HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Astro 320 backlight engaging for now reason?
|
on: July 07, 2013, 04:44:29 pm

I have my astro 320 with all alerts off and silent. I notice even from the home screen it will occasionally just light up on it's own. Seems to be when the dogs stop like it is alerting me. No message/alert appears just the screen wakes up. I was wondering if anyone had this similar problem and knows a fix or they just do it. All my friends have the 220 there's do not do this.
It is annoying and eating up my batteries when the unit is on but not in use.

Lots of people sell them. I personally can't deal with most people so I don't go that route. I only keep what I need the rest get cut loose.

I just vaccinate my dogs for rabies myself costs me 18.00 for 10 doses. 1ml/dog
A lot less headache and worry that way if they get into a coon or something.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Remote collar for young dog that won't come
|
on: March 18, 2013, 06:14:48 pm
|
I have a young dog I raised myself who for some reason now that it's older loves to run from me and refuses to come.
Is it okay to bump a dog like this when it tries to evade you to the point you have to corner it and snatch it by the collar?
All my other dogs will come right up for petting etc and this lil number 2 stays back 10 feet and just watches like it is some wild stray.
I don't have an E collar yet but was thinking of getting one to help with this dog, then later for trash breaking. Any advice?

Why are you surprised that your 'hound' is open? That is what most hounds do. In real thick areas sometimes it is helpful to have an open dog burn up the thick woods and get the hogs moving or push them to a crossing where the catch dog is waiting. I personally don't hunt open but have had situations where an open dog would be useful.

I wanted to add while the dog was eating i would put my hand towards the bad eye and the dog wouldn't react. Did the same towards the good eye and the dog would flinch or look up. That's how i knew for sure one eye was bad.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Dogs not catching the ear
|

I have a dog who will stop a pig by grabbing the tail, leg, whatever. Once the hog is stopped or caught he goes in and grabs the ass or under the front leg and just holds. He is a gritty BD not a CD. Does anyone else have a dog like this? Anyone get one to stop and go for the ear. I was thinking of getting him off then placing him on the ear but not sure if that's worth the trouble assuming he will just grab whatever on the next hog.

I would assume boars are easier to trail and smell from a distance due to their scent. Also there sometimes more likely to stop and stand their ground and maybe the dogs learn this and assume their race will be shorter if they trail a boar.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / using a remote trainer for caught hog?
|
on: January 05, 2013, 08:52:52 pm
|
Has anyone used a remote training collar with shock correction to teach caught hog? I was thinking of using this on the stubborn dogs as opposed to constantly kicking at them while dragging the hog towards the truck. (I have some young dogs that like to rush in for a quick grab constantly before I knock em off) I at the same time though don't want to scare them off the hogs. Any input appreciated.

I catch a lot of Barrs in FL as well. I don't know who is barring them but I would love to meet them and thank them. Have some great meat and trophies. I have since barred some myself to return the favor to whoever else is out there.
If I catch a real nasty boar with good teeth and size I recommend not barring such an animal but letting it go to pass it genes on. Assuming of course you are permitted to do such a thing.
