thanks . I sure enjoy looking at all the old pics. I sure was glad I had a couple to post. Some how we made the pictures a little too big. You have to arrow it to the left to see the 4th dog. The two spotted dogs were what we called leopards. My dad told me that he got them from his dad. They came off one of the prisons and were out of cowdog stock. I dont know anything about them other than dad said a hog bit the tail off the one on the right. The 2nd dog was called Ring he didnt know his background but said he was a good dog. The 3rd dog was called Rusty . He had some redbone in him. His momma was called Bonnie. She was a cat and fox dog. My uncle told me that one time they were after a cow in the bottoms and they put BONNIE on her track and she found the old cow and bayed herup.
There is a book Big Thicket Legacy it was published about 1977. The entire book is interviews with old timers that settled in the Big Thicket of east Texas in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some of the language wouldn't be politically correct today but it is in their own words. Several of them talk about using their cur dogs for hogs , cattle, bear and panthers. These people didn't just go hunting 3 or 4 times a month. They used their dogs every day. I think that is the key. Knowing your dogs and them knowing you. JMO
I got him from John Gay of New Boston Texas. John called him Smutty. Johns Doc dog was his daddy and his mother was a Benny Cowart gyp named Charlene. Doc was from Ben Jordan's Henry dog and John's Sugar Baby. Charlene was from Charles Long's Bubba dog and Long's Dolly. Bubba was from Ashcraft's Bigfoot and Ashcraft's Pearl. Dolly was from Long's Jack and Harrison's Kate. The Henry dog was from Ricky Driver's dogs . I'm not sure where the Driver dogs came from. C L if you're reading this feel free to correct me if I got any of this wrong. Most if not all of these dogs were cow dogs. But I'm sure many good hog dogs can be traced back to many of them. The Smutty dog made a good hog dog. He would go huntin when you turned him loose. And when he barked he was lookin at the hog. He wasn't yhe best in the world but he wasn't for sale. He was killed when he was 4 years old. I'm still lookin for one like him.
I agree. 3 mo is awful young to expect very much from. some pups will start barking at a hog that young but they arent quick enough to dodge a hog. even a small hog can knock them around pretty good when they are 3 months old. thats the last thing you want at that age. give him 3 or 4 months. try again. if the hog is too rough you can tie him outside the pen where he can see and hear the action. some times if you make the pig squeal it will get him excited and he will want to join in. just my opinion
I sold 2 yellow pups to Juan Ruiz several years ago. He was from Three Rivers I believe. They may be related. Might be worth a shot to try Three Rivers information.
