I back it up to a hill or throw some sturdy (wont wiggle) boxes half the size under the tailgate to make a step type deal. Put him on leash and get in the back of the truck with his food bowl at suppertime and call him up to you. If he makes it feed em half and do it again. Try to make it as easy as possible once they do it once or twice on their own make it a little harder. Just don’t get mad at him but if he isn’t trying pack em him up with no kibble and try again tomorrow.
I have a 13 pound three legged jagd terrier that loads herself in the back of the truck… there is no excuse.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Grow out of soft pads?

I’ve had a finished dog that I was willing to apply all that pad treatment to on a daily basis because she the best I had (she’s a retired house pet now). But I still couldn’t hunt her every go and if I missed a few days it showed. I’ve never scene any treatments ever “fix” anything they only helped and just barely… lol I have a buddy that runs walker dogs and he swears he has more luck putting duct type on pads than any mineral ointment.
Halfbreed - will they toughen up enough to not have to use that stuff everyday? It’s an unproven gyp I would just assume find her a short-range hunting kennel or pet home ratter than deal with that for years again.

Part of them but some all black toes are rubbing off as well.
I know what I would say if someone asked me this question... I’m kinda in denial here… She lives on cement and 5 other pups 3 months younger aren’t missing a bit after being on the same hunt the same hunt today.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Grow out of soft pads?
|

I have a Walker X BMC gyp that is showing some promise but she runs her pads off every time we go out. She is almost a year now and I have been hoping she would grow out of it by spending more time in the woods.
Has anyone had pads harden up after a year?
I can’t own a dog with soft feet... I hunt from horseback and routinely cover 10-15 miles on a hunt. I have 5 other pups that are showing well so I’m not really hurting for pups but she is dripping with energy and trying hard so I want to give her every opportunity.

Clip em off with fingernail clippers at 2 days and dab em with a little power. Got a dog from a buddy and his hind claws grew so much they circled back and dug into themselves. Had two separate dogs break a front dewclaw at the joint some how in the woods. After they would just dangle there like an ear lobe… never showed pain when I was looking at them BUT don’t imagine it felt good wrestling through briars with a floppy finger. Had to cut them off just bothered me and now they all get done every time.
Its almost no work to get em off and it removes the chance for any issues later.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Breaking scent ?

Ruben - Great idea! I have a dog that is really developing an issue and your system here will work great. I'll soak a rag in Deer scent and sneak up near his kennel (I have a dividing wall so he wont see me) and lay it just around the corner I'm sure he will start sniffing just out of curiosity and then I'll make my deer mount peak around and BUZZZZZZZZ. When I place the scent rag down and he dives in his house I'll know we have learned something. Poor guy might have nightmares about the electric wood goat coming to get him.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dogs sprayed by skunk

Natures Miracle Skunk Remover! I SWEAR by it and you can get it at the big corporate pet stores like Petco, Pet Smart, etc. I had a ruff coat terrier skunked bad right before a 16hr road trip and you couldn’t smell her in the cab during the ride. Skunk stink comes out of the skin over time so it comes back a little bit after a few days but will “remove” (not cover) the stink 90% for a few days and cut the odor to 75% for the remaining time.
Put gloves on first! I used one quart to one 20 pound dog (buddy recommended) so I guess two or three quarts on a cur. Soak him in it and rub it in good it is binding to the oil. Then let him dry… do not let him shake off the extra I tied his neck up tight to a low limb so he couldn’t lick of lay down till its dry. Once he is dry wash off the Natures Miracle Skunk Remover with Dawn soap (pick a scent if you like) and don’t skimp this is washing off the broken down oil and rinse VERY well.
If you stuff your nose in the fur you can smell it but at arms reach I wouldn’t have even known it had happened.
Above treatment does absolutely nothing for skunked cut gear.

Ma (Big Girl) would consistently make 600-yard loops with the dark hulla (Black) and she hammered down hard at the bay the 7 or 8 hunts I had her... She hunted more around 300-400 yards without her buddy but liked to stay out of sight.
Dad (Dusty) solid strike dog.

Both parents were owned by Tomball Dogos on here. Dad - Dusty and Ma - Big Girl. I have pictures of ma I got to hunt her for a while (BMC in center both pics). Sadly she caught a tusk just in front of the collar and passed a few days ago. I’m sure Tomball has a pic of dusty somewhere… Thanks for the kind words. All dark marks on coats came from them wrestling when their number dye was still wet. Plan on posting a more recent vid of them in the video section but photobucket isn’t responding right now.

I'm going to keep 4 out of the 9. Going to pick a male out for the breeder (Tomball Dogos) and in the next 6 months I plan on cutting 4 more out. Honestly all of them are self starters I'm having to pick based off of independence during turn out, ability to take a correction, and kennel fighting all of them show the same level of interest in a shoat. Wish I had the property to hunt more or id keep em all.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Swamp Dog Catch Vest?

Yea I'm not shooting it down yet either. It feels like it could take some punishment and ANY vest can get cut through with time… just seems too good to be true.
Does your super suit have any extra in the chest? My bikini vest feels like it has some extra in the collar but from there down it uniform thickness. I think the vest is made up of two layers of one material and one layer of extra thick correctional kevlar. Don’t quote me on that… might be three layers of correctional kevlar.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Swamp Dog Catch Vest?
|
on: April 18, 2013, 04:45:46 pm
|
My catch dog or dogs have to be able to walk beside the horse the whole hunt and generally take off at first strike so I have always run real light weight vests. I have been using the Ugly dog bikini vest and it works well enough as long as the hog his one of the plates but there are big areas the connect the chest and side plates that are not protective at all. So I have a bigger RCD now and decided to give Swamp Dog cut gear a shot at it and their bikini vest, which got here today. Looks great and fits about as well as an Ugly dog vest but seems REAL thin.
I’m not shooting it down yet as if I wanted a bulky leash in catch vest I would have gotten one of them Hardcore, PnP, Titan etc type vest that had more armor than my ballistic vest back in the Army. Them things would kill my dog in the Louisiana Swamp/ Rivers way faster than any hog.
I have searched the forum and can’t find much reviews on them. Has anyone run one for a season? Seems like it would do glancing blows great and my current RCD wouldn’t even know he was wearing it but feel like there might be some issues with a direct blow to the chest. Feels like a bay vest…
