catch dog and he would absolutely man-handle a hog, but wouldn't hit one like a pit does. He would look for his moment to grab the hog by the back of the neck. That being said, I personally wouldn't own another ridgeback or cross for how I like to hunt. I don't see the advantage over a good cur or hard hitting catch dog. However, as far as pets go, they are tough to beat. Great personality and are great with kids/family. You can get one as a pet, and you can hunt him too, I just wouldn't expect him to turn into something great.
7  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Sucking chest wound on: June 18, 2015, 02:18:55 pm
I can see you've got everything under control, but I can't urge people enough, who are new to this sport, to learn how to handle things like this in the field. If you hunt enough, you will save a dog's life by knowing these skills. I keep 1 gallon zip-lock bags and petroleum jelly in my med kit for this scenario. I cut the bag open so it is just a single piece of plastic and put petroleum around the wound because it helps create a seal, especially if you have a dog with a thick coat. I was taught to compress the chest while someone blows air in the dogs nose to inflate the lungs. This will help get as much air out of the chest cavity as possible and once the wound is sealed make it easier for the lungs to inflate. Then I wrap the whole thing up with vet wrap to keep it in place. Maybe we need to start a thread about field trauma skills everyone should learn.
8  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Straight hind legs on: June 18, 2015, 02:08:48 pm
This is interesting...I've never had to deal with this myself. Does she sit or lay funny? Or use both hind legs at the same time when running?
9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Knife? on: June 08, 2015, 02:01:35 pm
Both will get the job done, but my preference is for a drop point over a clip point, so I would go with the second one

That's a common snapping turtle, not an alligator snapping turtle
11  GENERAL CATEGORY / HUNTING AND FISHING / Galveston Fishing Trip on: April 13, 2015, 09:07:32 am
Never made it offshore due to the weather this past weekend, but we did well on the jetties. Caught limits of sheepshead and a couple reds over 40". Thanks to 3G Fishing Charters and chasinbacon for recommending them.

12  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Couple decent pigs from the lease on: March 23, 2015, 11:57:44 am
Caught the first one on a solo hunt. It was probably less than 2 minutes between the dogs striking, shutting him down, and me putting my pit on his ear. Happened so fast that he had a ton of fight in him when I laid my hands on him. The second pig was with a group of guys I took hunting Friday night. We have a feeder on the lease about 1000 yds from the trailer we stay in that has a motion light on it that you can see from the porch. We pulled in right at 10PM and the light was on so we geared the dogs up and hit it. About 600 yds later they had this guy bayed up. Let my pit go at 60 yds and heard a massive collision. The plan was to let one of the guys I was hunting with leg the first hog, but when he saw him he decided it would be best to let me handle it. No monsters or great cutters, but both boars were right at 200 lbs and great work for the dogs, especially my young pups I'm working.

13  GENERAL CATEGORY / HUNTING AND FISHING / Re: Galveston Fishing Guide Needed on: February 11, 2015, 11:46:02 am
Thanks for the help. Got a number or website? I tried finding them on-line, but all I can find is a bunch of guides that dock at Pier 19.
14  GENERAL CATEGORY / HUNTING AND FISHING / Galveston Fishing Guide Needed on: February 10, 2015, 10:34:32 am
I've got a group of guys going to Galveston in April and we're looking to do a blue water fishing trip (80-100 miles out) Friday and then get up and do an inshore trip Saturday. Been searching on the internet and found plenty of guides, but I was hoping someone on here might give us a recommendation or two on who to contact. Any help would be appreciated.
15  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Catch dogs teeth on: January 06, 2015, 08:50:51 am
My pit is missing two and the other two are broken off and he has caught several 200+ lb pigs solo. I don't think it makes a difference.
16  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Question on Garmin DC50. on: December 03, 2014, 03:54:02 pm
I can't find the DC50's in the DFW area anymore. I had to buy the T5's. A friend south of Austin bought 5 DC50's on sale for $180 each at Cabela's, so I'm thinking they are discontinued.
17  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: FOR THOSE THAT TRAP... ( WHAT BAIT ?? ) on: December 02, 2014, 10:34:27 am
I just put corn in a 5 gallon bucket, add a packet of strawberry jello, and cover with water. I let it sit for a week before using it.
18  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Dogs Losing Weight on: November 20, 2014, 04:18:08 pm
I've used Red Cell as a supplement when dogs are healing up and I believe it speeds up the process. Usually, when I have dogs dropping weight for seemingly no reason it's tapeworms. Check their stool for what looks like pieces of white rice. If they are present, then you need to get a wormer that contains praziquantel. If they are just thin due to working more than usual then I usually give them raw eggs and meaty bones in addition to their normal feed.
19  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Cut Kit on: October 10, 2014, 03:05:19 pm
Along with most of the stuff on that list I also keep a copy of this book in my med kit:
Field Guide: Dog First Aid Emergency Care for the Hunting, Working, and Outdoor Dog
Just as important, if not more, than what is in your kit is knowing how to respond to the different scenarios you may run into. I had to resort to a tourniquet about 5 weeks ago when nothing else was working and then had to deal with shock setting in. Had I not known the steps to take, I would have lost my catch dog.
20  HOG & DOGS / DOGS ON HOGS / Nice Solo Hunt on: October 07, 2014, 10:36:04 am
Maybe I'm just becoming more jaded towards people as I get older, but I'm really finding more and more enjoyment out of my solo hunts lately. Went out to my lease alone this weekend to do a little hunting. Shot a nice mess of dove and then caught this boar Sat night. It seems that the 175-225 lb boars with straight daggers tear my dogs up the worst so I was surprised to find the dogs didn't have a scratch after catching this guy. He broke the bay twice and covered about 1.5 miles before they finally got him shut down for good. After I got him down it looked like he lost an eye at some point (maybe poked by a stick?). Walked my pit all the way in to about 20 yds before letting him loose. He hit him on the same side as that bad eye and a few seconds later I had him on the ground.
