if i didnt have many hogs to hunt i would look at getting me a hound and it would proabably be a plott, because if i did find where some had been i would want to have a cold nose dog to be able to run it and most currs in my experience aint gonna take a 8 hr old track, good luck
X2 except maybe the plott.. lol.. you are actually in a good situation... you have hogs that arent use to being followed by dogs... in that situation i would go wit hounds(i like redbones) but do your homework and whatever hound you go with try to find one out of working bloodlines... then if at all possible when they are of age get them with a dog that knows what they are doing... from there you just have to catch some pigs... good luck and tear'em up

I've been amazed with some of the tuskers my bulldog has caught and when i went to check him over he aint touched... i wont buy anything else now.... p.s. i am ashamed to admit it but i turned my dogs loose in an area where i've had a big boar beat me several times... anyway they bayed up and i couldnt here a pig squealing so i figured they had gotten that big boar bayed up... i get about 50 yards and let ole vaya go and he runs in there and i here a hell of a fight, problem is it isn't squealing... my dogs haven't trashed in the longest time so the last time i expect to see is vaya and a big ole coon goin at it.... funniest thing(and believe me i wan't laughing at all at the time) was that bulldog would throw his body into that coon using his vest to help him and then he'd latch onto thats coons head... so long story short there also coon proof mike

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / summer time hunting?
|
on: April 28, 2011, 03:24:35 pm

With summer coming I was just wondering how you guys hunt or if you hunt in the summer? Last couple summers my hog doggin has become pretty scarce to not at all but with a new job coming and working for a guy who has taught me alot about hog hunting i think thats about to change.

thats a thousand dollar question if you ask me.... just depends on the particular hound you cross with the particular cur... if your cur is quiet and you find a good semi open hound then i would breed.... every hound has lines in them that are more open than others and every line has more dogs that are louder than others...JMO

what i would give to see that... i am scared every time i drive up to a dirt tank its either going to be gone or i have a cow bogged down.... p.s. when you have to drag a cow out it gets real fun gettin the rope off her neck

put the cur on a pig or two with or without the other dog... if she decides messing with other dogs is more important that finding pigs then i would cull... just remember what shes doing is probably ruining your other dog and maybe dogs in the future..JMO

its in the dog if you ask me.. either hes going to be loud or not... i use a very open hound to train my cur dogs and they wont bark a lick... you either learn to hunt with a loud dog or not... i wouldn't waste time trying to break him of it if i were you..JMO

I agree with coach in that if they are had a heat stroke(or overheating) then its too late.... i dont know where the i.v. comes from... heck when i played ball we would have guys on the team come get a heat stroke and i never once saw an I.V. .... your best bet is to have your dogs ready for the heat when it comes time to hunt..JMO

no its not too late if you ask me... i would try to find a buddys dog or someones dog that maybe knows what they are doing and throw them in the pen with a pig and see how it goes.... just see what happens and try to go from there... hope it works out for you

Here's the best two on my yard now, Tweety and her grandson Hunter. With Tweety being down most of this past year with pups, a blown ankle and now recovering from ankle surgery... Hunter has filled the #1 spot nicely. mike... those are great looking dogs.... was just wondering what they were bred like -mike
